so what's the pre-consensus?
i think the previews look neat, but I'm torn....except for I Robot, every Will Smith movie has been great (at least very entertaining)
But as far as zombie movies go (which this seems like) if the hero doesn't have a chainsaw for a hand (or at least mention the Necrenomicon), i always leave dissapointed......

Does this movie share a similar origin as the movie The Omega Man? It looks similar but I never read the book so don't know. I definitely want to see it.

It was a neat movie, technology wise...that is all... I found it to be a pretty crappy, boring movie...with neat effects
edit: neat... repetitive, falsly overwhelming effects....
edit #2...
i realize that a lot of will smith's movies are like that...but the rest had stories that were much more enjoyable, i robot seemed to use technology in place of any real story...ooooh robots....no no no, millions of robots! <yawn>

I think it's a remake. I searched the trailer on youtube and in someones description there was this,
I Am Legend is an upcoming 2007 American post-apocalyptic science fiction horror film directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Will Smith. It is the fourth film adaptation of Richard Matheson's 1954 novel I Am Legend, following The Last Man on Earth (1964), The Omega Man (1971) and the straight to video I Am Omega (2007). Smith plays Robert Neville, possibly Earth's only survivor of a man-made virus. He works to create a cure but is stalked by nocturnal mutant survivors of the plague.

Just got back from seeing it.
I liked it a lot, went there without knowing much about the movie except what I got from the trailer, and I've never heard of The Omega Man.
Some good action scenes, some of them kinda scary. They also managed to make it pretty sci-fi without being overly roll-your-eyes corny, although the CG mutants were over done maybe, but it could have been worse.

My wife and I saw it today. I thought it was very enjoyable. The story is suspenseful, gripping, tense, and engaging. And Will Smith is great.
But I thought overall it lacked the reflection on the human condition that other movies of the same genre such as Night of the Living Dead, 28 Days Later, among others, have. On this account it left me unsatisfied.
I enjoyed the Bob Marley connection, though.

That movie.
And if you have complaints or compliments, please remember to indicate whether you're talking about the book or the movie, as I'm sure they are two different things. I'm still waiting to see it...

Old proverb say:
He who go to movie expecting it to be like book will end up saying...movie stinks
Some movies are more like the book than others, but that's not necessarily a good thing. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1973, Gene Wilder) is considered a classic while the more recent version (Johnny Depp) is considered twisted and strange. But in many ways it's closer to the book.
I've seen a couple of different renditions of the book Dune done as movies. The one that was most faithful to the book was dead boring. Yawn. The much more fanciful, high-budget, 1985 version was much more interesting to watch. Neither captured the book worth beans.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory needs to be done as a cartoon to live up to the book. For Dune, it probably needs a ginormous budget and three films (or at least two), a-la Lord of the Rings.

Did he set that trap and forget about it or did the monsters?
The movie was entertaining but it went from being really cool to just another zombie movie. And I agree when the dog died I felt almost as sad as when Wilson died in Castaway, the movie just kinda ended right there for me.

They must have placed the trap after he set up basically the same trap for them, and they saw how effective it was (and they were all waiting for him at sunset)
I'm glad the dog was already a monster before he had to kill it

Yeah that was my first thought but prior to that he noted how they lost all human traits and implied they were getting dumber. (After that one exposed itself to sunlight)

Didn't he make some special note of the fact that the one exposed himself to sunlight when previously they avoided this at all costs? And wasn't this supposed to imply some ominous change, e.g. intelligence, drive, and/or planning?

This film was crap. I had to struggle to keep myself awake. How boring can a film get? Why did they have to make the zombie people with CG. It would have been a lot better if it was done like 28 days and other zombie films where they use real people and proper special effects.
There was so many stupid bits in this film. Like when he fell from the trap and stabbed his leg. Why not get up and hop (only stabbed one leg). Besides if you had man-eating zombie people after you, I think the pain in your leg would not stop you from RUNNING LIKE F*CK. The dogs where waiting for the sun to disappear before they attacked (fair enough), but why didn't all the zombie people also come out. Especially the one who had the dogs.
This is just some of the ridiculous, typical film-making BS! There was so much more. I would like to do you all a huge favour and warn you all about wasting your time to see this film if i am not already too late.

Yeah, i saw this a while ago with one of my friends and i didn't like it. Honestly, there were stupid parts (like hunting elk out of a sports car with a machine gun) and a whole bunch of boring cinema that i'm sure the director would claim is atmospheric. It was like castaway, but worse in that even less happened. Personally, i think that even though it was crass and very CG I, Robot was a more entertaining film that raised some interesting (even if tried and tested) issues.
