GILD that is an extremely high tech set up you have there
iridemymuni
2006-07-30, 09:14 AM
looks like you'd have some nice speakers in there. i've got a set up which enables 4 computer speakers and one alarm clock together, but i dont know where it went so i'm using one computer speaker which i wired together aswell, it's so dodge.
I'm at the office.
I don't have a PC at home.
It's a professional production studio so yeah, it's pretty well tech'ed.

Well my desk *is* cramped.
Or maybe I'm messy...
Relax, a clear desk is a sign on a cluttered mind.

If you're saying that in turn a cluttered desk is the sign of a clear mind... then something's wrong with me!
Actually what I am is a Procrastinator. With a capital P. My desk right now is relatively tidy since people are coming round to view our flat for rental. I'll post a picture of my new desk once we've moved.
Wait a second, your desk is very clear, GILD! And is that where you broadcast from? Do you spend time on the forum while you work? I can just imagine someone sitting in the chair opposite trying to be interviewed and you're browsing around here hee hee hee ;)
And is that where you broadcast from?
No, that is the production studio where I make ads, jingles and wildebeest recordings.
This is where we broadcast from.
This pic was taken thru the window seperating the production studio from the on-air studio. It fits onto the right edge of the previous pic I posted.
My colleagues' faces have been obscured to protect the innocent.
The window on the other side is right behind the reception desk. The person standing there is actually standing at the reception desk.
We're a bit of a live fish bowl here.

No, that is the production studio where I make ads, jingles and wildebeest recordings.
You can fit wildebeest in that tiny looking room?! Respect. How do you get them to learn the jingle lines, or do you get them from a talent agent who specialises in singing wildebeest?
Smoke and mirrors. The tools of the radio trade.
Here's some backrou (http://www.unicyclist.com/gallery/?g2_itemId=222641)nd you may need.

Great, now I've got tp go ask iridemyuni what its about.. or I could search the forums..
It's true what they say about your voice, GILD.. it reminds me of Hugo Weaving's. And I couldn't catch too strong an accent, but maybe I need a longer piece to listen to.
Anyway, I was only trying to make you laugh with my last post ;) But then again I only think I'm funny :(

after hearing GILD's voice in the presonal greetings gallery, i was amazed at how well he could probably do like a discovery channel / national geographic channel documentary on some kind of animal or something. his voice just sounds so informative, like everything he says you know is going to be true like the people who do animal documentaries.

ohhhhhh.
I see now. But that doesn't explain how he fits the wildebeest in the room.
sorry, sorry, I know it's painful. I'll stop trying to be funny

well you see you get the best looking wildebeest there is (there are good looking wildebeest???) and stick it in a room. GILD, obviously knowing everything there is to know about wildebeest gives off a loud mating call (wildebeests have a mating call??) and then all the other male wildebeest quickly figure out how to get at least another 20 wildebeests in the room.

It's been so blasted hot here, 99 degrees today with a heat index of 115, that the boys computers were really heating up their rooms. With our monster puppy running around in the house, they have to keep their doors closed so they can keep everything in an upright position and don't lose stuff out of their trash cans. Having the doors closed makes the heat even worse, even with air conditioning.
So for the next several days while the heat wave is here, they've moved their computers to the cool basement playroom. This is their temporary setup. Ashley was over last night and her and Ben each sat at a computer and I.M.'ed each other from across the table. Go figure.
Okay. The only thing missing is a coffee cup. Dave, sorry for letting you down. I promise to try to get better and keep a coffee cup on my desk at all times.

The Ben Edwards Desk-O-Rama! He bought some new components that just arrived today. Here's what he bought:
Logitech G7 (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2135,CONTENTID=10716) laser cordless gaming mouse
Logitech G15 (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2166,CONTENTID=10717) gaming keyboard (with $100 rebate)
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS (http://www.soundblaster.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=205&product=4915) sound card
He already has a surround sound speaker system with a huge subwoofer that will rattle the walls. Ben, Ashley, and Brad listen to a lot of music up there. I think his base model was a 3.2 mHz system but that was before all the tweaking and upgrades. Not sure what he has now. It's like once when I asked a guy what year motorcycle his chopper was. He said, "Which part?"
Ben also has the wireless router on his computer because his is in the middle of Brad's and my computer. Brad and I both have almost line of sight with the router and it works well; Brad through the bedroom doors and me downstairs through windows. Ben built all three computers and the system.
Edit: That's a Guild Wars poster over his shoulder on the wall.

I get to the office this morning to find that some of the audio-panneling decided to fall down during the night.
The RAG-light smacking into my keyboard and chipping the SPACE BAR, the M and the N key.
It also gave the mixing desk a bit of a smack and that had to be reset.

A Logitech surround system to listen to music? That assaults the ears even if it does rattle the bones.

There have been some very elaborate home built flight simulators (http://www.t-b-x.com/prather/registry/) made. Some even include hydraulics to simulate motion. Pretty fancy stuff to be stuck in someone's garage. Check out this 747 (http://www.hyway.com.au/747/index.html).

Big bad Brad's desk. I built the loft a few years ago planning to build a desk underneath someday. Now that I'm gainfully unemployed, I've finally been working on it. The project in this photo still lacks the center drawer that I was able to install this weekend. I'm also going to paint the dark brown drawers the same color as the wall. It turned out pretty nice if you ask me.

I can instal hydrolics that will lift my bed up, then I will climb down into the room, and have the bed lower down.

