View Full Version : Shaving Your Armpits
So, eh, do you shave your armpits?
I shaved mine yesterday and it feels awesome. Nice and prickly. They also smell good for a change. From now on I'm an official armpit-shaver.
How about you?

One can not assume every girl has her armpits and legs shaven. Esp. in California... it's a crapshoot here!
I dated a girl once that was a real "free spirit"... she was as natural as could be. That wasn't so bad. What was bad was the fact that she left the bathroom door open when she, um, dropped the kids off at the pool. Major turnoff.

I hate shaving my face, but I do because I hate having a beard even more. I would never have any reason to shave my pits. Yuck, and ouch.

Not "obv"...
My (extremely hot) wife rarely shaves her pits and even more rarely her legs. She only shaves for a fancy event with a sleeveless gown, and occaisionally during bathing suit season.

Semi-hot.

I have shaved every other bodypart, or waxed (except for arms). Do not recommend it, never succumb to a girl when she says; he lets wax some hair off. JUST SAY NO!~

To each his own, for some men, a little hair makes a women even hotter. It takes a confident woman to leave the pits au natural, and THAT is sexy.

NOT true. Well, perhaps in some cases, but when I've seen in it's the lack of confidence that makes the girl think "hmm, there is no point in making an effort". People that know me will know exactly the girl I am talking about haha Dustin, sorry for bringing her up again! Yeah, this one girl was just lazy and didnt look after herself, she has hairy armpits, hairy legs, and dear god, do not EVER go swimming with her! . Yeah, that was bad. Though on prom night, she did take a little care of herself and shaved under her arms, so it's not like she just didn't want to, it was just lazyness. i dont even know if this post makes sense, im just rambling on and on and on.
imo girls should shave underarms. or if they dont, then they shouldnt ever wear short sleeved tshirts. thats just my opinion mind, so dont bite me.

Why should I shave my arm pits? Life is too short.
Anyway, who decided that women should shave thier arm pits and legs? However, I can't summon enough resistence to society's expectations not to shave my legs in the summer (ie I do shave my legs in the summer).

I started shaving my armpits because deodorant tends to be hard to wash out of armpit hair, depending on the brand and type. I also noticed I don't smell bad when I don't shower for two days or so and am active at the same time.

I don't get itches at all. Except when I first shave them and I maybe get a small nick... then it's only for like an hour, and it's not itchy anymore.

Cathwood i have always wondered that. why do women have to shave arm pits/leg etc to fit in? why do men have to wear trousers or shorts instead of a skirt? Why are long fingernails considered feminine, when in the first place they are really a humans only means of defending itself if attack whilst unarmed and from what i have read and seen, are under the same catagory as claws/talons etc? ripping shit up with your finernails is not feminine, taking a chunk out of the nieghbours dog with your pointy pinky sounds pretty blokey to me! yet why is doing that blokey anyway? why cannot a nice lady enjoy taking chunks out of the neighbours dog? or the children? hek we should all have a get together and bring eachothers neighbours dog and take chunks out.
or you could barricade up your neighbours neighbours dog in a small cage under the stairs and chunk it at your own descretion.
Note: no neighbours where pissed off in the making of this post.

To all you young guys (e.g. Chexjc), if you find a good woman whom you love, and you dump her for having hairy pits, you'll regret it for the rest of your lives. Real qualities matter, and hairy armpits do not.

i haven't made the jump to shaving my pits yet. i shave most my face, the little halo of really long hairs i get around my nipples (only chest hair i grow, it's gross), and trim around my junk. as someone else mentinoed it makes unicycling better, or at least less painful. and it doesn't itch after the first few times. thought about the pits before though...someday maybe.

If I was a girl I wouldn't shave everyday, no way. I would just wear trousers (eeeww) more and long tops more often.

BTW I have some Scottish ancestry, so I could wear a kilt... if I wanted to... and no I haven't. (yet?)Why do we even have armpit hair?I've heard the reason we have hair there and in... errr... some other places, is because without it skin would rub against skin, which isn't nice when it's sweaty and thus sticks together. I don't shave my pits, but I do enjoy my silky smooth legs. Sure, it's a bit of a hassle, and it itches sometimes, but they are sooo nice and smooth. As for the male skirt question, I think skirts are much more comfortable then trousers, I just don't wear them in public yet, thats all.

I think that might be some kind of disorder.
I usually shave a little patch on my leg after sharpening knives. When they shave, they are sharp enough :)

I lost some hair somewhere between my armpits and my legs due to a cigarette lighter. It is not a safe, sane or sober way of removing hair.

Years ago when I wore a sling for a couple months due to a broken collar bone, I developed a hairy patch just below my elbow where most of my arm's weight centered and rubbed on the sling. It was pretty strange. Most of the hairs on my arms are pretty thin, but the hairy patch was thick and gnarly. It eventually went away though. I thought it was cool, but my wife hated it. :D

Did you ever get a rash because the skin there is so tender?
I've been shaving my chest occasionally. I hope that it makes it grow back thicker. Anybody else do this?

idk i am not a armpit shaver but I think that women should and men should trim if it like sticks out when your arms are down. Just a trim but not so short that it would ever start to itch. That would be murder.

I don't do shaving except on my face, and even then it's only every few days.
A friend (of sorts) that is doing a beautician course asked me to be a guinea pig for her waxing techniques.
I'm a guy who likes to be helpful, but it turns out I have limits. Some places are just meant to stay hairy.

