This is the World Cup thread.

Germany won the first game against Costa Rica.

Who is your favorite team?

Can anyone beat Brazil?

Discuss here.

Millions of years of evolution to develop opposable thumbs and the world's most popular sport doesn't allow you to use them? I can't believe people still watch groups of people kicking an effigy of the head of the enemy around a field. Oh, well, they watched Star Wars and thought it was great, too. And they continue to use emoticons and believe that they are expressive.

Two players on the pitch can use them, unfortunately noone seems to have told Jens Lehmann that!

I just watched most of the Germany game, it was a hell of a start to the tournament. Would have been better if Germany had lost but you can't have everything, especially as Costa Rica were so rubbish.

Another game kicks off in the next half hour-woo!

The soccerroos (Australian footbal team), have qualified for germany! (the first time in 32 years). If we get knocked out in the first rounds (in the same group as Brazil, Croatia and Japan) i pledge my supporter allegance to Togo for the entire competition.

Sorry Mark, but I can't help thinking you'll be supporting nobody after the group stage in this case... I'd suggest choosing a substitute team after the group stages have finished!

Now, how do I attach one of those England car flags to my uni...

This is the year we'll break that rule!!

Do I really believe England'll win the Cup?
I want to, I really do.

COME ON ENGLAND!

Yesterday evening (after the game :)) I wanted to go unicycling at my usual place, but there are some bars nearby and it was still too crowded. So the worldcup is definetly interfering with my unicycling ;) .

On a side note: In the weeks before the FIFA really lost all credibility. All those rules regarding advertisement and the official sponsors are really over the top. Fortunately now the focus is on the sport again.

Go ENGLAND!

This is my first year really watching soccer at all, and i've caught all five games for about 80minutes of them on average. (Thanks to Kyla H.) Love the sport, really excited to see brazil play, heard a lot about them. Gonna be a good next four weeks. Laters

p.s. First time watching David Beckham play, and I heard he's really good at freekicks, and invented the curve on the ball, well what was the first thing he did in today's game? I wasn't disappointed. haha

(edit) - I forgot i'm under my girlfriend's (Kyla Hammer) computer name, since i'm on her computer. muhaha

And thanks to T&T from us anglos for putting some pressure on Sweden after our somewhat less than thrilling 1:0 win over Paraguay.

I was disappointed that The Ivory Coast couldn't turn over Argentina though. It almost looked like they were going to before the first goal went in.

That line made me smile. And doubt;
if going to the moon was as easy as going to the supermarket by unicycle,
then I guess I would be juggling a lot up there (while having less gravity).

ok, as a brazilian I felt obligated to post...
I think the cup had a very week start and the games are really hard to watch...
hope teams start doing better now...
I don`t think brazil is already the winner. in 1982 the feelingh was the same and brazil didn`t win...
maybe this "the cup is owers" feeling knock brazil out this cup too...

I`m hoping some team like portugal or japan win though

I'm not really a big soccer fan but Iwatched the Sweden - Trinidad game t'other day...How cool is Trinidad's defender with the dreads!

I'm going to be working in a pub when the Trinidad - England game's on...I'm going to put lots of reggae on during half time to see how much I can wind up the locals...

On a related note, I came across this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/5038310.stm) t'other day.

i still watch every night even if they are up late i couldnt get over the australla vs japan game. @ the end the egyptian ref ( i aint being racist there was just more then one ref on the field) he went up to guus hiddink and apoligized for the goal he said it was a foul and the only reason he didnt call it is becuase it was already half way into the game and he saw the shot again and said shite i was wrong!!! Yup, the last 2 times England won the Ashes, the Pope died, Liverpool won the Champions League and the P.Charles got married...As the joke goes, the next time P. Charles decides to get married and Liverpool win, somebody better warn the Aussies and the Pope...

Nope Ukraine are still in, they haven't even played a game yet. I'll be keeping an eye on them as they are one of my sweepstakes teams too.

I jus wasted an hour and a half watching Togo vs. South Korea, the worst game I've seen yet by a mile:(

Brazil are playing later though, should be good!
