So I was riding my b*ke today through the underpass this afternoon (my daily commute route). There has been construction going on there for several months and is closed to cars. They were there working w/ a crane and this huge 20 ft tall ladder.

I was riding along w/o hands (I've noticed some transferable skill to uni). I didn't see the support thing connecting the two ends of the ladder and I rode into it w/ my head.

There were no noticeable marks on my helmet, but I got a small scrape on my elbow, bent my left crank, rim, derailer, and twisted the bars. Luckily my LBS was just a few blocks away and they got it semi-ridable for free, so I can get home.

This prettymuch totaled my 20-25 yr old free road bike (after my mtb got stolen (http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showthread.php?t=62519)), which isn't the end of the world since I've been thinking of getting a nice one, so I can use it to get to me and my Muni to the trails (this roadie is horribly slow).

you know what i just realised, the september 11 attacks happened on, as you americans say for some strange reason, 9 11,(or as the rest of the world say 11/09) which is the same as your emergency number 911.
coincidence? I think not!

edit: looks you bikes are unlucky for you.

Bummer. But now you get to go bike shopping.

I've been looking at getting a commuter friendly city bike. I want something with internal gears, can fit a rear rack, and reasonably sporty handling. Most bikes in that style are comfort style or city utility bikes. I want something more sporty than that.

Breezer (http://www.breezerbikes.com/) and Civia (http://www.civiacycles.com/) have a bike like that, but they dress it up to the point that it's $1800. No way am I going to lock up an $1800 bike around the city. Then just last week I saw that Felt has a bike called the X:City (http://www.feltracing.com/08/product.asp?catid=1504,1525&pid=8763) that looks like what I want at a much more reasonable price ($799 retail). Looks like a neat city commuter bike. Even has an eccentric bottom bracket for adjusting chain tension.

I still need to see the X:City bike in person, but it looks like that may be my second bike and a bike I can use for for commuter style duty. I still have my fixie for fun riding, but the fixie isn't suited for carrying groceries or lots of gear.

Bike shopping is fun.

I guess helmets can be useful for road riding, after all.