Trim? Maybe. Shave? Probably never. Underarm hair is sexy.

Very weird thread
So, to add some odd value to this odd discussion: Why don't you buy a laser and get rid of that hair in your armpits forever. That also prevents itching (I have been told).
Hmm... am I still reading the right forum? Armpits? Unicycles? What comes next????? http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/smilie/konfus/k045.gif

It's probably really expensive, and knowing the quality of Cyprus medicine they'd probably end up drilling a hole through my foot with that laser. In the best-case scenario. Plus, it's probably really expensive.
And I don't get any itching at all. I only got once, for about a day, after shaving for the first time.

Guys are sexy with shaved armpits. Seriously, armpit hair is ugly... Some guys with long hair kinda look good with it but not many...

I saw a documentary several years ago (so don't ask for references) that said the following --
- armpit hair is designed to hold sweat
- a hairy armpit can hold 30 times the sweat of a hairless armpit
- the bacteria living on the skin feast on the sweat and that's what produces body odor
- primitive man (and woman) found this attractive
I'll add my own items to that list --
- armpit hair is gross
- armpit hair is gross
Don't have an underarm version of ZZ Top. Shave or trim. Itching will not be a problem. Not only does it look nicer, but it's a safer hygene solution than deodorants and antiperspirants which contain harmful ingredients such as aluminum.

I just read this thread for the first time.
Why do we even have armpit hair?Dave pretty much answered this, but didn't mention that the evaporation of all that sweat on the armpit hair brings COOLING; it's all about temperature control!I saw a documentary several years ago (so don't ask for references) that said the following --
- armpit hair is designed to hold sweat
- a hairy armpit can hold 30 times the sweat of a hairless armpit
- the bacteria living on the skin feast on the sweat and that's what produces body odor
- primitive man (and woman) found this attractiveIf you shave, you're at risk of overheating!
So why do we have armpit hair but no kneepit hair? The same reason you don't have elbowpit hair. The knee is the equivelent of the elbow, the equivelent of the armpit is the crotch, there's hair there too!
For the record I shave only my face. I shaved my legs once as part of a group bicycling ritual when we rode the 200 mile STP in one day. Didn't like it much and put me at risk of ridicule of my non-cycling friends and relatives...
If you can trust statistics, approximately 3 out of 20 people are ready to kill you for shaving or helping someone shave your or their armpits.
I better watch out.

I don't grow much hair under my arms, so I usually don't bother. Same goes for my legs and elsewhere.
If I'm bored sometimes I'll shave. But I rarely ever get that bored.

I'm not sure that's correct. If I'm physically active on a very hot day, I can get the back of a cotton shirt drenched with sweat. Once you reach that saturation point, the evaporative process is insignificant compared to the insulating effect of the layer of sweat. On the other hand, an Under Armour shirt keeps you dry and cool because it aids the evaporation process, preventing a build-up of sweat. I think the effect is similar for armpits: having an armpit saturated with sweat is not necessarily cooling. After a point, all that unnecessary sweat traps the heat. Lastly, keep in mind that I don't know if any of this is true. It's really all about not looking and smelling gross.

I'm not sure that's correct...I was told or taught at one time the reason was to aid evaporation, which would result in cooling. A quick Google finds support of this: “Hair is used to help evaporate perspiration. As perspiration evaporates it takes away heat and helps keep the area cool.” And “Armpit hair may retain the sweat where its evaporation will cool the body.”. Now how much critical cooling actually takes place is up for debate, if you use an antiperspirant you get no sweat from the pits; you don't see people falling over from heat exhaustion just because they use antiperspirant!
I also found this:
“Humans have two types of sweat glands. 'Eccrine glands' are found all over the body and produce a slightly acidic watery fluid. When this sweat evaporates from the skin it cools the body down. Humans rely on this sweat to control body temperature. It has no odour of its own, but does start to smell when bacteria on the skin's surface begin to digest it.
An altogether stinkier kind of sweat is produced by the 'apocrine glands'. These glands only start working at puberty. They secrete a thick, waxy, greyish substance which is diluted by fluid from other glands nearby. Although it has no odour itself, when bacteria start decomposing it, it releases a strong distinct smell - BO.
Apocrine glands are only found in the armpits, belly button area, ears, groin and nipples. The sweat they produce has no role in temperature regulation. It is released in response to stress, emotion and sexual excitement.
Apocrine glands are related to the scent glands of animals. In other primates, the scent produced by such glands is thought to act as an erotic attractant. How the odour of rotting apocrine sweat might be used by humans is still a mystery which is being investigated.”
This is consistent with your quotes:
- the bacteria living on the skin feast on the sweat and that's what produces body odor
- primitive man (and woman) found this attractive
The lesson here: Even if your armpit hair doesn't give you much incremental increase in cooling, you're ahead of the game in distributing your scent and attracting a mate!
Ivan, you're placing yourself at a disadvantage by shaving those pits.

It does itch, but the itch goes away after a while. Just keep in mind that when you start to shave you have to keep it up.

Good thing I live in Canada.
I shave my head clean of hair, armpits, face, butt-crack, and crotch.
I am not noticeably warmer or cooler.
EDIT: My armpits have never itched from shaving, in fact, I believe they itch less.
Pubic hair though, itches a bit when it grows back (2-3mm in length) and I'm sweaty.

I wonder why head hair keeps on growing, but body hair stops when it reaches 2 cm or so in normal people
Look at animals. They also have areas where the hair grows longer than in other areas.
