how could you not include ryan atkins in the poll?!?!? hes only one of the tops trials riders (if not, best) in the world. My vote is still going for Kris, as he was the driving force for me geting into unicycling and he got wicked MUni skills. Ryan is a close second

I don't think any of the guys on the poll ride unicycles for a living. What is your criteria for "pro?" Until I hear back, my vote is for Peter Rosendahl: http://www.peter-rosendahl.com/en/index.html
Also I know Sem & Teresa are awfully good, though they're not doing shows for a living at the moment:

From the guys on your list, Kris Holm is my #1, though professionally, he's a geologist, or geology professor.

When I first read this thread, I thought: Aren't we all pro unicycling? Why would anyone who is anti unicycling come to this site?
But if you want to know who my favorite anti-unicyclist is, it's the guy at the grocery store, who doesn't want me practicing in his parking lot, simply because he's anti-unicyclist. He lets people WALK thru his lot, and even DRIVE CARS!!! What could be more dangerous than that??!
But unicycling? NOOOoo! What's with that?
He's my favorite because he's also got good produce.

And there are more that you could have put in the poll-at least the top people in Defect. But, that's how polls always are.

kris holm, he is the only one who could reallly be pro, and there are no "real" pros in unicycling :/ Sounds like we should start with you on what we want to use as a definition for "pro" unicyclists. Maybe we should start with whether "pro" is supposed to mean the same as "professional?"
The Unicycling Society of America Freestyle rules include a definition of professional unicyclists, intended to slot them into the Expert category. But to be fair, this definition points to only people who actually do performing at a level that's similar to a Freestyle competition (like Peter Rosendahl or Teresa & Sem). It's a very rarified group.
In fact, the IUF no longer addresses professional performers in its Freestyle rules and the USA will probably follow suit eventually.
But a "pro" unicyclist should not simply be someone who gets free T-shirts or parts from a sponsor, either. It can be someone you've seen ride really well in a video, but in a video you have to remember what you're seeing may have taken 50 takes to get right.
So who or what is a pro?
henkka
2007-03-07, 08:32 PM
I don't think there's any professional unicyclist, except circus performers. My favourite street unicyclist is Xavier, favourite trial unicyclist is Ryan and favourite freestyle unicyclist is Kaori. I can't just say one, because they're all different style riders.
unifreak7
2007-03-07, 08:33 PM
Sponsored and simply recognized as a pro by the majority. Democracy type of thing, (of course in america we allow a president with less votes to actually win.) Sponsored means you are noticed by those who count. Not that other people don't count, but seriously, I know some good riders out there, but I can't do anything for them. I notice them, but it doesn't matter, except for maybe how they feel about themselves, but that might be thinking too much of myself. Pro's are the people putting out vids and HELPING other riders get better. Also it helps if you're in a movie (notice helps, this is the least important, and actually dismissable) that is sold, but I don't consider some peeps in Defect pro. It's kinda an all of the above situation to be considered pro to me (except the sold movie part.)
-Shaun Johanneson

I love that Kaori chick.
And I agree with Shaun's "definition" for what a pro unicyclist is. A pro unicyclist and professional unicyclist are different things in my mind.
