View Full Version : Threads of unicycle pedals

Recently, me pedals were in need of repair, and I had them replaced at the local
bike shop. To my surprise, the repair guy shows me that both of my pedals had
left-handed threads. Is this the norm, or is my uni just weird? (My uni is an
Oxford, I believe--I bought it used a few weeks ago.)

I don't know if this is common, but I imagine it could be. Finding a right
handed crank, without the sprocket for a bicycle, is next to impossible at most
bike stores. The easy way to replace a crank then is to just get 2 lefthanded
cranks and live with the slow unwinding of the right side pedal. I've considered
doing this with my cranks when they break rather than wait to order a new right
side unicycle crank.
Anyone have an opinion as to the dangers or dificulties if both cranks are
left handed?

This is not the norm. I could see why it would be done. two lefts is a lazy way
to get a spiderless right hand crank.
The disadvantage is you're right hand pedal may constantly unscrew itself.
Unless you go backwards a lot.
If you want a right hand crank with no spider --
buy one with a spider, cut it off and refinish it. This crank arm will have an
offset originally meant for chain alignment.
Or
Order a right front tandem crank arm. Just like the left side but with right
hand threads.

I find this very weird. To my knowledge the threads on the left and right pedals
are different, although I'm not sure which side has which thread. I recently had
to replace my right pedal and found that it had right-hand thread (contrary to
my intuition), but when I tried to undo my left pedal to see which thread it
had, it was too tight in either direction, so I didn't bother. So perhaps my
unicycle is weird as well.
In hind-sight, I don't think this post was really much help. Maybe someone else
could clear it up for both of us.

P.S. I still you pedals should have different threads.
