Name your favorite songs from the 1970's!Before I answer, can you clarify what you are looking for?
Do you want me to post the (70's) songs that were my favorites DURING the 1970's? Or do you want me to post the songs that I like today that were from the 1970's? I may have different answers.
As an embarrassing example...
Then: Love Will Keep Us Together, by the Captain and Tennille*
Now: Thick as a Brick (especially any live version performed in the 70's), by Jethro Tull
* - what can I say? I was ten. I liked the synthesizers.

Do you want me to post the (70's) songs that were my favorites DURING the 1970's? Or do you want me to post the songs that I like today that were from the 1970's? I may have different answers.
Exactly the question I had in mind.
In the 70s, I was crazy about 1950s rock and roll. The contemporary stuff I liked included
"Crazy Little Thing Called Love" (Queen)
"Rockabilly Rebel" (Matchbox)
"Ramalamadingdong" (Rocky Sharpe and the Replays)
I did buy Ace of Spades when it was in the charts!
(And "Coward of the County" by kenny Rogers, but let's draw a veil over that!)
I also liked Status Quo and the Rolling Stones.
Now as a 40 something, I have The Sex Pistols, Sham 69, Buzzcocks, Ruts, Skids, Slaughter and the Dogs, the Rezillos, Rush, The Exploited, and Angelic Upstarts in my 1970s collection. It's a mid life crisis thing. (Don't ask why Rush is in there?)
If I chose one record that I liked then that I still like now, it would be "Ever Fallen in Love With Someone You Shouldn't Have Fallen in Love With?" by Buzzcocks. The perfect power pop single.

Don't ask why Rush is in thereI know you said not to... and it's a little off-topic, but...
Why is Rush in there? Why are we even asking that question?
Rush has been my all-time favorite band since I discovered them in 1980. Their music and the poetry of their lyrics have been stirring my soul for the last 27 years. There are other bands that I like a lot, but Rush, to me, stands in a category by themselves. Their music is like an old friend. It's similar to how a best friend is in a different category from all of your other friends. They are the person who answers the question "Who is it?" with "It's me." They are the person who is always welcome at your house. They are the person who doesn't always have to say "thank you" because you know how they feel.

Because if you look at the whole list (The Sex Pistols, Sham 69, Buzzcocks, Ruts, Skids, Slaughter and the Dogs, the Rezillos, Rush, The Exploited, and Angelic Upstarts ) 9 of the 10 are what I would loosely categorise as "punk". Say what you like about Rush, they could not be loosely categorised as punk.:)
Possibly you wouldn't recognise all the names (although "Slaughter and the Dogs" doesn't sound awfully like the name of a string quartet!) and you wouldn't have spotted that. It was a throwaway remark. I've nothing against Rush. There's a place for pretentious overblown twaddle in every good music collection.;)

Possibly you wouldn't recognise all the names (although "Slaughter and the Dogs" doesn't sound awfully like the name of a string quartet!)The music of Mannheim Steamroller does not sound anything like their name suggests, so I make no assumptions. I didn't recognize any of those names.
It was a throwaway remark. I've nothing against Rush. There's a place for pretentious overblown twaddle in every good music collection.;)Another throwaway remark? If you want pretentious and arrogant, listen to Tangerine Dream. Last time I went to their concert, they basically ignored the audience the whole time. The members of Rush, as far as I can tell, are down-to-earth people. I'm not sure what twaddle means, but it can't be good. :) Needless to say, I disagree!
Not sure when it was released, but I'll add...
"Blinded by the Light", by Manfred Mann's Earth Band

Oh, well, '68 is close enough right?
In A Gadda Da Vida is a good song, and a couple others are okay...You probably already knew this, but the *original* title and words to that song were: "In the Garden of Eden, baby!" I like the way it is better...we've just come to know it as, and got used the way it is.:D
Iron Butterfly (http://www.amiright.com/artists/ironbutterfly.shtml)'s, "In-A-Godda-Da-Vida"
Misheard Lyrics:
In the garden of eden
Original Lyrics:
In a godda da vida
According to the articles I've seen on this song, "In The Garden Of Eden" was the original title of the song, but the singer was too drunk/high/whatever to sing it properly, so it came out "In-a-Godda-Da-Vida." It might also explain why the song is like 15 minutes long.
VH-1's Pop Up Videos features Doug Ingle stating that he couldn't sing the song, but it wasn't influenced by drugs or anything else and that the title is Latin for Garden of Eden. I have a hard time believing that though because in latin Garden is "hortus" and Eden is "paradisus".
The Simpsons also did it up as a church hymn with the lyrics "In the Garden of Eden". Bart slips it into the church service as a hymnal, it sounds excellent with an organ by the way. It is available on the Simpsons Songs In The Key Of Springfield CD (http://www.cdnow.com/switch/from=sr-20029/target=buyweb_purchase/ddcn=SD-8122+72723+2).
