Have you got a Zombie plan? are you prepared?
Heres my very lightly detailed Zombie plan.
Depending on the infection level and what kind of infection if its rage infected monkeys attacking people AKA Fast zombies or if there slow stumbling zombies and or if there are zombie dogs, i would most probably get as much food as possible and walk up to the top of my hill, ontop of the hill there is a large water tank possibly 40 metres up, it has a ladder up but is very secure with 2 paddlocks and a big steel enclosure around the bottom of the ladder. After getting the food to the top of the tank i would get my family, EX: Mum, dad, sister, brother, best friends and my unicycle and get them up top. I would then grab tents, any extra food i could find, batteries, laptop, and if possible go nick the neighbours generator. As for weapons there is nothing really, Few cricket bats etc a metal rod, I would also drive my yamaha TTR125L to the top of the hill as well and park it near the tank. Another thing i would grab a unbrella and a very heavy stand for it also weighing it down with sandbags. Being on a hill wind could grab it. If after all food supplys are gone and zombies flocked all around I would decide to end this wait and jump. Stay eating your family members or jump and die I VOTE DIE.
Thats my simple zombie plan. Whats yours? :p

I would take the advice of Dead Rising and grab a lawnmower.

i only read that far but i already found problems with your plan. there are no fast zombies. solanum (the zombie virus) only reanimates the brain so the zombies are only capable of slow uncordinated movement. also there are no zombies animals. solanum kills everything and only humans reanimate after dying. zombies also have no emotion so raged zombies are not possible. the are just a mindless drone that never stops and only has one thing in mind, to feed. and despite what people thing, zombies eat the flesh THEY DO NOT EAT BRAINS.

have you ever watched night of the living dead 4? (im pretty sure its that one), all the new ones, the zombies take huge bites out of peoples heads, ripping brain out.
Also, i agree with the whole virus thing, there are no zombie dogs, or fast zombies, only mutant dogs, and fast mutants (i am legend)

ALL ZOMBIE MOVIES HAVE BEEN HIGHLY INACCURATE. read the zombie survival guide by max brooks. that is the only accurate source for zombie information. hollywood jazzes up the zombies persona to make the movies more appealing to the mass audience. the i am legend "zombies" were not zombies, they were mutants.

This is really where it all started. The George Romero classic from 1968 still holds up well. I was amazed to find the FULL 1:35 min. movie on youtube! "There coming to get you Barbara!"

Guns, lots of guns. Two sawed-off pump-action shotguns, and some pistols for backup. Lots of ammo.
I don't think you can make any assertions about what the behavior of "real" zombies would be, since they aren't real. Zombies could be able to run, eat brains, flesh, have "rage," be semi-smart, completely stupid, or any combination of these. Just because some dude wrote a book doesn't make it gospel.
Personally, I like the 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later movies the best. I've watched just about all the zombie films out there, and own quite a few. I plan on buying some more when I can. Zombie movies are BY FAR my favorite film genre, but my favorite film is not a zombie movie.

guns are too noisy. all you would do is attract more zombies. spikes are the best things to use because they are silent and they easily puncture the skull. swords take too much energy to swing. also, its common sense that zombies can't run and all that. their muscles are dead so how could they run? they only have basic motor functions. solanum only reanimates the brain and only the basic functions of the brain. hollywood has corrupted the stereotypical zombie. everyone is wrong about what zombies can do. if you study the true essence of what a zombie is you will find that max brooks IS the ONLY CORRECT SOURCE for zombies. and yes ZOMBIES ARE REAL! the first recorded sighting was in 30,000 bc in africa and there have been a ton of sightings since all over the world. its only a matter of time till we have a massive global outbreak of solanum thus ending 98% of human life on earth in an event lasting upwards of 30 years called the zombie apocalypse.
edit: if you do need to resort to guns, 22. caliber is the best. it has very small and cheap rounds so you can carry massive amounts of ammo and it still has enough power to puncture the skull and destroy the brain.

just looking at the first question i can tell you that quiz is bull crap. previously dead bodies don't reanimate so it wouldn't matter if you lived near a cemetery or not. only freshly dead bodies infected with solanum can reanimate. a cemetery is another one of those hollywood zombie myths.