Because I'm cool like that... ;)
Actually it's just so I can use my laptop for car trips, watching movies in bed, school, WiFi on vacation, etc. and have the power and stability of a desktop, also. Yes, I'm 12 years old and don't probably need or deserve all that techie stuff that most 40 year old business men are begging their bosses for. I just begged my "boss" [dad] enough, and he is really set on keeping me wired, connected, and up with all the techie happenings and advancements. I am very computer savvy, so he figured I deserved the equipment to enhance and provide for my technology craving. I'm also taking IC3 (Internet and Computing Core Certification) this next year of school. It's a 9th grade college-credit class, and I'm in 8th grade, but I was able to work my way in via impressing the teacher... :)

I don't know what you are thinking you'll get when you go to college. You typically don't get a nice big desk at college, at least for the first few years. Later you may move off campus and share an apartment or house and you'll have room for a proper desk. But for the first couple years it's going to be cramped desk central.
Some dorms and some fraternity rooms have customized rooms that have interesting cubby hole desks that have space. It's all about making creative use of the space available. Cubby hole desks are one way to make use of the space.

You are going to have to consider trimming down your expectations there. Most dorm rooms don't have that kind of room unless you are considering paying extra for a private room. Private or larger rooms are not always available so you may end up being forced to share a small room whether you like it or not.
Think about how you can get by with less so you don't get disappointed when you discover what college rooms are like. If you absolutely need two or three computers then consider a KVM box so you can share monitors and keyboards between the computers. But seriously, you don't need three computers at school. A desktop and laptop at most. Consider dual booting or using VMware if you need to have multiple environments.
Your roommate(s) aren't going to like it if you're the guy with too much stuff.

More addition to Bennie's desk. He's on his way to building his new system. The case, power supply and hard drive came today. He bought the Thermaltake Armor case with a 700W power supply plus a Western Digital Raptor X 150 Gb, 10K rpm hard drive. Its a pretty sharp looking case and he's put his current system into it already. The case is HUGE! He calls it "lots of opportunity".
As soon as he has the money, he'll buy the new computer innerds. The processor will be the Intel Core 2 Extreme EX6800. He knows what it is. It just sounds impressive to me. Even more impressive since his old computer will come down to my desk!

Yep, it's the best tubing for not going hard and cracking over time, and it also does not fog up like most other tubing.

I know exactly what you mean. But a 24" iMac can go a long way toward making you want a less-cluttered desktop! It's nice and spacious, and very, very bright! I'd have to buy a plug adapter (mini-DVI) to connect it to my 19" LCD monitor, which handles regular DVI and analog. I need an excuse to keep that monitor... If I end up wanting it at all.
I do still have a PC under my desk. Kind of sad really, it's a 2.4 GHz P4 and was relatively new when my company closed its offices and I brought it home. I've hardly needed to turn it on all year. But I still think it will be easier to install Windows on the new Mac than run a separate piece of hardware.
Except it gives me a 100% viable excuse to keep the extra monitor!
I've taken a picture of my desktop and workspace yesterday. I had to clean the office up for Stanley Steemer to come in and do the carpet, so it's never looked better. We'll see if I can get the pictures posted. I'm still in the process of moving data over to the new machine, at which point I'll be able to format my external drive to Mac instead of FAT32 and use it for proper backups.

WINDOWS IN THE OFFICE? What is your boss thinking? It's a proven fact that being able to see outside lowers increases daydreaming, which obviously lowers productivity.
This is why city officials never get anything done. If they did stuff right (i.e., chaining their employees to computers in a dark dungeon), much more could be accomplished.

blue carpet? that is just too cool
You should've seen the room before we painted it; same color as the carpet! Yuck! Before that it had cartoon characters hand-painted on the walls. Before that it was the state of California's first State-Certified timeout room for an autistic person (no, not me, this house used to be a group home). Before that it was apparently a laundry room.
One of these days that old carpet's going to have to go, but that day will suck because there's a ton of books, furniture, file cabinets, wiring and computer stuff in there!
The reason the floor is so clean, including the chairs, is that the carpet had just been, or was about to be, professionally cleaned. I'm sure JC already knows that idling a unicycle and using a computer keyboard don't work well together. And you need a really short unicycle. And kneepads. :)

I'm using the Solidworks/COSMOS Floworks/COSMOSWorks package on all four, it does CAD, finite element analysis and computational flow dynamics in one. The left three are running the CFD iterations, the right one is my model, just about to set it running. I'll go back in a couple of hours and see how they're doing.

Indeed it is, this is the drawing office, you can't see the racks of drawing boards and drawing materials off to the right but they probably get used more than the computers do.

I'm not using CAM, I'm currently designing a 1km high tower, so CAM isn't really an option. I might run a model off on the rapid prototyper if I can get the funding though. I 'work' at Oxford University, I'm a third year engineering science undergraduate.

Yeah they're pretty cool, the only thing is the material costs are very high on ours, which uses plastic wire. A small model can easily get through maybe £30-£40 of support and modelling medium.

How do you like Solidworks? if given the choice would you choose that 3d software over others?
This past fall my boss and I went to a hands-on solidworks seminar and played around with it for a while but we're not sure if it's the way to go. Currently I only have 2d software that I use for our cnc punch machine and brake press' so any new products we make I usually print out and do on card but it's not the most accurate.

It has a great GUI but the functionality is poor in places, particularly in the FEA section (no modelling of multi-bodies, can't handle complex shapes even on a very powerful computer). It's very fast to learn, the first years each create a complete model of a engine oil pump with rotating meshing impellers from scratch in 5 hours, having never done CAD before. The only other CAD program I've used is Ideas, which is an utter nightmare compared to solidworks, just hundreds of buttons with ambiguous icons and no labels on the screen. What excactly would your aims be for using solidworks? just to sketch your ideas of for producing wokring drawings to go in to production? drop me a pm if you have more questions.
