Hey, so I am getting a macbook and I get a free ipod with it. The free one is the 2gb nano but I can get whichever one I want and just get the price of that nano back.

So I have been thinking about it, I can either get the 2gb nano for free, the 4gb nano for $50 or the 30gb video for $90.

I want it for everyday stuff but I would probably also ride with it.

I have heard that the video is more prone to breaking if I land on it or something. And it is also pretty big which could be annoying, but 30gb+movies/pictures/music sounds better to me than 2 or 4gb of music/pictures.

What do you guys think?

For any type of physical activity with the iPod the nano is better because it's flash ram, not a magnetic hard drive. If it's going to get any kind fo jostling you're better off with the nano. If you need the data storage or a portable harddrive you might want to go for a larger one though.

I disagree, I would say that if you like Ipod video get that. I have an archos gmini400, pretty much the same as this (http://www.archos.com/products/pc_centric/gmini_402/index.html?country=global&lang=en)

It has a hard drive and I never have any problems with it. I have jumped 8 sets with it and it didn't skip then so I doubt it will skip with you. I would still be sure to get an extended waranty though as iPods in my experience are notorious for breaking.

I am not worrying about it skipping, more like breaking when I fall on it (like my cell phone).

I will probably get the nano.

i say get the video and spend $50 - $100 on a shuffle or the like that can hold enough music for a ride and wont break on you... plus your chances of it getting destroyed with one fall is very low... and you wont feel bad when you scratch it because all you use it for is riding, not trying to view movies with a gouge on the screen...

If you keep it in your pocket eventually it will get landed on. I always bang my hips into stuff. Get the nano and get a glasses case and put it in there while you are riding. You don't need a video ipod, you have a TV and computer for that. 2GB is a lot of memory to put in your pocket. I consider myself to have quite an extensive music collection and its only like 40GB. So get a big HD ipod if you want all the music you could ever download in your pocket, but keep in mind 90% of the time you will listen to 10% of the songs. I got a 1.5GB Rio Nitrus (cheap but decent) and it holds all the music I need when I'm not at my computer.

Hmm... Is it just me or does this sound like a clever marketing ploy?

Apple seems to be good at that...at least with me. I was looking at computers and there is always something else to upgrade to for not much more money. I think I have changed my mind like 4 times about which computer to get.

I say it depends on how much music you got. I've gotta get a new 60 gig as soon as I have the spare cash since my 20 gig photo is full. I dont even use the photo function and if I got a video I doubt i'd use it for that either. When you need alot of storage ipods are about the only things that go that big.

You can find some pretty sturdy protective cases on the internet. They don't cost the earth, and stop your iPod from being scratched/crushed/worn, yet still let you use the clickwheel withough a problem. I'd get the nano, and buy a protective case.

As mentioned above, the Nano has no moving parts in the drive, so is better suited to lots of shocks. Score one for the Nano.

I have heard that the video is more prone to breaking if I land on it or something. And it is also pretty big which could be annoying, but 30gb+movies/pictures/music sounds better to me than 2 or 4gb of music/pictures.
I thought the Nanos did video as well. Or don't they? Anyway, the Nano is less prone to "breaking" in terms of hard drive, as there isn't one. I have never heard an iPod skip, but my nephew's did die recently, from no known big shocks, maybe lots of little ones.

No iPod is "pretty big." The suckers are tiny!

Lastly, if you have more than 4GB of stuff to listen to/look at, the smaller Nanos may get annoying as you have to swap out your files. Or it may be plenty for you. As for me, I love my new 60GB iPod, and am about to get a Contour Design case to protect it. That protects it from scratches and dents, but not from shocks of course.
