Spikey type chain tensioners

Hello, i just got a nimbus performer giraffe and i dont know how to use the chain tensioners properly... instructions are a bit vague... anybody got any pictures of spikey chain tensioners in action so i could figure it out?

either that or some whopper verbal advice...
