Side mount help

I am expanding my unicycle repetoire by working on some mounts. I can now do a
reverse mount some of the time, but I can not yet do a side mount. By the time I
get up the pedals are vertical and I can't go anywhere. Is there a trick to
either getting the pedals in a better position or getting enough leverage to
move them?
