Real ska, the Jamaican music from the 50s, or fake new-wave ska like Reel Big Fish?

The Skatalites is the only "original" ska band that comes to mind...I don't listen to it much honestly, I listen to reggae more, which evolved from ska in the first place, so it's similar.

The Planet Smashers! I think they're technically "new" ska, but they go less for punk influences, unlike LTJ or Big D (actually, Big D is on the same Stomp label that was started by Matt Collyer of the Planet Smashers). They're really, really good.
Bedouin Soundclash is pretty good, Edna's Goldfish if you can find them (they disbanded several years ago).

Ska is ska. it's not real or fake. It just happens to show up in waves. I think The Specials in the late 70's, early 80's were more influential to modern ska/punk bands than the pioneers like Desmond Dekker or the Skatalites.
There's a great interview with Bob Marley on youtube where he describes the differences between reggae, ska, and dancehall, and how they were all born out of calypso.
My favorite Ska influenced band is The Suicide Machines. Their first 2 albums, Destruction by Definition and Battle Hymns are spectacular. Also, if you haven't heard Operation Ivy, you need to get with it. They're re-releasing the digitally remastered Energy LP, so there's no excuse to not have it.

And by mentioning Op-Ivy, you made me realize I'd forgotten that and Rancid! DOH!

Ska is by far one of my favorite types of music.
My favorite ska band is Less Than Jake, which I haven't seen mentioned here yet...maybe I just missed it.
Make sure you check out Suburban Legends. Less known, very awesome.
Streetlight Manifesto, Reel Big Fish, Catch 22, and Aquabats are all solid.
I've seen most of these bands live, and Suburban Legends definitely put on the best show. Very energetic, and even some crazy stuff like throwing trombones across the stage.

Desmond Dekker, The Selecter, The Body Snatchers, The Paragons.
If you like those then I'll list more 1st wave ska.
The stuff you all are listening to isnt "fake," its 3rd wave ska.

Another great modern ska band is The Slackers. They have more of a Ska revival feel, but very soulful and fun.
Also in the pop field, Lily Allen has a cool taste of ska in her songs, and some attitude to boot. She's actually performed on stage with members of The Specials and recorded a nice cover of "Blank Expression".
Tim Armstrong's solo record, A Poet's Life, is fantastic. The Aggrolites play as his backup band for a lot of it.

not accessible from France alas!
I know only of the skatalites : their music is a perfect match for my flugelhorn ...But I will need simple but strong bass rythm for my brass band ( our bass saxhorns like simple and strong things)... any idea of something?

Ska shows are some of the funnest of all time too, I might add...I went to a Reel Big Fish show once and it was the best live concert I've ever been to.
And there used to be a local ska band here called the Skalds, they did a lot of ska covers of regular songs, like Pretty Fly for a White Guy and We Didn't Start the Fire...their concerts were hella fun!!
