View Full Version : New Server for Unicyclist.com!? - Lets Chip In!

So I just refreshed my page a min ago and there is a "New Server" in the top right corner of the page.
Im going to deposit some more money into my account and go donate as soon as I can.
I think most of you should do the same and donate a few dollars to help Gilby out, and we would benefit from it as well. And its always nice to give.
So get to it. Im ready to watch the percentage rise.

Excuses, excuses... :p
Im sure just walking around the house or asking parents for some spare change can add up to a dollar or more, and you can donate that.
Its going to take me a few days cause it takes a while to get money form my account onto my paypal account. But as soon as its there it will be going towards the server.

I think its fine. The link takes you to a paypal page with 'Contribution to New Server for Unicyclist.com by Gilby (donate@unicyclist.com)'.
You could just click on the old donate link and im sure the money would be going to the same place.
Im sure Gilby will mention it, but even if he doesnt, I trust this.

Yeah, it's most likey legit, but being a past vicitim of identity theft, I'll wait for the official announcement from Gilby.

There were two threads here, so I merged them and made it a sticky.
If you can afford to help out in buying this new server, please use the ChipIn link at the top of the site. Also, I've received word from some that they will send a check to me, so that brings us currently to 14% of the total. If anyone else whats to donate via money order, check, or cash, you can PM me to find out how to send it to me.

Okay, c'mon seniors who have jobs and know the value of Gilby's service from way back. It's time to step up, and you know how to do it.
Okay, c'mon all you kiddles who have stressed the server to an early death with all your inane chattering and empty posts. Beg, borrow, or steal from the units and help ensure you continue to have this internet streetcorner to loiter on.
Time to be a community. Let's get 'er done before the end of the weekend.
Allow me to bitch just briefly about the exchange rate:

(or am I stuck in the past?)I just watched The Time Machine four times in a now (once normal, then with both versions of the audio commentary, then normal again). Then I read the book just to see how the movie differed. I really paid attention and was able to build my own time machine. On my way back from hangin' with the Eloi in 802701, I stopped just a few minutes into the future to take a peek.

By the way, for a lark I looked at this site using a Firefox browser and I see 22 contributions totalling $701. So the freshness of the status ticker is browser-dependent. What's the significance of 768? Apparently it's the year that "Pepin the Short", king of the Franks, died.
And it's a common (or not so common any more) vertical screen resolution...
Rob
PS: the counter doesn't work for me either - seems to be stuck on the value from when I first saw it.
Actually, it seems to work fine in FireFox but not IE.
What's the significance of 768?
It's a bit of fun (read "whimsical nonsense" - to quote Ian Anderson) that started over in Ju (http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showpost.php?p=387333&postcount=233)st Conversation.

One problem could be that people outside the US may not have paypal accounts. Even people who are very active on ebay would prefer direct bank transfers, instead of using paypal. Only a small percentage (like me) use paypal.
You could possibly raise more money by having someone in the EU who collects the money for you from other European countries using his bank account (with IBAN etc) - such EU internal transfers are at no cost. This person should also have a paypal account in order to forward the money to you.
If you think of me as the middle-man: No I won't do it - I'm only contributing the idea.
Edit: And people under 18 may be restricted (while I think that they should not donate anyway. There are enough adults in this forum who can support the new server)

It is my understanding that one should NEVER use a debit card to conduct Internet transactions. I don't recall the details but debit cards, as opposed to credit cards, can not be used with confidence in the security of the information. Send Gilby cash in the mail rather than using a debit card online.

The problem with debit cards (as opposed to credit cards) is that if someone gets ahold of your card details and makes fraudulent purchases, it is extremely difficult to recover the money - usually impossible. Your entire bank account could get drained and you would have little or no recourse to recover the money.
Credit card companies, however, will not make you pay for much (by law the maximum is $50) if you report credit card fraud in a timely manner.

Any takers on Tom's generous offer? $75 is a lot for a 16 year old.
Just to be clear, I said I'd match anything up to a total of $75. If all the first 16-year-old-or-below can scrape together is $10, I'll match that.
And just to make it more interesting and show my heart and wallet are in the right place, I'll match 16-or-below donations until the total hits $75. Examples:
Kid A donates $75, I match
Kid Z donates $25, sorry the matching stopped at $75
or
Kid B donates $10, I match
Kid C donates $30, I match
Kid D donates $35, I match
Kid E donates $25, sorry the matching stopped at $75
Of course, that's all dependent on having any kids donate. I personally don't care if it comes from their personal debit card. If they drag Dad and his plastic into the room and he does it, that's fine.

This is a great bunch of folks!!
But when I do the math, I see that my donation was a little bit stingy in comparison with the average benefactor.
Please PLEASE I need lots and lots of people to make small donations so I won't look like a tightwad!!
If you can only give 10 or 5 or maybe even 2 bucks, it'll help pay for the server (and help out your buddy psbagumba)

So time for ROUND 2
Ding Ding
how many here can meet or beat their first contribution and chip in again.
PLUS all of you that seem to live on this site 24/7 (When do you find time to Uni) step up and CHIP-IN

I would love it if we could 100% buy Gilby a server. Wouldn't that be the coolest?
Someone else said this earlier, but I'll restate it... All you old-timers with well-established careers, come on! Dig deep! You can spare $100. I know you can. Ten of you can, for sure. And then we're almost done.
I was contributor #4 for $100.
Think of it this way. If you can afford a $100 contribution, then consider it that you are subsidizing the people who can't contribute that much. Life has been good to you, so spread it around! Gilby needs a new pair of shoes! I mean, a new server! Think of all the time he has put into this site for us. Please give him just two measly hours of your pay.