well geez....were to start...
First off, i'll just put it really simple by saying my plan has to do with me and any friends/people that can get away, and fortifying ourselves in a Costco that is very close to us. we have ( not really sure why... ) spent lots of time working out all the bugs and we decided its a good plan to stick with.
let me start by saying that, were i would agree that 28 Days Later is one of the best movies of all time. You got to remember that they are not technically zombies. They are people infected with the rage virus that cause them to act all ragy. If you remember they all starve to death at the end of the movie. Something that wouldn't happen with zombies.
Another thing. You know... if the zombies were eating flesh and they managed to get to the brain, I'm sure they would eat that too... but it really isnt easy for them to get to.
A sword doesn't take that much energy to swing. Its all based on what kind of sword you have and your knowledge to use it. I know max brooks says not to, i have read the book as well, but he talks about the best case scenario. I have a bunch of swords in my room ( ya i know, kinda strange but i like them) so when it comes down to it, i'm gonna reach for whats close to me.
Another thing, Max Brooks is a good Theorist , but i doubt anyone is really gonna know what happens if a zombie virus hits. What if it mutates? what if somehow it can make the body fully functional all the sudden. I know that your gonna be really shocked if suddenly a zombie is running at you.
And all that bits about the animals. who knows. If you remember, the idea of undead animals comes from Resident Evil. But whos to say that the virus wont mutate to include animals as well?
And honestly even if a case of the solanum virus breaks out the way Max brooks says it will... I hardly doubt it will grow easily... otherwise I'm sure we would start to see sign... especially with an ever growing world population.

I understand what catinabag is saying when he claims that there are no fast zombies. The monsters in the 28 days/weeks series are not zombies, they are infected with the rage virus. It's a small technicality, but even I call them zombies in passing.

Guns, lots of guns.
oh indeed the best solution, the most fun deffinetly. but they have to have bayonets for when the zombies get close and personal. i choose a 5 round pump action shotgun (ilegal in the uk, theyre restricted to 3) and a couple emergency 9mm semi-automatic pistols, and some spare knives as a last resort. there will be no mercy from me, no one is getting to eat my flesh! oh and finding a high vantage spot is vital, slow clumsy drones wont get there in a hurry, and you can see more to shoot!

2008-05-08, 10:16 PM
so when it comes down to it, i'm gonna reach for whats close to me.
i agree. even though spikes are easier to use, i keep two machetes under my bed. someday i'm going to hang one over my bed so it's easily grabbed. the worst places to go would be hospitals, grocery stores, and weapon supplies. people take all of their sick to hospitals. so it's just a matter of time until they go zombie on you. and as for stores and weapon supplies, a ton of people are going to flock towards those either attracting more zombies, spreading the virus, or becoming violent because they want the supplies. i believe the best plan is to get a group of about 5-7 handy people with different skills. don't take anyone that isn't going to be useful, they would only slow you down. so take 5-7 people and bike out into the middle of nowhere. there are less zombies far away from cities. you would encounter a few zombies here and there as they wonder around the earth but you would be much safer out in the wilderness then in a city of any size.

I would would say i mostly agree. We like the idea of a Costco because its easily fortified. Only one way in. But there is a worry of other people. But assuming you could control small amount of people you would have plenty of supplies to last a long wile. This is assuming that we cant get out of the city right away, of course.

i am sad and have read all of this and i have discovered that:
1. theyre slow
2. theyre mindless drones
3. swords and knives are the prefered weapons
4. stay together
5. get into the country
but i have thought this through, if you are stuck in the city, which most people would be, the best thing you can have is the skill and knowledge of parkour. you can then use the city to your advantage, getting to high and hard to reach places, and moving quickly. allong with this i think a 10" dagger of some sort in a leg holster would be best, not to big as to limit speed an movement (parkour) but long enough to cause damage. and a back up weapon such as a hand gun of some description. there i am sorted and safe for the attack.

I have a cool set of swords hidden throughout my room. One pair of blades I have would be perfect for zombies. Very light, very strong, very sharp. One of them measures in at 26" and the other is at 18". Plus, everyone knows you can run faster with a knife.
I think these would be my weapons of choice. Also, a .22 handgun would be sweet for a side arm. Both could easily be carried with me as I unicycle the streets and taking them down one by one.
Im not sure if id keep myself barricaded in somewhere, for the nights, yeah, but during the day, I think id like to be out there hunting in a way almost. Seeing how rigor mortis would be well set in their bodies, I dont think id be in too much danger, and I doubt it would be like the movies where im suddenly trapped with no way out from somewhere. Im not that dumb to get into that type of situation.
It would also be fun to set up on top of Phils Costco with some rifles and snipe. BOOM! Headshot!
Yeah, if it happened, it would be more of a holiday to me than anything to worry about.
EDIT: I may just steal a huge bus and many gallons of gas, go snowboarding for a week or two, go unicycle through Moab and other places, then after having fun id settle down and go be a ninja.

Hmm..
Well, i would probably do the same. I'd move into a city area, scope out a house area, probably the military amory (its strong i know). It would have ALL the food and ammo i would EVER need. I could stay and sleep there during the night, and go hunt in town during day. They have everything from helicopters, to jeeps, to any gun im sure. Its a big area, with lots of raised areas, for sniping of course. The whole area locks pretty tight i think if needed, and also serves as a fallout shelter i would guess.
During the day, i would go to various places, gathering thinks i need (foods i like), and also i would gather various electronics, and make a personal library for myself. I would travel to a few libraries, taking all the books i need, as well as some computers, also i would loot some movie theatres for movies they have, projectors, you name it.
I would probably live off oil lamp light at night, at the least. I would lock up at night, and then just mess around.
it would start again in the day, so called shopping when needed, and traveling to different areas. All in all, i would probably just loot every area IN my area.

