Ok, here's my question..
What the heck is an mp4??
I've seen a couple files recently that are in this format, and I've never seen it before...just what is it for exactly?
(I can spell inquiry, unlike chase! :P)

it's a container format. it can contain AAC audio files (like from iTunes) or compressed video files.

Question: what software do you need to play them on Windows? I'd start making MP4 videos tomorrow, but not much use if I can't instruct users to download a suitable player.
(Don't tell me to look at the wiki, as "The Wikimedia Foundation servers are currently experiencing technical difficulties.")

winamp plays mp4 files just fine, though I prefer VLC media player (http://www.videolan.org).

Apple QuickTime player. It's easy to get and easy for people to install. It plays MP4 videos.
There are other options, but they typically cost money or may be less user friendly to install and configure.

When I convert video files for my PSP they come out as MP4 files. Winamp only plays the audio from them, but VLC plays them fine.
I think ipods use them too.
It's just a video format, but I never heard of it before needing it for the PSP.
