LONDON (AFP) - A pair of gay flamingos have adopted an abandoned chick, becoming parents after being together for six years, a British conservation organisation said Monday.

Carlos and Fernando had been desperate to start a family, even chasing other flamingos from their nests to take over their eggs at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) in Slimbridge near Bristol.

But their egg-sitting prowess made them the top choice for taking an unhatched egg under their wings when one of the Greater Flamingo nests was abandoned.

The couple, together for six years, can feed chicks by producing milk in their throats.

"Fernando and Carlos are a same sex couple who have been known to steal other flamingos' eggs by chasing them off their nest because they wanted to rear them themselves," said WWT spokeswoman Jane Waghorn.

"They were rather good at sitting on eggs and hatching them so last week, when a nest was abandoned, it seemed like a good idea to make them surrogate parents."

Gay flamingos are not uncommon, she added.

"If there aren't enough females or they don't hit it off with them, they will pair off with other males," she said.

What does a flamingo need with a rainbow? I think their coloring is sufficient for "gayness." If ever an animal were to look "gayish," a flamingo would seem to fit the bill.

I always wanted to put one of those plastic lawn flamingos roosting on a tree limb in my yard. But our current trees aren't set up for the bird to show up through the leaves...

Though they aren't in the yard, everyone who's been to my house has seen my flamingo bathroom. It all stems from a time when unicycles were named for cute animals. One member of my unicycle club collected giraffes, while another collected penguins (an old brand of unicycle). They were girls, but to counter their oddness I decided to collect flamingos to go with the Miyatas I rode. They go good in a bathroom...

Clearly these gay flamingos are a detriment to the flamingo society. They are harassing the breeders and driving them away from their eggs and nest. That is not good for the future of flamingo society. The flamingo society would be much stronger as a whole if there were no gay flamingos. If all goes according to Darwin the gayness should disappear since it is not helpful to the future of the breeding. If it doesn't the flamingos will go extinct before their time.

Therefor this story does not support gayness in flamingo society. It is an anti-gay article and I'm sure mscalisi knew that when he posted it.

I do hope people can see the sarcasm in this post even if they can't see this disclaimer

It really gets to me sometimes. Strange thing is, I can count on one-half the fingers of one hand how many times in real life I've dealt with someone giving me shit about being gay (and in my case, everyone knows.) But on the internet, dealing with people who've never met me and might not be aware that any of their friends or relatives are gay, all I have to do is read a thread with gay in the title and there's someone throwing stones.

So, I went to the salt lake today. Not many flamingos, but I've found a couple. They seemed to try to communicate some message to me as I got close to them, so I thought they were coming on to me and so were gay. I couldn't really tell their gender, but the colour of their feathers and the way they behaved themselves suggested flamboyancy. So, of course I took out the stick I always carry with me for the odd encounter with a gay flamingo couple and started attacking them. They tried to run away, but I was too fast for them and managed to lay down quite a few good ones. They kept squeaking and flapping their wings, but I took that as a sign that I'm doing my job properly. That'll teach them a sense decency, hopefully.

Having to resort to violence saddens me greatly, but I have no choice in this matter. When I see two gay flamingos going about their immoral business I just have to make a point of it. Why don't they understand that they're wrong? I'm right!

Gay-bashing reminds me of the Lavender Panthers, a gay rights activist group started in San Francisco during the early 1970s, led by the Reverend Ray Broshears.

They were ultimately nation wide, patrolling gay neighborhoods, and surprising gay-bashers when the police were not sympathetic/protective.

Should every high school student have to take a multicultural history class, with a gay week for the Stonewall riots and Lavender Panthers, consensual sodomy laws, the history of marriage discrimination (inter racial marriage was outlawed), etc.

Or how about making a L-Panther movie, starring some macho marshall artists, patrolling the streets and catching gay bashers! and an old wise teacher who calls the marshall artists "Grasshopper."

The audience would LOVE it!!
