View Full Version : Experiencing dizzy spells lately...

Weird, but lately I've been feeling dizzy after standing up and although it only lasts a short time, it's a little off-putting as its just recently started happening. I did a bit of research online and found out that it's fairly common, even if you're in shape, because the heart is pumping slower when you are in good cardio shape, as I am, and the heart naturally beats slower than the average person, which can cause momentary dizzienss upon standing up.

And of course, hypotension, or not enough blood in your system can also be the culprit. I've also noticed that in the last couple of days that after a good hard ride, I can really feel my heart beating through my shirt and it's sometimes a bit painful on every other beat! This is after my heart rate has dropped back down to normal, resting rate.

Also, it sites dehydration and/or lack of proper nutrition as possible causes as well. I tend not to eat breakfast but usually have a good lunch & dinner. Just wondering if anyone else has had dizzy spells.

this happens to me ALL the time. The worst is when i get out of the water after a hard swim set and i sit on the diving block. I get so dizzy that i cant walk for at least 5 minuets and once i fell off the block into the pool because i was so dizzy. Also every morning when i jump out of bed i get all dizzy and my vision goes all black for about 30 sec. i have a feeling that is bad

really? this has happened to me for as long as i have been swimming. I think it has to do with the fact that i have a really slow resting heart rate due to the fact that i am a year round distance swimmer. My heart rate right now is 51 bpm, but i have trouble getting it above 165 bpm.

I hope it's not too serious, maybe it's because you're not getting sleep or enough fibre or something like that. Maybe that's causing the dizzyness and blackouts.

That happens to me. My vision goes all black and it's not cool at all (it nearly always makes me fall to the floor for some reason and the last time it happened I hit my head on the counter top). But I asked my dad who's a pediatrician, and he said it's because "You're standing up too fast. *rambles on about sudden drop in blood pressure*". He went on to say to just stand up more slowly and everything will be dandy.

I get a dizzy/light-headed feeling quite alot, and i mean ALOT.
It is usually when i am stuck inside at work.
I like to think i am fairly healthy - ride 45km on my road bike quite often, uni LOTS, drink LOTS of water, eat VERY healthily, and walk alot.
After a swim i get this also, i think i would say its worse after a hard swim.
I didnt know more people got this as well.
I dunno if its something to worry about or not:confused:

I get it and so does Leo. Leo went to the doctors about it and he said it was just low blood pressure, which is a good thing, it means your not stressed. His advice was to not stand up so quickly!

I normally stand up and a few seconds later, I get really dizzy and my vision goes black or multi-coloured. Its weird but nothing to worry about.

Rock on!

I think i might agree with you there...
I used to be REAL stressed/depressed and cant remember feeling like it (the dizziness) - ever since goin on my night uni rides alot and uni'ing alot over the weekend i have been more chilled out but have had these feelings.
Although, just coz i dont remember it doesnt mean it didnt happen, i was quite f*cked up for a while there.

It could be vertigo. Its an inner ear problem that causes dizziness.
I was having major problems with dizziness, to the point where I would fall over, so i went to see a doctor and they said it was vertigo and that I should eventually go away.
I also get that thing where you stand up too fast, but I thought that was normal

I get this from time to time, and have had it since I was a kid. I heard it referred to as "postural hypertension" but I suspect it is hypotension.

I used to get it if I sat reading a book for a long time then stood up. It's simply that the heart gets used to pumping just enough blood round to keep your system going when you are resting, then you stand up and there isn't enough pressure to meet the extra demand.

If it is affecting your safety, it's a problem. Otherwise, it's normal. I suspect that the fitter you are, the more it would happen, because a fit person has a lower resting heart rate.

Yeah, postural hypotension.

I've had it off and on since I was a kid too.

However, MuniAddict, since it's not something that you've always had, it would be safer to get it checked out by a doctor.

(People often get thier hypos and thier hypers mixed up. I have often heard children being referred to as 'hypo' when the person means really active (hyperactive))

I get it several times a day, and it is always a few seconds after i stand up. I feel dizzy and have to lean on something and my vision slowly fades to white. One time a few years ago back in elementary school, when we were forced to sing in a stupid choir and practice all the time I got it really badly during one the practices and I acually fell over, everything just when all white and my eyes started burning, and the next thing i knew i was lying on the ground.

Yeah, it happens to me a lot when I stand up.

Wikipedia mentions that an elevated salt intake may be helpful...and I am intrigued because lately I haven't been taking in much salt.

It's a good thing (probably).

To explain it as simply as possible...

The better condition you are in, the slower your heart rate is. The slower your heart rate, the lower your blood pressure. When your blood pressure is too low, you experience that dizzy feeling (vision going black, faint) and may even pass out.

