View Full Version : Are the forums slow?

Lately I've noticed that the forums are very slow to load at times.

I've seen occasions before where pages take minutes to load, but during the past week it seems to be happening fairly regularly. In the process of posting this thread it took about a minute for the front page to load, another minute for the "Requests, Questions and Bugs on this site" and an additional minute for this "Post New Thread".

...and that's after posting a reply in another thread just now, where it really was like treacle. The first attempt at replying timed out after about five minutes, the second attempt was about two minutes before the "Thanks for posting" intermission page, then a further three minutes before the thread reappeared.

After that I discovered that my first attempt was successful despite my web browser telling me otherwise. I've just attempted to delete the duplicate post; five minutes later I'm still waiting for that to complete, where I expect it will nag me for spilling over the edit time limit. It wasn't my fault...

I'm aware of the problem, but haven't solved it. The issue is that the memory gets consumed and then we get lots of swapping from fast memory to slow hard drives, and that destroys it.

Gilby,
Would it be possible to have some kind of 'rule' in place that posts a certain age are deleted/filed 'away'?
I know this would get rid of some useful info but i'm sure alot of the ancient stuff gets bought up over and over again anyway.
I know this suggestion will bring alot of negative comments my way, but it was just a thought.
Peace,
J

I have a super fast computer/internet, but ive had it where it takes over 400 seconds to load, instead of in the blink of an eye.

I know everyone should just stop posting.

Problem solved.

Problem solved.
I think people will object to that

A further development: twice this evening I've been suddenly shut out of the forums by the message...

"The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later."

...is this a so-called "fix" to the above fault?

I turned that feature on to possibly prevent a continuous overload of the system if it reaches a really high load. The server should never reach that load though when behaving correctly. I also changed some other things on the server, and banned a search engine bot, and since these changes, I have not seen the server get overloaded like it did before.

I'm thinking the best fix would be for everyone to hit the donate button....
