View Full Version : Broken jeep.

I tried to go to class yesterday, my first day of class for the semester, and I noticed my clutch was feeling a little funny. About 100 feet after I noticed the strange feeling, POP! and the clutch pedal sunk in and had no feedback on it. My clutch was completely engaged, and I couldn't disengage it.

My 3rd gear was also stripped at the time, so I had it towed into a mechanic and told him to fix the issues. After he looked into it, he gave me a call back and told me,
"Normally with this kind of damage, I would junk the vehicle, but because you have so much money in after-market parts, your best option is to repair it."

UGH! That's almost the most frustrating thing you can hear from a mechanic. I guess I have to look forward to spending maybe $3,000 to get it fixed, I'm not looking forward to this...

And now for your viewing pleasure (someone might recognize it from ILL):

DUDE... first off, sick ride. second, fix it yourself!!! Sounds like it's clutch and transmission. Being a jeep, now is a great chance to upgrade!

I would do it myself but I hardly have the time to do it. I would also have to remove the transmission, which is not necessarily the easiest thing to do with my resources. Looks like I've found a cheaper person to bring it to as well, so I might end up doing that.

Did you do all the mods to the jeep yourself?

Yeah, when I was in high school and didn't have a job.

Not trying to rain on your parade or anything... but on the show Top Gear, Jeep Wranglers were noted as being the "gayest" vehicle on some website they found to make fun of Jeremy's Mercedes.

Haha, that's really funny. You do however have to separate stock jeeps from modified jeeps, though, because stock jeeps have almost no style. Also, I've lost count to how many girls thought I was hot because I was driving my jeep, and I've recieved a few phone numbers from girls who I was driving next to. I usually get comments that I'm gay because I ride a unicycle, compared the the countless compliments I get because I drive a jeep.

that is an awesome jeep, that sucks about having to fix it. How much of a lift do you have on it?

Blegas78
2007-01-19, 03:37 AM
It has a 4-inch suspension lift and the tires are 35x12.50, so the body is roughly 6.5" higher than stock.

My mechanic said that the cost to fix it would be $3,200, so I'm looking into other options. To put that in unicycling perspective, that's 6.9 2007 KH 20" unis. And I thought that my first unicycle getting stolen was a major set back.

Very nice lookin' Jeep. Quite a bit newer than ours and more modified as well. Love the rock-climbing photos!

As for the fixing, you might want to throw your symptoms and problems out on jeepforum.com. Lot's of good folks there. I also use our local club, jeepalliance.org to seek answers. Jeep Wranglers are perpetual machines. If something breaks, it can be replaced far more simply than other vehicles...that is, if one has the proper resources.

Hope it works out for your best.

OutUK is not the only site that agrees that the Jeep Wranger is a boy magnet. Car Talk (http://www.cartalk.com/content/features/Gay-Lesbian/gay-guy2.html) does too. The lesbians also like the Wranger, ranking #3 on the gay chick car list (http://www.cartalk.com/content/features/Gay-Lesbian/gay-chick2.html).

But what's really gay is that I can't view OutUK (http://www.outuk.com) from the US. It looks like I'd have to use a UK proxy to be able to view the site. What's up with that?

I'm off to clear my browser history, cache, and cookies. Too much LGBT googling.

John, with all the computer technical articles you have done, you have disappointed me. Go to outuk.co.uk ;)

Buy a hybrid. Help save our environment. And try to avoid making too much smug...(South Park anyone?)

I will try to save the environment by fixing my 18 mpg jeep, so I don't have to drive my dad's 8 mpg excursion. Untill they come out with a good off-roading hybrid, then there's no reason for me to switch to one.

That's totally transgendered. OutUK.co.uk just redirects to OutUK.com. But going to OutUK.com just takes you to a junk page. OutUK.co.uk doesn't even exist in Google (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all&q=site%3Aoutuk.co.uk&btnG=Search). It's a big circle jerk.

I finally found the page from OutUK with the Top 10 Gayest Cars. I'd link to it but that would be useless because it's an OutUK.com domain and you can't get there from here.

Anyways the list is
1. Smart
2. Jeep Wrangler
3. Pink Rolls-Royce
4. Mercedes SL55 AMG
5. New Mini
6. BMW Z8
7. Porsche convertible
8. Classic Chevy
9. New Skoda
10.New Beetle

haha, seriously, I can't believe I typed that!

Looks as if I'm going to take it to another place that specializes in transmissions. I would love to upgrade it to an NV4500, but the total conversion is about $3,300 plus anoth 250 for the clutch. So either I'll spend $1500 for mine to get rebuilt or $3,570 for an indestructable upgrade.

I made a u-turn and the wheel bolts all sheared in half. I came to a stop and noticed my tire rolling ahead of me, it was quite a comical experience actually.

I have to get new bolts, the body is bent a little and the tire tore my fender flare in half.

I think your wheels/tires are a little bigger than your Jeep was designed for...

My brother-in-law has a red Jeep similar to yours. His also spends most of its time sitting in his driveway, waiting to be fixed. I guess it's like old MGs or Harleys; the time they spend running is worth all their high maintenance?

I was never crazy about having to fix broken unicycles all the time. I'm very happy now that I can buy one that, for the most part, won't break.

They definitely aren't meant for it; I plan to get beefier axles when I finish school.

My jeep is a little more maintenance then a typical car, but not much more. Also, if doing that stuff is a hobby, then I certainly don't mind doing the little bit of maintenance required.

I hope you have another vehicle to drive in the meantime. Was it the axle bolt that sheered off or the lug bolts? If it's just the axle bolt, it shouldn't be too hard to get a new/used axle from a scrap yard. I recently did a bit of work to one of my Jeeps with a new front axle, coils and shocks. With stock replacements, it's looking real nice with what looks like about a 2" lift...

Hope it goes back together well and remember, "it's always something..."
