Just wanted to say Hi, and maybe give you some idea of who I am. My name is Ron
Rieder, I live west of Boston MA in a town called West Boylston. I work as the
Assistant Director of a residential group home for adults suffering from a major
mental illness. I have an assortment of hobbies: Biking ( Mt. bike & recumbent
bike), soccer, photography, and guitar to name a few.

I got my first unicycle back when I was about 10 (I'm 27 now <g>) I believe it
was a Sears. However, it fell apart after a couple days and my parents decided
to go for a Schwinn (24"). It was the dead of winter in western PA so I worked
my way along a bench in my grandfathers woodworking shop. Amazingly I still have
all my toes, fingers, and facial features :-) We tried a six inch wide board
outside, but that didn't last long. Spring was much more profitable. I took that
Schwinn overseas when our family moved and then to college. Still have the same
tire on it (must be of the same vintage that John Foss mentioned). I haven't
riden it much since college but am getting back to it. I need to get the uni
tuned up or something. I have to lean to the right to get it upright, very
strange and annoying tendency. Any ideas on this phenomenon would be
appreciated.

Thanks,

Ron

I know this sounds obvious, but haveyou checked spokes for tension etc?

I had this prob on my Pashley. The cause was one side of the seat support had
collapsed, leaning the seat and thus my hips. Check that the saddle is square
with the rest of the machine.

Check out the wheel. It should be centered between the forks and not wobble much
while it spins. Also, the spokes should be tight. If any of these aren't right,
you may want to take the wheel in to be trued. I just had it done one a
loose-spoked wheel from an old Schwinn, and have my other Schwinn wheel in now.
The trick may be finding someone with the apparatus to hold the wheel while
truing. The guy at the shop I went to had to order some jigs to hold the wheel,
so I go back to him now.

You should also take a look at the bearings, although if they are off you'll
probably notice a wobbly wheel.

Welcome Tim.

In your price range, I'd go for the Pashley:
http://www.unicyclesource.com/Pashley_Cycles_of_England21323.html You should
have enough money left over to replace the seat with a nice Miyata seat or
something. Of course, you may like the seat, like Ted Howe of Sacramento who
will buy it from you...

I don't know trails in CT. You should be able to find out about local stuff from
local bike shops and clubs. They often have trail maps. You can probably also
find some good stuff by doing some searching on the Web.

If you're ever down on Long Island, try the Nassau/Suffolk Greenbelt Trail. This
runs roughly along the Bethpage State Parkway, near the Nassau/Suffolk border.
The trail actually goes all the way from North shore to South, but the northern
part was not legal for bikes last time I was there (years ago). Despite the
flatness of Long Island, the parts that parallel Bethpage Parkway are a blast
and a half to ride. Who says you need mountains for MUni?
