I'm practicing also, and mostly I too don't get much more than five seconds.
From my experience, I think, it's important to bend your knees and keep your legs forward as much as possible, and to avoid falling over, you simply start walking. Gain a reflex for turning your body 180 degrees after starting to fall over, this to keep from falling on your back.
But, I too like to get some advice from a professional hand walker :)

I used to have a good friend who could walk around for five minutes, up and down stairs. Arms like legs.
He had me practice up against a wall doing hand push-ups with your legs extended up the wall. Then walk away from the wall. Or hand stand with your legs on your elbows for balance pratice and then raise your legs up into position and back down until you get the hang of it.
Try watching for the end of this clip. He does some hand stands / walk tricks.

Take care, handstands put alot of stress on the hands at an unusual angle. If you aren't particularly well conditioned to handle this you could develop joint problems. like me. Now I have to get both my wrists X-Rayed next week (from handstands amongst other things).

i find that you need to arch your back to walk...if your are staying still, try to straighten you legs.........other than that it just takes a lot of practice just like the rest of this stuff

I'm trying to learn static handstands at the moment, for parkour/freerunning. My best is about 10 seconds, and I can walk around for pretty much as long as I want. There really is no special way, it's just practice. However, you may want to check the tutorial on www.beastskills.com to cehck you have good form and technique, so as to avoid injury.

If you're riding a unicycle, you already have the balance for it. The problem is you need a lot of arm strength to correct yourself if your balance shifts, so practice lots of hand stand push ups on a wall, once you have the strength for it, it becomes really easy.

After you get the normal handstand/walk down, try one handers, those are my favorite to do.
