or it'd be better if Gilby could make a subforum amongst RSU, Unicycle Product Reviews, etc.. called: "Your Unicycle Media"

In that forum would be for Riding Pictures and Unicycle Pictures.. two small little forums for just those. It'll definitely encourage people to take more riding pics and some interesting unis to emerge where proper discussion can take place instead of it all being crammed in one thread.

I've got my Nimbus ISIS set up for trials riding currently. Round crown frames are so underrated, how many foot on crown tricks do you guys really do? I can still glide fine with it and I bet I could pull off a standup ww with some grip tape on it. Say goodbye to inner thigh and knee bashing! I'm throwing on a luna tire soon, I'm getting sick of the CC's sidewalls.

What are the pros/cons of rounded/nonrounded crowns? I will post my uni soon. Almost stock.
Rounded
Pros:
Stronger and more robust design
No corners to hit your knees or inner thighs on during SIF
The design supports the philosophy of simplicity inherent in unicycling.Cons:
Foot on crown tricks may be more difficult
Some may argue aesthetics though I think they are cool in a rebellious way - reject the norms, woo!Flat Crown/Nimbus II style
Pros:
Solid surface to place foot during foot on crown tricks
Aesthetics - though this is is totally personal opinion the majority might agreeCons:
Inherently weaker design (who really even breaks these besides Cody anyway though?)
Strong potential for personal injury during SIF riding or unispin type tricks when pedals are missed. Please fill in anything I've missed or debate any points I've made.

My legs rubbing against the frame pretty much rubbed the decals off, I wanted to paint it, but knew that would rub off too eventually, so out came the tape. I kinda like the two tone look too, I'll have to think of a more stylish way to do it when the tape wears off.

137s are the best, I guess you do mainly street(on flat) and flat though. I have 104s (I think) on my freestyle and they feel way short, I wouldnt want to trials on anything that short.

That's going to be very nice UniDude.

A funny thing, the Nimbus trials isis does not come with those spacers in between the bearing and the crank. On my uni the bearing started to slip, usually when I did a side hop or botched a landing. I called UDC and they told me how to fix the bearing so it wouldn't slip. I didn't want to go to the trouble/expensive of pulling the bearing off the rest of the way (required for their fix) so I pounded it back on and made a spacer out of pvc, it only contacts the bottom flange of the bearing on the axle and the crank. So far it has worked great.

Anyway, the spacers that came with the KH hub also keep the bearing from slipping. I'd say they are very important, UDC said they were not required (on the trails ISIS) and that I was they only one they had heard of that has had this slipping issue. I can see with the KH frame it would be even more important to have them than with the Nimbus frame. When the bearing slips it puts some outward stress on the frame. A steel frame can handle a certain amount of stessing like this, but an aluminum frame wouldn't last long before it cracked.

Long story short. Nimbus isis unis from UDC don't have them and you probably don't need them, unless you are like me and experience this rare bearing slip. If I had them I would make sure they were on my uni.

I wish UDC included them, it not like they cost much. And for some reason the picture of the Nimbus ISIS hub on the website has them, so apparently whomever builds up the unis, throws them away :( .

sp4rky-m4rky
2008-01-04, 04:50 PM
have you ever tried 125's?
No, I have I think 104s on my freestyle but I havnt ever done much hopping or tried any trials with them. I went for 137s on my KH because I do quite a bit of trials as well as street on it and I believe its better to do street with 137s than trials with 125s

so apparently whomever builds up the unis, throws them away :( .

Thats what you get for living in america :D

how important are the spacers in the hub?
Well.. I lost my other spacer when I took bearings off. My uni has been over half year without the other spacer without damaging or causing any problems. At least I haven't noticed anything yet.

Do you have spacers? If not they are not supposed to go on all the way. ISIS is a tapered interface, its like the axle is wedged into the crank, just like square taper.

After lots of use the cranks might go on further.

Chrome is possibly the worst surface to paint, hard and slippery. There are a few good tutorials out there for painting your uni on this site and there is some good ones on the internet for painting bikes (same thing but they don't deal with chrome)

Good luck

wire wheels on a grinder work best imo...thats how i did mine but it wasnt chrome, but i think a wire wheel would take just about anything off, just make sure that the wire isnt too thick and goes right through the metal. you need to find a guage that will take off the chrome and also leave the metal:p

Very cool, looks good. What size cranks is he running?
125s.

When I ordered the uni is was going to be for just cruising around in the village, and some XC type thing, but mark didn't want anything too big. And then a week later I discover some awesome muni land (where kieron (livetouni) lives, in rowhedge) with big hills, and I feel that 137s may have been a better compromise for the different purposes - but nevertheless, we'll see how the 125's go for muni :p (I assumed that they can't be much worse than me with 150s on my 29").

