So, is it time to boycott Holiday Inn?

From a Holiday Inn television ad seen this weekend.

Two guys are discussing how they used "points" they received by staying at Holiday Inn that are redeemable for merchandise:

Guy 1: I got my son a unicycle.
Guy 2: Is he a clown?
Guy 1: I hope so.

Maybe Guy 1 really does want his son to be a clown.
Do you know the backstory?
What if Guy 1 always had a dream that one day, he'd be a clown, but after injuries dealt from an unfortunate pie incident when he was but a clownling, meant he had to be boring from then on.
Now, here's his best friend, Guy 2, understanding Guy 1's pain and how he might move on if his own son became a clown just giving Guy 1 a little hope, and let's face the facts, clowns ride unicycles.

I think it's a sweet and moving epic. It brought tears to my eyes*

Plus my dad works for Holiday Inn, so I'd appreciate if you didn't boycott them.

I am upset about this hateful attitude toward clowns. We should not blame clowns for something that they cannot help. It has been scientifically proven that clowns do not choose to be clowns; they are born that way. No one would voluntarily choose the sort of ridicule and hate that a clown faces (well, maybe BillytheMountain would, but that is beside the point).

Holiday Inn should be praised for their inclusive advertising.

Reminds me of the ad for something where the spokesman says something is so easy to use, a neanderthal could do it. Next scene, he's apologizing on behalf of the company to two neanderthals over dinner.

I am already boycotting them because they charge too much.
In many cases you get what you pay for. But I don't know if Holiday Inn is corporate, or a franchise. In any case, there can be variations from one property to another. I haven't stayed at one in a long time, but every Holiday Inn Express I ever stayed at was very nice, clean and well-appointed. Worth a higher price than Motel 6, for instance.

They mentioned a unicycle in their commercial (which I haven't seen). Good for them! The mass media has a long way to go before it understands unicycling today. We just have to keep working at it. Dan Heaton is doing his part, apparently he's going to be on that upcoming America's Got Talent show, a competition for variety acts. Hopefully it will be more respectful toward the talent than The Gong Show was, but the commercials make me worry...
