Last summer I got a Trials Bike, didn't ride it much, but this spring I am really excited to try to get good at the sport. I bought a 2003 Monty 219 Alp (the blue & white one) but I got Magura H33s on it. I think it is a good bike for learning.
So does anyone elses here ride Bike Trials?
I have been practicing lately. I have almost got pedal kicks, about 5 rear wheel hops (hopefully I will get it good soon), sidedrop, endo sidedrop, etc. Really basic stuff.
Here is a guy from my area who is my age, and is really good. He is sponsored by Meta Bikes.

Anyway, if anyone else on the forums likes the sport or rides it, lets chat about it.

Search for second hand Echo, Gu, Adamant, Zoo and Czar bikes... They are not so expensive...
Monty and Koxx are very expensive... And they are easier to brake than Echo and other chinese bikes...!
Bike Trials are very fun... Ride around the city... just to relax :D:D:D ;)

I used to ride trials. I found it really hard. Maybe because I was still young and I think it helps a lot to have a little more muscle.
That looks like a sick/expensive trials bike- why is he wearing soccer shin pads?

Nah, I have owned a trials bike before but I wouldn't call the stuff I did trials. I learned some really basic stuff then sold it for the same price I bought it.

Levi, do you still have your bike? What is/what it?
He wears soccer shin pads because he doesn't like 661s, and he wants light protection/
He rides an even nicer bike now;)

Yeah, it was pretty sweet. I had never rode a trials bike before that, so I couldn't do much more than bunny hop (or whatever term bikers use) with it, but it was nice. I would definitely get one if I had the money for it.

Yes, but for a nice competition bike isn't expensive. Trial is cheaper than other bike sports.
The biggest problem in trials is that to start you need to spend a lot of money, it's hard to start with a 100 bucks bike!
And if you think, still around the price of a unicycle!
You can find a frame for a V-Brake, and use some BMX parts... But you will spend the same 350+ of a second hand chinese bike!

Plus, once you start other sports like Hockey, you pay like alot of money to join, and then equipment that can be really pricey. I think trials biking and other styles of biking are great ways to spend money, same with unicycling.
Trials biking is a blast, I am actually started to get better at it, which makes it more fun, so if anyone is starting, don't get frustrated. It is a great sport.

Isaac
That's why Bike Trials do not get big quiclky!
A lot of peoples see good riders doing big drops, gaps and sidehops... And when they start to ride they think that aren't getting better...
In bike trials you need to train everything on the floor first... And latter do everything in the obstacles... so you need a little bit of paciense too... But when you start to do more cool moviments... You can't stop riding!

Well, I don't really do any sports that cost a lot of money and comparing it to unicycling is really a good comparison at all because when you start unicycling, you usually start with a $100 unicycle and then move to around the $400 range. With trials biking, you START near the $400 range and depending on your skill, it can go over $1000...
Never the less, I still think trial biking is super awesome, it's just that no used bikes are like, $200 or $250 at least...

isaac steiner

Well, I wouldn't mind upgrading sometime, but I think I will wait until I am some better. And no it isn't to heavy, it's a feather, im used to my old Haro Escape 8.3, it was a tank, it was like 36 lbs, and this is like 23 lbs so it feels feather.

Cool, how bad is the Norco evolve trials? There is an old one on CL for 180 or something. It has the 26 wheels. Which size wheel is better for what and who?
isaac steiner
2008-04-24, 01:40 AM
The Evolve is nice, I think, I don't know much about Stock bikes. But yeah for $180 that's good. I would definatly go for it if you are looking to get into trials biking, it's loads of fun. And for your size, it would be great, for me riding a Stock would be too big, but yeah, you could ride either a long Mod, or a Stock.
Hope that helps.
Isaac
PS - If you don't know.
Stock = 26"
Mod = 20"

Ok, so you're saying that if I wanted to go with the 20' wheel style trial bike (mod), i would have to go with a longer wheelbase frame than say, yours?

