View Full Version : You know you're a nerd when...

Do you ever think something, and then immediately realize "Holy crap, I'm a huge nerd"? That happened to me at dinner today. My stepmom had the radio on, and This Kiss by Faith Hill came on. Here's part of the chorus:

It’s the way you love me
It’s a feeling like this
It’s centrifical motion
It’s perpetual bliss

That bugged me. Probably much more than it should have.

Anyway, I'm sure there a lot more nerds on these forums. If nothing else, you're smart because you unicycle. Does anyone else have these moments?

well im not necessarily a nerd, and there is no way i can prove it to you, so believe what you want, but i have had these moments, and i dont think of them as "nerdy moments".. one of my moments was when i was in a public restroom with my friend outside, and while i was takin a whizz, i was singing james brown:

"i feeeeeel goood - *na na na na na na na* i knew that i would - *na na na na na na na* i feeeeel niiiice! - like sugar and spiiiiice. etc."

yea, weird, strange, embarrasing, akward, call it what you want, but i have a lot of dignity to lose, so why not lose some every once in a while?

All the time. As a matter of fact, the first time I heard the chorus of that song I noticed the exact same thing.

Oh yes. I was at Burger King the other day when the boyfriend points to one of the paintings on the wall that was a parody of Da Vinci's Man (http://www.latifm.com/artists/image/da-vinci-leonardo-proportions-of-the-human-figure.jpg) where there was a burger in place of a guy. He thought that was pretty funny.

Then I pointed to the rest of the paintings around the restaurant and named the different artists they were parodying (Van Gogh, Monet, Warhol, etc). Nerdy moment of the day.

Well there's no real set-in-stone definition for a nerd or a geek, but the generally accepted connotations are that nerds are smart, science-y people and geeks are smart, tech-y people. Both are usually fairly smart in the average stereotype, though.

I have that sort of moment all of the time but I don't think it makes me a nerd / geek or whatever. It's just general knowledge and there's no shame in it. Nerds know the script of Monty Python sketches and stuff.

My friend and I had a two hour conversation in a pub on the subject of whether it made more sense for Spiderman to have organic web that shot out from his wrists (movie version) or man-made synthetic web capsules strapped to his wrists (comic-book version).

Nothing nerdy in that. It's pub talk. I've talked some real rubbish in pubs such as the great Quality Street vs. Roses debate.

Organic web makes more sense. "He can do anything that a spider can". Like spin a web. Hand made webs are more Batman's style.

Nerd is an intelligent person who often doesn't fit social norms simply because they do not care.

Why do nerds have tape on their glasses? Because they were broken.

Geeks are the obsessive fanboy types. They are often associated with some section of fandom, such as star wars, star trek, lord the rings, comic books.

You can be a nerd and a geek, but they are different things.

dudewithasock
2007-07-02, 09:32 PM
I'm a nerd and a geek, then...but I don't wear glasses.

I just thought of another one, though it's more for geek.

You know you're a geek when you can watch a monty python skit you've never even seen before, and still be able to name the actors that are in it, despite the crazy costumes.

Really? I made it as a smart quip to a genetic engineer that I ran into at the hardware store who was using Cu pipes for anaerobic supply lines.

I'd like to hear the real joke; if you remember it please do tell. If you made that up, you came up with a very nerdy scenario. :)

Then I pointed to the rest of the paintings around the restaurant and named the different artists they were parodying (Van Gogh, Monet, Warhol, etc).Sorry, knowledge of classical art does not make you a nerd either (though having the originals in your Burger King might).

Neither of these, of course, means you aren't nerds in other ways... :)

"xkcd is not an acronym, and Munroe attaches no meaning to the name, except in a joking manner within the comic. He claims that the name was originally a screen name, which he selected as a combination of letters that would be meaningless, as well as phonetically unpronounceable."
