I've been noticing that the server has been going down a lot recently and figured that Gilby might need some help, soooo.... what do you all say we hit the donate button, if everyone donates just one dollar(or the equivalent) then we could possibly help Gilby keep all of our internet addicted behinds happy. So what do you say? Do you want to help him out? I do... I'm donating right now.... ok so not RIGHT now obviously because I'm making this thread but I'm going to donate as soon as my dad gets home, because he controls my money.... but yeah... LETS ALL DONATE A DOLLAR!!!!!! (http://www.unicyclist.com/donate)

Ill donate soon.
I was just looking at isohunt.com, and saw that when their website went down, they got $1300 a day in donations.
Like them, I think most of us here are pretty committed to this site, and like to have it running smoothly for whatever reason we use it for. Gallery, learning tricks, about parts, rides, competitions, chatting in MR, and discussions throughout JC, and all the other stuff that goes on here.
EDIT: Would be cool if we had a meter thing so we can see how much gets donated per week, or per month.

I don't use the site too much anymore, but I'm in for $10.

Thanks everyone who donated. This website is run at a loss when just looking at the cash flows. The recent downtimes I haven't figured out yet... as the server didn't show much resources being used to account for the slowness in loading a page. I assume the problem is the result of the gallery software, but who knows. I do plan on upgrading the server and moving it, with a fellow unicyclist helping me maintain the server.
I'm also going to be getting my T-shirts for sale online soon. My girlfriend, who currently doesn't have a job, is going to get the T-shirts inventoried and up online to be sold, so that will likely help this site become neutral as far as cash flows go.

What are these costs for? The server hardware itself, the forum software, the domain, or something else? I don't fully understand the process you go through to keep the forum online.

The biggest cost is the monthly cost of the dedicated server to run this site, which is about $250/month. I plan to buy a server, and colocate it on the network of a fellow unicyclist. Then the software expenses are about $30/yr, which isn't to bad. Then you also have the expense of my time to maintain everything.

And now, registered users have ads at the bottom of the page like you would if you didn't log in. Mmmmm!
I don't mind them.
