Any common get-togethers in Melbourne? I think I saw one mentioned at the museum monthly, but it looked like it was posted over a year ago, so I figured i'd best get more current word. Plus, i'm still pretty inept, and in any case mostly just interested in commuter.

I mostly ride street/freestyle.

The uni meets are still on. The last sunday of each month from about 2 'til 4ish at the museum. Umm.. It'd be good to see you there, I don't know how many people will be there at the end of december though. I know for a fact that Max and I won't be attending.

it probably depends on what riding you really want to do. I know there a heaps of street riders in melbourne that meet fairly regularly and in Brisbane there are muni meets every week but little street, though there are heaps of keen street riders.

There are a heap of riders in Brisbane, I don't know of anyone living in Springwood but there is a guy called Brandon that lives around that area I'm pretty sure.

There are Muni rides at the end of Underwood road which is pretty close to you, we ride every saturday morning though we also ride at Mt. Cootha.

What kind of riding are looking into doing?

Well if it did, when people see you riding your unicycle. That won't see as unique or be amazed at what you can do. So to make it short, its good that it's not as popular as it should the skaters and BMX/MTB riders. :D :D

Yeah that's true, but when I'm riding my coker or giraffe. I feel like i can ride anything or do anything that a skater or BMX rider could do. BTW i prefer to ride alone most times. It gives me that sense of independence/helpfulness knowing that I'm making people happy and inspiring them to try new things. Also if i could ride a unicycle, then so can they. :D :D

when you put it that way your quite right it is fun to feel special but i just hate it when people make jokes about unicycle just because they can't ride that doesn't mean unicycling is only for clowns.

Evan
Well, i like it when people are making fun of me for riding my unicycle/s. The comebacks i give them when they try to insult me, makes them shut up. :D. Also i have seen clowns riding BMX, they just have smaller versions of it. :D :D So if i were you, i wouldn't feel ashamed of the fact that you're doing something different with your life and its makes other people jealous. Just be yourself cause no one change who or what you are except for yourself. :D :p :) :p :D

I live in Perth!

I'm just riding a pretty basic Torker 20" uni :)

Though I just got a new tyre because I wore a hole in my last one so it looks better (cooler?) than the actual quality of the uni, it's a 2-tone black&white tyre!

I was originally going to go with a white tyre, but after seeing the 2-tone ones I had to go with that hehe, it looks reminiscent of an old 60's car tyre.

But yeah, I haven't seen anyone else in Perth that rides a unicycle, barring my friend. Granted we don't ride around too much and typically only in our suburbs North of the river) hehe.

I went to a skate park the other day to give it a try, I could do all of riding up one or two ramps.. lol, with these BMX riders flipping around and grinding etc I think I need to learn some freestyle skills.. being able to ride backwards and idle just doesn't cut it for showing off :P

Mind you being drunk and riding around a pool with a pint in your hand did elicit some cheers at a friend's recent 21st! though in retrospect it was probably a bit silly lol

We've made the submission to the IUF board for UNICON XV to be held in Wellington New Zealand in 2009/2010. The submission was made on Monday this week.

Fingers crossed, but plan on being there if you are from Australia. It will be the best Unicon yet :p

About every 2 years we have the UniNats somewhere in Australia. Still waiting to find out the date for the next one.

Once a month there is a unicycle meeting at the Melbourne Museum forecourt - last Sunday of the month, about 2pm. Riders of all styles and abilities turn up so it is a good place to meet people.

In Victoria unicycles are classified as bicycles so you do need a helmet to ride on the road or public land. The police do enforce this rule for unicycles!

I believe it is the same in the other states. Check the website of your roads authority to find out the details.

In South Australia unicycles are not classified as bicycles. They are classed as Wheeled Recreation Devices, which are the same as a pedestrian. As a pedestrian you don't need a helmet and can ride on the footpath or some roads. However, I am led to believe that there are sub-laws (or whatever there called) that states you need a helmet, knee, and elbow pads for these devices. I haven't bothered to look into further yet though. Have been meaning to. I have been riding without a helmet and had police drive past and slow down but not stop. Either they just haven't seen one before and I don't need one, or maybe they don't know what the rules are either.

Check your own states Road Traffic Act. And possibly even call the police information people. Make sure you get an answer in writing (or at least the info for where to locate it).

Same here. I'm (very likely) moving to Melbourne in July for one semester of studies at Monash. Coming from a small town (pop. 22,650) in the waynorthern part of Sweden (=snowy around 6 months of the year), it'll be quite a difference. As of now, the closest riders I know of are some 260km away.

Why would danger have a letter box? Who is going to write him letters? Except for maybe the Occupational Health and Safety Department, even then he wouldn't listen.

and as for shooting projectiles... it doesn't become a projectile untill it is shot. Unless it is self propelled, and in that case it needs no shooting.

You know nothing of Danger! you wouldn't know a hot potato from thin ice even if there was a pamphlet.

Any common get-togethers in Melbourne? I think I saw one mentioned at the museum monthly, but it looked like it was posted over a year ago, so I figured i'd best get more current word. Plus, i'm still pretty inept, and in any case mostly just interested in commuter.
Yes theres a get-together in the Melbourne museum on the last Sunday of the month every month at 2 PM! hope to meet you there!!!
cheers uni98

Looks like I may be flying up to Brisbane on the 31st of May to do the "Brissie to the bay" MS ride.

Still awaiting confirmation that Cokers can enter the event but wondering if anyone in vegas could loan me a couch to crash on the 31st?

Arrive 31st -> Depart 1st.

A couple of questions to you Melbourne riders.

Is the monthly meet still on, and if so, is it still the last sunday of the month at the museum?

And where are some good spots to practice trials in Melbourne?

Hey guys. I'm in Hornsby, Sydney. I've had a uni for a while and have never been able to ride it (tried only very occasionally).

After some inspiration from Jimwahhh (who goes to UTS with me) I signed up last night and read through some tips on how to learn to uni properly. I went from not being able to go 1 metre to riding down the full length of my carpark (75 metres) in about 30 minutes. Its an awesome feeling when it just finally clicks!

I ride some rust old 24" uni I got from a mate a few years ago (swapped him for a small R/C engine I never used). Its a very uncomfortable thing, but it DOES have spokey-dokeys! The crank-arm metal is so soft though that the thread for one pedal is completely stripped, making it wobbly and very hard to ride now. I guess that may be down to lack of use, or just sh!t metal.

I live next door to a bike shop that I'm pretty friendly with, so I'm keen to pay them a vist when I get home today, as I've got the uni-bug now!