Heres something to think about. We are not the only people living in our towns. Hundreds of thousands of millions of people will be wanting to do the exact same thing.
A group of 10 people in a Costco, that would work, 100 people, still seems ok, but what if 1000+ people are trying to cram and live inside of a store, and everyday many more people are trying to loot as much as possable to live off of.
Im assuming it would almost be like Extinction.

any contact with bodily fluids will spread the virus. so close combat with things like swords can actually give you the virus because of spray; that's why you never use a chainsaw. also a chainsaw is bad because of the uber loud noise.

well its not a horrible idea, you just want to make sure you live up there unnoticed. The idea generally is that a zombie wont wonder up stairs unless it finds a reason to. its a bit of an effort for them

I have a theory of a good spot to hide, zombies can't climb well; so in a far up level of a skyscraper would be good if you could securely baracade the doors and elevator.
Would this work?
That works until you run out of food and water...
Any good zombie books/movies you guys would recommend?

Well if you havent seen "28 Days later" thats probably like the best ever.
Also the NEW dawn of the dead is pretty dang good as far as zombie movies go. if you dont mind a little gore that is.
As far as books. I havent read it but i hear that the book "World War Z" is pretty good.
But if you can stand comic books i would HIGHLY recommend "Walking Dead"

Haha, seen 28 days AND weeks later, can't wait till months comes out next year.
IMO I think that the new Dawn of the Dead sucked, couldn't even watch all the way through.
I just bought World War Z like, 2 or 3 days ago. :p
Not really a comic fan though so...ya.

destroy the stairs. your best bet is to get into a higher story then destroy the stairs (as quietly as possible of course), the zombies can't hop the gap.

Bring a lot of food up with you first.
Food runs out...Fast...And even if you did bring enough food, a lot of people might have the same idea as you to go in a tower, so then your food supplies = less.
What would you do in this scenario:
Zombie chased you into your bathroom. You have all the normal bathroom equipment and a lighter as well as some house keys in your pockets. There's no windows and the vent is to small to crawl through. You have the toilet, bathtub, sink, wood cabinets, shower curtain, towels, and 1 small glass mirror (6 inches by 6 inches).
Zombie is 28 later style, fast, can spit blood into your face, and if any blood gets in you, you're infected.
What would you do?

If the zombies are only capable of walking, you would either have to be badly disabled or completely stupid to get eaten! in which case you deserve it!
plans would change dramatically depending on whether or not they could run..if they couldn't, i would just run around hitting them on the head, if they could run, i would drive to the local MOD (army camp place) and sit it out. the have countless tanks and guns and everything so zombies wouldnt stand a chance :)

Walk away and keep shooting. They are slow. Depending on how set the rigor mortis is, some of them will hardly be able to move at all.

Pull up a chair and watch them get squished by tanks...
The zombies would have difficulty getting in anyway, 12ft razor wire fencing all the way around and frequent patrols...
They would actually be very little threat to humanity if they could only walk slowly

If you saw a zombie performing a 'Kids From Fame' number, you'd be pretty distracted too.

I work with a few hospital epidemiologists and infectious disease doctors and I've had more than a few zombie conversations, either on the basis of the office building, which is frequented by cadavers on the "forbidden" floors, or on the topic of infection control, because it's easy to recommend zombie movies to infectious disease specialists-- it almost seems too appropriate for them to know these things. This little slice of academia was passed on to me recently:
A group of bio-statisticians from the University of Ottawa introduced a mathematical model for zombie outbreaks and published it in a peer review journal, found here (I would have cut & pasted more, but the format is dodgy):
http://www.mathstat.uottawa.ca/~rsmith/Zombies.pdf
WHEN ZOMBIES ATTACK!: MATHEMATICAL MODELLING OF AN OUTBREAK OF ZOMBIE INFECTION
Abstract
Zombies are a popular figure in pop culture/entertainment and they are usually portrayed as being brought about through an outbreak or epidemic. Consequently, we model a zombie attack, using biological assumptions based on popular zombie movies. We introduce a basic model for zombie infection, determine equilibria and their stability, and illustrate the outcome with numerical solutions. We then refine the model to introduce a latent period of zombification, whereby humans are infected, but not infectious, before becoming undead. We then modify the model to include the
effects of possible quarantine or a cure. Finally, we examine the impact of regular, impulsive reductions in the number of zombies and derive conditions under which eradication can occur. We show that only quick, aggressive attacks can stave off the doomsday scenario: the collapse of society as zombies overtake us all.
