Unbelievable. According to this article (http://www.slate.com/id/2167292?GT1=10034), wine has taken over beer over here.
I don't know if it holds here in the Pacific Northwest where Micro-Brews abount but this is disturbing.
I think the first place to start is to re-train every server that, when one askes what beers they serve, not to lead of with: "Bud, Bud-Light". Start with the real beers for goodness sake.
Of course this applies only to those of legal drinking age and/or those under proper parental supervision.
Does proper parental supervision encompass a drunk dad passed out under the table and a sobbing mom in the corner?

Oh it's not like bars are going to stop stocking beer through lack of demand, so what's the problem? Personally I've never seen the attraction, in my experience if it looks like p*** it probably tastes like it too (the exception being cider).

The only beer I ever had was some cheap kind, I don't remember what, but it was nasty...and I don't like wine either.

But seriously, drinking provides a moderate amount of fun with no side effects for hundreds of millions of people. Of course in some cases things go bad, alcholism is terrible, but isn't that the case with everything? If i was worried about my health, or looking stupid in public, I'd give up unicycling.

Wine vs. beer? Why not wine and beer?! Both can be good.

They need to get to break out of the bar and sports segment and get some more beer connoisseurs (hello JC) started if they want to compete with wine.
And on a sidenote, beer can compete with wine, but NOT with e.g.
Coffee (http://www.mikkeller.dk/Ollet_Geek_GB.html)
Gatorade (http://www.budextra.com/)
Water (http://www.budlight.com/)
Champagne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gueuze)
etc.
There's a point when the innovative stops and the plagiarism starts.

In other news:
ORT COLLINS, Colo. -- A truck driver was buried by grain Wednesday morning after he fell into a pile of malted barley being delivered to New Belgium Brewing in Fort Collins, Poudre fire officials said.
Several witnesses rushed to pull the driver out of the malted barley after he became immersed, New Belgium spokesman Bryan Simpson told officials. Witnesses continued to dump the grain until they were able to see the driver's arm, Simpson said.
The driver was eventually pulled through the chute of the truck but was not breathing, so workers began performing CPR.
Fire officials continued CPR and immediately took the man to Poudre Valley Hospital.
His condition was unknown Wednesday night.
Fire officials said the type of truck being used was commonly used to haul grain-type products and can weigh more 50,000 pounds when fully loaded. Officials said they believe most of the grain had been unloaded by the time the driver fell in.

That would be 'health.' And the answer is, yes. Drinking in moderation (such a vague term, eh?) does have known health benifits. I'll let you all do your own google searches but there have been plenty of studies that show reduced incidence of heart attacks, lowered blood pressure and lower cholestorol in people who have one to two drinks of beer or wine daily. There was a recent and well publicized study that concluded that red wine was the best thing to drink for good health. The study was prompted by someone noticing the statistically low incidence of heart attacks in french people (though I've heard that's on the increase, most likely due to the expansion of McDonalds franchises everywhere).
Back to the original subject; I don't get the whole wine thing myself. I love GOOD beer. I'm partial to IPAs and Porters. The best use for a bottle of Bud might be as a projectile to hurl at the neighbor's cat. I think the reason wine has overtaken beer sales is because it's become so 'trendy.' There are people out there who can't tell a good wine from a bad vinegar who've become self-appointed wine snobs.

where i live wine (goon) is cheaper than beer by a long shot.
It is not un-common to see winecasks at parties, with people drinking straight from the squirty bit :)
But give me a beer anyday, it reminds me of vegemite.

Being a loyal Northwesterner I'm a microbrew drinking. But the Northwest is also wine country with local wineries. What to choose?
I like good beer in moderation. Good beer also goes well with pub food. Wine is out of place with fish and chips or a burger. And I'd much rather go to a pub than a fancy bistro for food and wine.
Cheap beer is bad though. If a beer tastes like skunk when warm then it isn't a good beer. Don't drink bad beer.

I like good beer, especially micro-brews and special batches.
HOWEVER! I like to drink a (1) cheaper, weaker beer after hard exertion. I find it more like bubbly bread water, and more quenching than a thick, rich micro-brew.

I should hope you don't have too much experience in the field...
I'm a beer snob. If it's not good beer, I do my best to avoid it. Microbrews are by far my favorite. Some favorites (if I had to choose): Gritty's Scottish Ale (http://www.grittys.com/sa.php), Carrabassett Pale Ale (http://www.cascobaybrewing.com/Beers/carra_beers.html), Shipyard (http://www.shipyard.com/taste/), anything Magic Hat (http://www.magichat.net/)...
Gritty's is advertising their Vacationland Summer Ale with this ad (http://grittys.com/beta/summah.mp3). Check it out. It'd be even more funny if you've been to Maine, the way life should be.
Disclaimer: Of course, this is all hypothetical since I'm not of age yet.

I've only had American beer, but I really don't like it at all. Wine is delicious, though, even the box stuff that my mom gets. Blackberry merlot...mmmmmm.
Of course, just give me some Bailey's at Christmas and I'm a happy camper.

I must admit though, I have been drinking more red wine lately, but not more wine than beer.

The sad part about the article is that it talks about beer only in the sense of the mass produced pilsners like Miller and Bud. They don't even mention the microbreweries. The only mention of good beer is in the sidebar comment:
In 2006, the Gallup results flipped; Americans again claimed a preference for beer over wine. Still, while wine consumption has grown steadily in this country, beer consumption has remained flat. (The one exception to this trend is craft beers, which have enjoyed double-digit sales growth in the last few years. But craft beers command less than 5 percent of the domestic beer market. Anheuser-Busch alone, by comparison, controls about 50 percent of it.)
Microbreweries aren't going to compete with wine on volume. But it would be interesting to see growth rate of craft beers compared to the growth rate of wine by year. The craft beer industry is probably doing better than the wine industry by that measure.

I prefer beer. The type is not important, only that it is cold and plentiful. The best way to drink wine is right outta the bag.

The trouble (for me) of both beer and wine is that they are both absoultely brimming with calories.

Not only that, but consuming alchohol slows one's metabolism so all other consumed calories are processed more slowly.

I think it's such a personal choice what kinda drink you like (wine vs beer, beer vs beer and wine vs wine), nobody can say whats the best because of this.
But, to follow that point, Corona out of the bottle is the nicest beer haha. I love it in clubs when they stick the wedge of lime in the top and everybody's to drunk to realise why they can't get any beer out of the bottle haha. Good times, good times.
Of course, just give me some Bailey's at Christmas and I'm a happy camper.
Ewwww, haha. I hated that, so thick. I had to down a lot of that on new years and was almost sick (because of the way it's so thick, not the alcomahol).
From a young age I wanted to drink beer like my Dad, but when I got to the age when he offered me some, I didn't want it. I can't really explain why. Recently I have really enjoyed drinking, I feel like I'm 'old enough' now (I guess) and I love going out, meeting new people whilst drinking.
I can really rant when I want eh?
Well, I think Dave (kington99) hits the nail on the head with opinions like mine. We need to go for a ride though sometime Dave, I'm meeting rich in a few weeks in soton, you should come down.