Even the younger people like myself can spare something. I make 6.50 an hour and work an average of 15 hours a week at a part time job, and I donated 50 bucks.

You and your TCUC... I think i saw you at Mondo... Maybe... Either i saw you helping people ride a 36'er, or i'm totaly wrong, and have no clue what i'm talking about.
I would donate.. but i dont have any money, i just bought like 5 cd's today lol..
I shall donate a wish of best luck, for now, i might donate like 10-20 in a day or so..

$100 = two hours of pay? I don't know ANYONE that makes that much money!I bet you do, but most good people who make that much usually don't like to let others know as it usually comes of as rude. Then again, sometime people like to max out their credit cards to compete against the "Jones" of the neighborhood and appear to make that amount.

i probably will, just not tonight.. its getting late. And correction on my amount of posts lol, currently 1361 with this.
I would've donated more, but I need all the money I can get right now, because I'm leaving on a big trip in four days. Otherwise I would've given at least 15 euros. Bad timing, Gilby.
But I'm happy, knowing that a) I've given two dollars - better than nothing, b) Uni57 is subsidizing me.
Thank you, Uni57, I appreciate it.

I really don't. My professional friends are all teachers, social workers, or work in the arts in some capacity. My husband and I bring in more money than they do, and it doesn't even begin to approach that dollar amount. My parents might make that much or at least close, but my father works two full-time jobs (while my mother works one full-time job) in order to do it.

Ah see, you neglected to mention that you were talking about household income, and not individual income. That's more reasonable, and I agree that it's not neccessarily "unusual," but still, I wish we made that much money.
I just gave additional $13 (= $23 total). Thought I should "own" ;) at least 1% of the server :)
So we are at $1100. Only $1000 more and we are there....
I think there should be more people who can afford $10 or $20......

Uni57 is subsidizing me.
Thank you, Uni57, I appreciate it.Ouch. I'm not sure whether you are being sarcastic. If you are not, then you should instead be thanking everyone who donated.
Matt's $50 contribution was probably more painful to him than my $100 contribution was to me. He's a better man than I am.
I regret using the word subsidize. It doesn't have quite the right flavor. What I was thinking of was how the Weston A. Price Foundation asks that if you can afford to donate a little extra, it helps to keep the cost of their conference low so that more people can afford to attend (they also give out free conference passes to four or five students every year). An extra donation helps others. If life has been good to you, spread it around a little.
I also regret posting how much I donated (I only did it to try to raise the bar -- otherwise I had no intention of saying anything at all). I'm certainly not the only one donating larger amounts.
So Ivan -- every donation is appreciated. Every donation helps. If many of us donated just a few dollars, we would meet the goal. Since we were only half-way there, I was trying to get some geezers to chip in. There has to be ten people here where a $100 donation won't bankrupt them. If you are in your 40s or 50s and a $100 donation means you can't pay the mortgage, I suggest you are doing something wrong! (unless something bad happened) But if more people like you donated, then I would have more money in my pocket right now.
All I should have ever said was that every donation helps. And that if $100 won't send you to the poorhouse, then send it!

Gilby, when the new server is installed, might we get a peek at it?

Thanks!

It might be like sponsoring a child in Africa. You get monthly pictures and updates about the children. Gilby should supply us with the same for sponsoring the server. We should get updates with photos and descriptions about how the server is doing. Then have to sit through late night TV commercials pleading for more money.

I was hoping for somesuch "show" given all the drama of watching the ChipIn bar grow!
To make it extra authentic, Gilby will need to be drinking some craft brew and eating filet mignon (purchased with our funds) while showing off his new server.

Frankly, I wouldn't care if instead of buying the server, he bought a bottle of Rémy Martin Louis XIII (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_XIII_de_R%C3%A9my_Martin).

That inflation must be killing me... I had to go for the 91/9 ground beef instead of the fillet mignon and some Carlsberg elephant.

A handy tip for MC'ing charity events is to charge them your usual rate.
If you agree to do it for nothing, you get treated like crap, people don't value your time and will mess you around from hell to breakfast.
Charge them, and they look after you.
If you so decide, you can then hand the cheque back at the end of the event.
This makes you look like the good guy and you didn't get messed around during the event.

My challenge grant is still out there...just like public radio. C'mon kids...if you haven't earned your own McDollars, put the pressure on M & P to come through for you. That's what "unconditional love" means...supporting your addictions when you can't support them yourself.
$1795 + $150 = $1945...and almost home free.

not wanting to continue the threadjack but thankyou for that information GILD. I will certainly remember that for next time, especially the bit about giving the money back, i feel guilty taking money for something i enjoy doing... They payed me in beers for this one, which is a currency widely accepted in these parts.
