I was up and started watching football with the cowboys playing the texans (funny:p names).
The girlfriend is still in bed. I fed the cat and was thinking of my own breakfast. Then at 7:05 we heard the rumble. I knew just what it was and I ran for the front door. My girlfriend was right behind me without me saying a word. The cat went under the bed(not smart). Fortunatlly no damage. We did see the shaking trees, clattering rain gutters, and a chime that never normally dings.
The reason my girlfriend and I are so aware of the warning signs is two reasons.One, Hawaii is prone to earthquakes and two, because the back of our house sits on 35 foot toothpicks. The front of the house is on the earth ( close to the ground). Yes the back of the house is higher than I would want to fall.
Worst thing that happen was no electricity for 11 hours till 11:30 pm.
Hope to be ready for the next one.:D

I just heard about this a few hours ago on my way home from school. Sounds scary. I've never experienced an earthquake, but there was one off the gulf coast of Florida earlier this year (which is VERY rare). My mom said she felt something rumbling, but she didn't hear the train going by. She got a phonecall about an hour later from one of her friends who told her about the small quake in the gulf.

I did get to go on an earthquake simulator in NZ, but it's not the same...

Earthquakes can be pretty scary, we had a 6.6 up here about 5 years ago. It was really loud! Funny thing was I was in the bathroom on the second floor of my school. The guy in the stall next to me yelled, "What should we do?" I don't think I answered him. I wasn't about to run outside with my pants down. Anyway I wasn't really prepared for such a big quake. We usually have little 3.0s here that just give a little movement and only last for a few seconds. The big one we had last for nearly 30 secs.

Jacquie and I were thinking about you after we found out the quake covered most of the main islands. Glad there were no problems. We didn't know you lived in a stilt house! Stilt houses and earthquakes...

Hey everyone,
I'm living on the Big Island of Hawaii untill december (puna side) and rode out the earthquate in my little stilted jungalo on Sunday morning. It was like no other alarm clock i've ever had! The earth moved for about 15-20 seconds and nearly shook my oil lamp off my desk. Power went down and the phones were out of action- luckily enough for me, the place i'm staying at is pretty self sufficient and didn't sustain much damage!
Its the first earthquake i've even been in (Australia is not near any plate boundaries and does not have any active volcanoes)
The strange thing was that the night before i was reading Bill Brysons a short history of nearly everything and had just finnished the part on Plate tectonics! Thoughts of Yellowstone exploding and general doom were running through my head for a while but after the few largish aftershocks i went back to sleep.

How long did the one you had last?

It sounded like no one was really hurt, right?

They said it was 6.6 for 15 seconds. I didn't think it was that long. My girlfriend Val, thought it lasted longer. Nobody got hurt.

That reminds me, I better go look under the house for inspection.
