What is this phlamph? Vote and the answer will be revealed during the first week of the new year.
Then it will be put to rest.

What do birthdays have to do with anything?
For me the poll was a toss up between number 2, 5, and 8 from the top....
Well, Juggle did mention New Year. That's when my birthday is.
Anyway, I think it's the non-native thumb theory. I remember Juggle talking about some french girl from a movie.

What a coincidence. I just sent back to Netflix the 1958 movie, The Vikings (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052365/) with Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Janet Leigh, and the wonderful, perennially middle aged Ernest Borgnine. What glorious kitsch.
But no, you're wrong.

Am I the only one who feels a little upset that the actual meaning of phlamph will be revealed?
I've gotten quite used to it now, and MR will be a little less enigmatic if we know what JJuggle is actually on about with his daily post.
It's become part of the furniture.

You lose, my dad was born at 11:56 on 31/12
I'm a loser, I know.
What's your name?
I need it because now if anyone will ask me why is it that I think that I'm a loser, I can say because xxxxx's dad was born at 11:56 on 31/12.
Btw, just to confirm. That 11:56 is at night, right? More like 23:56? Because mine is.
Last chance...

So, here it goes. Spoiler Below.
The first, fourth, and seventh items while things that might have occured to me are not the origin of phlamph. It would be nice if the word described one of those things.
I have also never heard a cat make the sound phlamph and can't imagine why where one decided to hock up a fur ball would make a difference.
There is truth to the second item but it, too, is not the origin.
Now as for items five and eight. Both are unequivocally true and will continue to be so. But they too are not the origin.
Which leaves item three, "The result of a non-native English speaker's attempt to pronounce the word thumb." This is, in fact, the origin as suggested here (http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showthread.php?p=645206&highlight=french+woman#post645206) and noted with a minor inaccuracy by ivan.
Way back in the eighties I had a friend who was dating a French woman by the name of Anne. She was known by all as Frenchie. She was a graduate student at Columbia and was had to learn English. She did quite well but for some reason she could never remember the word "thumb" and it always came out as "phlamph". And there it is. It's a great utterance and is now a part of my family's vocabulary. Say farewell.
And a happy 2007 to all!

My plamph is sore!!!
I don't know if its good that we know it, or if it leaves the word with less meaning.
As for me, I still like the random occurrence of Plamph in MR, and knowing what it means doesnt make it any different.
I'm just gonna have to start using it a lot now.
Go plamph!!!

Man, phlamph is probably some character you've taken from a video game. For example do you know what a ELUM is or squiggoth.
Oh well, whatever it is just tell and get it over and done with. Besides you said when the new year comes. You'll tell us. :D :D :D

Dave, I've not played, but would be happy to give it a go should we find ourselves in the same vicinity.