I know this because I have a heart condition and asked my cardiologist about it. Unicycling is a great workout. When people take it to the extreme, it becomes a ridiculously good cardio/abdominal/leg/arm/etc. workout.

So basically, what you want to do is increase your blood pressure. The best way to do that..is to drink lots of energy drinks before and during your rides. The sodium that is lacking in water is what will prevent the dizzy feeling. Also, salty foods...pretty much anything with salt in it.

The cardiologist has recorded a 44bpm resting heart rate for me. But I'm on a medication that slows my heart rate. Normally it'd be in the 50's.

Salt generally raises your blood pressure, so, yeah, I would agree that more salt in your diet can help.

I get it from time to time. I remember trying to stand up quickly once and coming to on the other end of a room. My wife says I somersaulted over a chair and landed sitting on my rear.

Young people don't always take care of their health like they should. Besides which, you say that this problem came on recently. If it were me, I'd go see a doctor. You don't seriously expect to get an accurate diagnosis over the Internet?

Well from what I've been reading on medical online sites and similar stuff here, it seems likely that the slower heartbeat is the most likely reason. Haven't been dizzy today though.:)

Go sit on the couch at rest for a good 5-10mins and check your pulse. Anything from 40-100 I'd say is normal. I bet you're in the 40's/50's.

I have only fainted once in my life. I was a kid and we were lined up in school to take a picture. Suddenly, my vision went fuzzy and the next thing I knew I was on the floor with people looking down at me asking if I was OK. Then I went outside and threw up. Come to think of it, that was around the time my family cut out salt because my father had high blood pressure.

I had an episode of vertigo once a few years ago, but it passed within a half hour.

My resting heart rate has always been around 80-85, even though as a kid I was not fit and now I am better, but not super active.

I think all you people with dizziness problems should eat some potato chips and not get up too fast and then report back so the rest of us don't worry about you!

lot of those, btw it is part of the problem with my bad freemounting of bigwheels: if I do it too quickly then I see a "black curtain" into my eyes (orthostatic problem).
it is a constant problem .... but on the other side my doctor is not worried by my tension :D
my resting heart rate is also in the 50- 60 range (once measured at 46).

Right. But a resting heartbeat in the 40's is not abnormal, therefore it is normal (but most commonly found in "...athletes"), right?Well actually it is "abnormal" if you use the literal definition:

abnormal: not normal; not typical or usual or regular or conforming to a norm

What I'm saying is that is obviously not *typical* (maybe that's a better word) for the average person to have a resting hb in the 40's.

This may be true for the average "person"....but what about the average unicyclist? That'd be an interesting study.

This may be true for the average "person"....but what about the average unicyclist? That'd be an interesting study.Well i would guess the "average" unicyclist would have a resting heartbeat similar to an "average" bicyclist; Now if we're talking *extreme*, as in doing hardcore MUni on a regular basis (I do 5-7 days per week) or spending many long hours in the course of a week doing difficult trials and/or street that gives you a really good cardio workout, then these ppl would very likely have significantly lower resting heartbeats. Go here to determine your "target heart rate": http://exercise.about.com/cs/fitnesstools/l/bl_THR.htm Remember to get benefit you must stay at your rate for at least 30 continuous minutes, and at least 3x per week.

Caffeine intake *does* void accurate readings, even up to 8 hours after drinking a coke for example, so to get the most reliable reading, you should not have it in your system when checking your resting hb. Mine's around 50-55 bpm. I do drink 40 oz of diet pepsi daily, which really is my only vice other than chocolate cake...mmmmmm!:p

Yeah, Terry it happens to me as well. Sometimes the effects are ignorable
sometimes are worse: I remember having a 15-minute nap and then quickly
standing up to answer a phone. After I stood up I felt so dizzy I had
to sit back again.
I hate it but I put the blame on low blood pressure which probably
all my family has.

I still get dizzy. Mine is due to low blood pressure (hypotension). Keep really well hydrated and take your vitamins if you don't eat right.

You sweat even when you're swimming, so have some water to drink at poolside once every dozen laps of so.

It's interesting. My resting pulse is around 54 bpm, but my blood pressure is often in the upper normal/lower hypertensive stage (between 125-140/78-88). But I do indulge in salt--I take Lava Salts during rides because I sweat a lot, and it's often on days I ride that I end up taking my blood pressure. When I was at the doctor last week, after almost a week of no exercise, my blood pressure was something like 117/75.

Back on topic ... I used to have the postural hypotension all the time through adolescence, but not so much as an adult. But I get vertigo almost once each winter (it can be viral), and it lays me out for a couple days--it's like having bedspins without ever getting drunk. Not fun. Hope yours clears up, Terry.
