View Full Version : Smoking Poll

This new thread about smoking http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65618
has made me curious about the smoking/ nonsmoking habits of our community.
As a reformed smoker myself, I understand the difficulties of trying to quit. Quitting was one of the hardest things I've ever done. But smokefree for 20 years, ... life is better. I encourage
nonsmokers to never try it;
reformed smokers to remember that for many of us doom is only one cig away;
smokers to do whatever necessary to break the habit and kill the cycle to the next generation.

I indicated that I currently smoke, but have to point out that my smoking is rather limited: I have three or four cigars per month at most. I tried cigarettes at two different points during childhood due to peer pressure and couldn't stand it, so I've never been a cigarette smoker.
(that last statement could be taken as false if we include the four packs of Lucky Strike secondhand smoke I got daily all through my childhood from my parents)

Well I tried it last year and thought it was rank... I don't believe there's an answer for that one

No I think that means you've smoked for less than a week, not you've smoked less than a week ago.

I put I've never smoked. There's this kid in my Spanish class that can barley breathe, and has a lung infection from it. I really don't want to ruin my life. Smoking has potential to do that.

What does "less than a week" mean in the second choice?

What does "less than a week" mean in the second choice?
It means, "You tried it, but for less than a week."
I haven't, and don't plan on ever smoking, unless I'm on fire, then I might make an exception.

After being a driving force through Jr. Hi and early High School in getting my dad to quit after 40+ years of heavy smoking (his smoking was so bad that when he quit several of his friends quit, saying: "If he quit I can quit"), I got hooked the first time in college from social smoking, then quit and got hooked two more times in my 20's.
I smoked a lot of filterless and roll-your-own tobacco (Drum), so it was no passing fancy. Towards the end of that period, if I didn't buy a cig I could go weeks but if I bought a pack it was gone in a day or two. I made a resolution to not smoke past 30, ran out of sigs three days before my 30th bd in 1990 and haven't smoked a cig or gotten hooked since.
However, since 1994 I have up to a half dozen cigars or so a year, mostly during golf, camping, and holidays. Good Scotch helps.

A doctor once told me that nicotine is the most addictive substance you can buy without a prescription. I never heard any confirmation of this anywhere else, but I've also never heard anything to the contrary. Fortunately I was never a smoker. Also I'm happy to live in a state where smoking is now banned from (nearly) all public places, including bars unless they're owner-operated.
Casinos, being on Indian land in CA, allow smoking. Some have non-smoking sections, but apparently there's a direct connection between smoking and gambling, so smoking is likely to be around for a while there. I hear it's now banned in big Las Vegas casinos though; score!

A doctor once told me that nicotine is the most addictive substance you can buy without a prescription.I wouldn't doubt it. I heard an news story recently that with every initial cigarette the amount of nicotine receptors in the brain rapidly multiply, making it quickly addictive very hard to quit.

It means that you tried but didn't want to move onto the next step or what Sir Wojak makes sense too. :D

Which is why I say some of us are only one away from that prison if ....
Even after two decades I get that feeling every now and then.
A doctor once told me that nicotine is the most addictive substance you can buy without a prescription.
I'm not disputing that point.
According to the poll so far 42 of us have never tried it. That's encouraging. Actually, it is what I was hoping to see: more of us not even tryint it.
To the three members who indicated they are trying to quit now, you will do it. You can do it.
I have cursed the teen I was for starting in the first place. But am deeply grateful to the young adult me for standing up again and again to fight it and finally win.

I guess you could say I have tried it. I smoked one when I was about 10-years-old and another when I was in college.
When I was 10 -- My friend's parents were heavy smokers and he stole some cigarettes one day. I was afraid my parents would smell it on my breath.
When I was in college -- The cigarette companies would setup a stand on the public sidewalk and give away free sample packs.
Fortunately for me, all I got out of it was a really bad taste in my mouth.
I spent years breathing other people's smoke when smoking was still allowed at work. Now, I can smell the smoke if someone is smoking in the car in front of mine and their window is open.

I was surprised after quitting that I could smell even faint traces of smoke from someone fairly far away.
Glad to hear that it never hooked you. I can't imagine a company giving out samples especially on a campus.

To the four members who have indicated that they are trying to quit now:
Wishing you a nonstressful and happy Thanksgiving (if you are American and celebrate Thanksgiving)... if not
While I am enjoying a holiday feast with friends and family, my thoughts go out to you. Have a great week and weekend.

The numbers currently show that close to 78% of us either have never smoked or tried it for less than a week. I wonder how this would compare with a sample of non riders.
Of course I know it would vary so much according to country and age.. but still curious.
