the best way to explain what unigrid is, is probably to get you to check out the
following home page...
http://central.co.nz/~hjarvie/unigrid.html
this is Unicycling New Zealand's home page put together by Harold Jarvie, and a
little help for myself. It is heavily under construction (by novices) and the
UniGrid link only has a few 30k pics on it, the dialogue is yet to come.
Basically it's Gridiron on unicycles, it can be very rough, we have not played
it for many months as when we got in to it in a big way, all the uni's fell to
pieces. Last friday I got shipment of 25 unicycles that are stronger than the
previous ones we had, and next thursday the games begin again! My Unicycle was
the only one that held up with out a problem, would you guess it... it's a SEM.
(I know of only two SEMs in this country)
In unigrid it is favourable to be kitted up with a little padding (see photos at
the home page), helmet, shoulder and chest pads, elbow pads, steel wrist
supports, knee and chin guards too! the game has three halves (just to be
different!), each half is only five minutes long! but after that we're usually
stuffed! A very fast moving game indeed! I tried to start basketball and there
was limited interest, hockey did not grab them either, one day I was not present
at my club nite, UniGrid was created! It started off... kill everyone and score
a goal! Now there's a bit of skill coming in to the game. Of course a must is
the ability to pick the ball off the ground. I teach this by training my
students to uplift a ball point pen off the floor. If they can't do this then
another player can team up with them and flick the ball to them in the game.
We've found any skill can play the game, even if none can pick the ball up, we
just add a good player that favours neither side who flicks up the ball to the
closest one or holds it until it's snatched off him! In summary, Unigrid put my
club on the map, when word got around of this game, my club attendance doubled!
keep an eye on the home page from month to month, we done do alot to it but
we're getting there slowly.
keep in touch...
