They're the sweatest band ever. I'm really want to get tickets. I live in Minnesota and their last show is in Minneapolis so it is going to be huge.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are rip offs. They stole a Tom Petty song. :p
There's a big stink going on right now about whether the Chili Peppers copied the Tom Petty song.
Info:
Tom Petty vs. Red Hot Chili Peppers (http://www.spin.com/features/everybodystalkingabout/2006/06/060601_rhcp/) (includes a short clip of each song)
Petty vs. Chili Peppers (http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/10481746/latest_news_petty_vs_chili_peppers_townshend_explains_song_and_more)
And a 12 minute MP3 (http://www.wgmd.com/SOUNDS/FEATURES/051706-petty.mp3) of the radio broadcast that started it all
Note that in order to get the two songs to sync they DJs had to change the tempo and pitch of the songs. It's not a straight one-to-one like the DJs make it sound. They did some fancy audio editing to get the results they got.

Tom Petty is reportedly considering legal action against the Red Hot Chili Peppers after learning that their Top 10 single, "Dani California," might share certain musical elements with Petty's 1993 hit, "Mary Jane's Last Dance." A Delaware morning radio DJ first noticed the similarity. "The chord progression, the melody, the tempo, the key, the lyrical theme… they're identical," DJ Dan Gaffney said on his show.
Geez, there's only so many chord progressions and ways to strum your guitar for pop music.

Yes, I don't find the controversy to be a big deal. The songs aren't that much alike and do sound distinctly different. It's just a fun little soap opera going on.
It would be nice though if the big names in music would be more creative. An alternative rock or good old rock-n-roll song that broke into a little jazz inspired free form playing would be nice. There's ways to make songs not like every other song. Longer songs would be nice too. Longer songs give them more room to do something new and have a song that progresses rather than the same old verse chorus verse.

Went to see them two years ago when they played in Hyde Park.
A good show.
James Brown, who was on beforehand, was infinitely more entertaining. :D

forget about using similar chord progresions and structures... bands do it all the time.
RHCP also played Commodores and Jimi Hendrix and Cat Stevens to name a few (tho these were covers they played)
