I just returned from a ride at Roman Nose State Park in OK, and just like at many rock climbing venues where there is a crowd at the base wondering why climbers do what they do, there was a multitude of people at the trailhead that just don't fully get what I'm doing. Since I had to answer similiar questions before I was ready for - "Why do you ride such a difficult cycle on such hard terrain?" My answer - I'm not looking for the path of least resistance for that can be found on the couch, but rather I seek my own personal path of greatest resistance. When I see a section of trail that I fear I can't ride, but chose to anyway and much to my own surprise make it, the resulting laugh is not about conquering the trail for you never own the earth, Mother Earth owns you. That is simply my spirit rejoicing in its victory over the demons of doubt, and no matter my failed attempts or dwindling abilities later on the fact will always remain a victory occurred there.

Simple answer: because it's fun
Reason: it's a challenge, it's normally very solitary, so there's no one to see you mess up, and you can be as loud and celebratory as you want when you fall on a certain part, and you get back up, go back, and do it again, and get it.

 When you fall on a certain part? I normally clutch the certain part, cross my eyes and groan, rather than rush to do it again.

I think the opening post was meant to be a statement of philosophy rather than a question.

My answer to why do I Muni, or more widely, why do I uni?

Er... why do anything. It's fun. I enjoy it. Er...

Lady to jazz musician, "Tell me, I've always wondered: what exactly does swing mean?"
Jazz musician to lady: "Lady, if you gotta ask, you don't got it."

I'm assuming you know what I mean, but, since I can't tell just through text, and for the benefit of the people who really don't get it: I meant a certain part of the trail

I like unicycling, the woods, and I need exercise to be healthy and retain my sanity (what of it remains ;) ).

I muni because it's more fun than running. It's much easier to motivate myself to go out muni'ing than running, and I'd always do one of the two to keep in shape. I like being able to run farther than all my friends.

Cecause i cant think of one thing that i would rather do in the mountains.

To me the most fufilling experience is reaching the summit of a trail and looking out at the mountain that you have just conquered, and knowing that you made it there with your determintion and strength.

I also enjoy when mtn. bikers yell out "holy f**k did you see that kid?!":D

The painting is by Miro. I think there is definitely a reference to a unicycle.

"Not I," said the duck is a famous passage about shirking responsibilty from a frequently retold epic called The Little Red Hen. I put it in my title as a not very direct reminder of our civic responsibility to promote unicycling awareness."

I also like how the duck sucks responsibility.

MUni is like hiking on one wheel. What could be more fun? It nurtures the soul and the body.

MUni is fun, the only thing is that you can't go as fast as you want, you are limited by the size of your tyre and your crank length. but only than that its quite a challenge which makes it fun.

My MUni is hiking.

still, it's nice to be out in the mountains. And MTBers are nicer than pedestrians.

Excellent. Needs a semicolon or dashes or something:

"I'm not looking for the path of least resistance -- for that can be found on the couch."

What a great T-shirt slogan that would make, not just for unicycling but for whatever you want!

Walking is boring, biking is okay, but for me muni-ing is definitely the most fun and non-competitive way of getting (the legs at least) fit.

As a kid I used to get bored by country walks, and it seems that I still do today. But muni-ing the trails adds a whole new dimension, having to roll over and/or around the bumps and roots and rocks and things that a walker wouldn't even notice.

I'm still really only a beginner municyclist, but I do enjoy it a lot nethertheless, especially when I somehow make it through a technical section that does it's best to throw me off.

And apparently my leg muscle has really beefed up. I just wish there was something I could do with my arms that would be just as enjoyable...

Not for me, when I used to bike with my Dad I would only see him at the beggining and end of each trail, now that I ride MUni he can keep up with me (yes, he rides really slow)

Here is what started the fuss - nearly 500 MTBs and then in the back....
(ok, over 40 more MTBers where still behind me!) http://cycleok.com/ and here is the only mention he made.... I saw a guy on a unicycle who quipped “What, you think your friends won’t believe you?”, as I stopped to snap his pic.

exactly the same reasons! I would say that sanity is at the top of my list.
by the way I learned this morning that my cholesterol is going steadily down ... since it is stress induced this is a proof that unicycling in general and Muni more precisely relieves my stress.
The more bumpy the ride the more even my temper!

Switch to riding with hikers, then you can be the one who's annoyed :)

On second thought, that very much depends on the trail. We've had hikers with us on most of the major MUni rides at the CA MUni Weekends and Moab MUni Fests. They seem to keep up rather well, though they don't stop as much as we do...