I'm building one this summer. Going to be nice, sun rims hope hubs, dt spokes, marino frame or something in 24in, echo hd, hope stem, riser bars, disc front to back, pivital seat+post, any bb echo forged cranks, some pedals I already have. Yeah, its going to be sweet, it'll be my first trials bike, also street. Thing is going to cost an arm and leg, but should be worth it. It's gonna be ss and first, but once i get some cash I might put some gears on it later on.

yeah, i'm saving money til the end of the year. I sorta have it mentally budgetted, not based on any money amounts.
1.pelican case for my camera
2.trial bike
3.car
i wanna get an oldschool ford escort, then cut the roof off, and make a convertable.
ive got a plan also for the car, i'm going to weld a bar behind the 2 front seats, and then lay some sheet metal across the back, maybe making the back pop up also. Like, a latchy spring system.
Oh, i'd rip out all the upholstery, and then weld bracing in the back, so the car doesnt fold.

I might be getting my first trials bike tomorrow!!! It's an old used mod Monty, but hey, it's $100, my first bike, sounds like it's in good condition, and is the only thing I've seen in my area for the past 2 months. It also looks like it's been modded because it has a red and I think an orange rim (could be surface rust) in the front. I don't really know though, sounds good to me :)

if your going to be doing curbs, you can use a normal bike. A bmx bike is not a good option for Trials. Trials bikes and BMX bikes are different. A bmx bike has different brakes, way heavier, and its handlebars are really weird.
I see what your going at, you normally see Monty's, that have seats. But, those are old 1990's Monty Mod Trial Bikes. You could go on your local craigs list, and search bike trial, and find one.

Yah, the guy I bought my trials bike from does his trials on a mountain bike. He said that the main difference is that there's a certain "sweet spot" where you're gonna be able to hop, and that it's just much easier to find and there's a bigger one on a trials bike. If you wanna devote the time to learning on a mountain bike, you should go for it.

There anyway to convert this MTB into a trials bike? I know it is possible to get a larger bash ring, and there seems to be a lot of space for bigger rim/ tire. But is it possible to remove some of the rear or front "gear rings?" (not real bike savvy)?

Lots use mtb's as trials when beginning. Makes it harder, but cheaper. The best thing to do is get good brakes, or pads, if you have v breaks get some nice pads from webcyclery and possibly gring your rims.
For the best advise make an account on observedtrials.net, but do not tell them you unicycle or anything of the sort. Just say you need some helping starting, for the most part they are really helpful or have been to me.
btw trials bikes use low gearing, they aren't fast. As for parts once again best off going to observedtrials.net.

So after upgrading to a new mountain bike, I decided to convert my old one into a trials bike. I'm mainly seeing if I like it, and if it starts to grow on me, I'll probably buy an actual trials bike and ditch my half and half bike I'm using now.
I'm still learning the most basic of things, but it's going alright, and I have some really good trails around to practice on. But what I really need are some good brakes. I just have the crappy cable ones that came with it, and they're so mushy that to get the bike completely stopped I have to jam as hard as possible, and sometimes I still find myself creeping forward or backward. It gets ridiculous after awhile. My hands and fingers go white just from trying to stop the bike... But I digress.
What would you suggest in the area of brakes? (and how much approx. would they cost?)

It sounds like you just need some new brake pads.Go to the local bike shop and ask them whether you need new brake pads or whether you should get new brakes for basic trials

I'm getting into trials on my mtb and have a question.
My uni jumping footing is right foot back, to the left for side hops. My left foot is what i grind/ crank grap on.
When i ride a bike my costing position (?) is the same as on my uni (right foot back) but when i go up into a manual or mono i kick my right foot (dominant) down from the top?
Will this be bad for trials? Should I start learning with my right foot at the front to eventually get into some street trials?

Never mind. I've been watching some tutorials by sergitobt on youtube and have worked out everything. I'm looking into getting a trials bike soonish.

Lol, soz; triple post.
I would extremely appreciate it if anyone could tell me where I could get a mod trials bike in NSW. Whether second-hand, from a bike shop or whatever, i'd love to hear.