Here is a pic of it in the box :D
http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/4858/1020692hv9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

We had a bit of trouble with the frame being too small, or the tyre being too big - the crown of the frame was literally wedged onto the tyre. So, I gave roger a call just to check this wasn't anything too abnormal, and as I thought I could solve it by just putting some shims in the bearings (I'd never done that before so I just checked). He also mentioned that some of the frame and tyre sizes vary slightly, so maybe we were unlucky to get two that didn't fit together.

In the end I just used some corrugated cardboard (from the packaging (how useful :p)) in the bearings, and filed down part of the tyre where it rubbed.

All is well :D

They dont break, they bend.
My Moment hub that I havnt grinded with and done very little crank or pedal grabbing with has the bending issue goin on, on both sides. Just lacing and riding will pull the flanges out of their original position. Personally it is a good thing for me, cause now I have more frame and crank options.

When it's made from parts which are different makes, and it is not a unicycle you buy stock (standard). Obviously if it's a custom nimbus that means the core of the uni is gona be a nimbus part.

I suggest getting a wider rim. Like a KH (47mm), Try-all (drilled or undrilled, they are both 47mm) or the nimbus 19" rim (45mm I think).

Nimbus is "medium wide". Alexrim is narrow (38mm only). I really suggest getting a KH rim or either a Try-All if you want colors, they are availible at www.renegadejuggling.com (http://www.renegadejuggling.com) in you live in North America or www.division8.ca .

If you live in europe, there is www.municycle.com (http://www.municycle.com), www.kahero.fr (http://www.kahero.fr), www.cdk.fr (http://www.cdk.fr), and some others.

i would rather get the kh cause i can get it from unicycle.com and that is where i am getting everything else and they will build the wheel. is the kh as good as the tryall

other than that what do u guys think

It's pretty much the same thing. Try-all offers their rims in many colors and you can choose between drilled and undrilled. Those are the only main differences beside the eyelet on the rim I don't know any other differences.

EDIT: The try-all UNDRILLED got eyelets too.

Customised my nimbus today.

Had a nimbus trials 2005 but kept breaking cranks so have just changed it.

New specs.
Onza Hog Rim 47mm wide.
Nimbus ISIS Hub.
KH Moment cranks 125mm.
Snafu Concave Pedals.
Cromo Seatpost.
KH Street Saddle, Black and Green.

Will post some pictures when I get back from the BJC.

Built the wheel myself and already I can feel the difference that the wider rim makes to stability.

I think it is as good if you upgrade to KH freeride saddle and KH moment cranks. The nimbus has a slightly narrower rim (doesn't matter for muni) and a slightly heavier frame (also doesn't matter for muni).

Narrow rims sucks for muni, and weight does matter a bit, cause a lighter muni will be easier to ride for a long time.

I guess it's kinda personal. I have a 32mm rim and a 2.7" tyre on my muni and it's great. I can't see how a wider rim would be any different apart from being heavier. And 300 grams weight will probably not make a noticable difference.

A wider rim will allow for a larger volume, wider and more grippy tyre which will help cusion the ride and give better grip. Thats the advantages I see. You have to ballence this with the weight, If you dont need the exta volume and grip, why not save the weight and make a lighter, nimble and more responsive Muni.

When I ordered the uni is was going to be for just cruising around in the village, and some XC type thing, but mark didn't want anything too big. And then a week later I discover some awesome muni land (where kieron (livetouni) lives, in rowhedge) with big hills, and I feel that 137s may have been a better compromise for the different purposes - but nevertheless, we'll see how the 125's go for muni :p (I assumed that they can't be much worse than me with 150s on my 29").

...

All is well :D
while I have no doubt that it did work, cardboard disintegrates over time, you would be better off if you used a metal shim or at least plastic.

ERIC- wishing he could afford getting a new Nimbus 26" MUni
I did this after having clearance issues after puting a 2.25 Maxis Max Daddy on my 20" 2007 Nimbus X. I used several layers of paper board which compressed and I had to add more several times.

Be weary of this as the bearing holders won't be as strong as they'd normally be.

On my X, the allen bolts thread into the frame and would back out, so I got some longer screws, washers, lock washers, and locking nuts (4 of each) at my local hardware store. I haven't ridden it tons since, but no problems yet. (Tire changes take ~ 1/3rd longer.)

it should be "nimbi". "-us" is an ending borrowed from second declension masculine latin endings to indicate nominative case, singular. the plural nominative case for second declension masculine endings is "-i".

no it's not, it has no brake mounts and weighs more. However, if it pretty close, deffinitely worth considering.
