you only need to type the first part of your username.

I'd venture to say it's and ID 10t error for sure. Better check your PEBKAC connection as well. That should clear it up.

Gmail rocks my socks. Especially with IMAP.

Gmail rocks my socks. Especially with IMAP.OMG, my socks have become rocked too... it does IMAP now? [that's not sarcasm]

But why does it send so much good mail to Spam? Like when I ordered something from Amazon yesterday. Both emails from Amazon went to Spam. That's happened a few times before with more obscure e-commerce sites, plus quite a few newsletters from various web sites. I no longer trust Gmail. They are getting too aggressive in their spam filtering. How much other good email have I never seen (only to be silently deleted 30 days after its arrival)?

I get 1200 spams every day. That's 36000 per month. I get all the spam sent to anything @ newyorkunicycle.com or photo57.com. Plus I suspect that my main email address was given to some game sites once (not by me). And I have a very old email address that forwards to my main address. My email address can easily be harvested from the WHOIS database. So... close to half a million spams per year.

Since I don't trust spam filtering (false positives) and since I get way too much spam to handle by manually looking at every email (easily a half-hour per day), my only option is to change email addresses, go back to hosting my own email, and not use spam filters. This should buy me a few years if I don't expose my email address (such as on web sites and the WHOIS database).

Any other suggestions?

Yup. Gmail has IMAP access. Getting Started With IMAP (http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=75725)

I have not had any problems with Gmail's spam filtering. But my Gmail account also doesn't get any spam.

One way to manage things is to use two Gmail addresses. One that is used only for trusted contacts and a second that is used for untrusted contacts, web page signups, and such. The second account will get spammed but the first account should stay mostly spam free.

The second account will get spammed but the first account should stay mostly spam free. Thanks, that's a great idea. I'll do that. But the spammed account will still be the account that gets the confirmation email after ordering something from Amazon (for example). And those emails might get flagged as spam. I've ordered shareware and had license keys mailed to me that have gone to Spam. After a few days, I realized maybe it got caught in the spam filter, so (without really thinking) I started looking through my spam. I got through about 100 spams before realizing that those spam emails were just sent in the last hour. I needed to go back days (so obviously I needed to search -- but what about the emails that I'm not expecting? -- I can't search for something I don't know about).

The real answer is not to let yourself get spammed in the first place. Otherwise you will require the use of a spam filter and then you are exposed to losing good email.

I hate it and I'm sick of it. Just like my driving problem. Why are there so many people screwing up the world? Leave me alone!

i have the amish curse with technologyYour cursing doesn't *sound* Amish... :)

Really, get over yourself. It's free software. Don't like it? Try something that costs a bit more maybe. I have a shared hosting account at a web hosting company. All the email addresses I want, and I can pretty much set them up any way I want (not sure about IMAP though). I pay for this. So if it doesn't work I actually have a good reason to complain, and someone to complain to! Oh and it comes with a huge amount of storage space, a Web site with CPanel controls, and much more.
