It's not that their saying you can't, it's that they're saying you shouldn't... because it's better the right way.
But who says the "right" way is the right way?

I've never done the popcorn thing, but today I sat on the ground to eat my lunch because the weather was too nice to sit inside. The outside seating at the restaurant was full, and a bunch of people ventured outside while waiting for their order only to return inside. So, instead of succombing to the pressure to use a chair and table, I sat down on an empty piece of ground and ate my lunch. Although, I felt a little guilty when a mother at a nearby table was yelling at her child to get up off of the ground. :D

Good for you man!
Personally, I find sitting on the ground can often be much more relaxing, and satisfying, and just better all around than using a chair.

Same thing that happens when I do it the "right" way.
Not when I did it... Not only didn't it work, but all those inverted evil seeds have not ceased to wreak havoc on my humble existence.
Each seed seems to bring with it some pestilence. I couldn't freemount my coker for a week, my office mate brough a really smelly lunch to the office, my cat and my beagle decided to start WWIII, the reviewers slashed my latest article, and jeep needed another tank of gas. I need to find another pack and slice it open and count the seeds to see how much trouble I am in for. Perhaps there will be one kernel of hope at the bottom of the pack.
You weirdos are admitting to eating microwave popcorn??!?
I am shocked and appaled.
I'm still trying to work up the courage to tear off my mattress tag.
You microwave your mattress?!
My mattress should be turned over every few months, apparently. It needs a label on both sides that says "This side down (in a month's time)"

You microwave your mattress?!
Yeah, we're not in Kansas no more Phil....

this thread sounds mysterious to me: I have a microwave oven and I sure know what pop-corn is .... but I do not understand the topic .... I think if I would start a thread on "on which side are you cutting Roquefort cheese?" that would sound mysterious to most (BTW the way of cutting roquefort is an essential element of table "etiquette": you can spot a gross , uneducated person just with this test)

Your comments about the cutting of the cheese make it clear this topic is not in the least bit mysterious to you.
Would it have helped if I'd said, "Ce côté vers le haut"?

So misspelling it while Googling is not good then?
In case you didn't know either (http://www.gourmetretailer.com/gourmetretailer/search/search_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1086658)

I'd be willing to bet that MikeFule could quote Pliny the Elder on the subject of roquefort.
Was he the guy with the dolphin?
I'd bet that Mike's brother would probably dismiss it as 'foreign muck, like...'

calling a man from Gascony a liar is tautological (we even elect a king of liars each year!).... but in that case I was really not guessing the exact point ... may be I need a drink.

This side up on the downside would not spread the butter substance evenly. Since the butter substance is the only source of taste as well as the only semi-edible stuff in the bag, you would have a layer of really substance-soaked popcornlike mess on the downside of the bag and a top layer of white tasteless, air-filled mush to pick out of your teeth.
The other day, Ben put two green olives side by side in the microwave that produced a tiny light show. We've also done a CD but CDs shouldn't be left in the raging oven for more than 5 seconds. It's quite the spectacle though.

Enjoy. The article is racier than you might suspect. It mentions Spodic tongues! I don't think this counts as On-line publication. Here's the abstract and a sample of the rest.
Abstract
Intense variations in soil horizon sequences of Spodosols result from treethrow, lateral as well as vertical transport of soil components, and dependence of soil properties upon microtopographic features. These limit the applicability of the classical pedon and soil-landscape concepts to watersheds that contain Spodosols. To overcome limitations, we precisely measured horizon volume, 3-dimensional horizon distribution and horizon variability by a new set of methods, and we related these properties to environmental drivers measured at 10-, 5-, and 1-m resolution. We used these relationships to identify patterns and drivers of eluviation and illuviation in a watershed in Northern Michigan. The volumes and spatial distribution of eluvial horizons correlate significantly with flow area and slope, with greater volumes generally being associated with steeper, west-facing parts of the landscape. The volume of the Bhs horizon is significantly correlated with the wetter, more concave landscape positions, whereas Ortstein layers and the Bs2 horizon have greater volumes in higher parts, more convex of the landscape. We show that lateral transport of materials in the surface and subsurface, the spatial scale of soil processes, and the spatial scale of our observations of them are critical considerations in the study of soil-landscape dynamics.
Here's the Racy part of the conclusions
We observed great diversity in morphology, frequency, and spatial distribution of tongues in this watershed (Fig. 6). Some pedons have broad and short tongues that influence only the E and upper B horizons; others have long and narrow tongues that penetrate deep into the subsoil. We examined the cumulative length, average length, cumulative width, average width, and the length/width ratio of tongues in each of our pedons. The large number and high level of statistical significance of correlations of the occurrence and morphology of the tongues with environmental factors indicate that development and spatial pattern of the tongues is not simply incidental random variability in a rapidly forming and dynamic system (Table 3). For example, the number and cumulative width of the tongues are each significantly positively correlated with the wetness index and are significantly negatively correlated with higher portions of the watershed (Table 3). The formation of spodic tongues that are narrow may be facilitated by drier conditions that support strictly vertical flow resulting in the streak-like appearance of these tongues (Table 3). The formation of tongues that are wider may be facilitated in wetter conditions that support the more effective degradation of the E and B boundary by lateral transport over its surface (Table 3). Because the tongues penetrate the interface between E-B horizons, the cumulative width of the tongues in each pit may be an indication of the degree to which the continuity of the B horizons has been degraded. The correlation of the cumulative width of the tongues with concave planar curvature suggests that the B horizons are more frequently interrupted by tongues in hollow landscape positions of the podzolized landscape, strongly suggesting the degrading effects of convergent subsurface water flux water over the illuvial B horizons (Table 3).

My sister once put a kitten in the microwave "to make it dry" when she was a little bod.
Luckily it was set to "defrost" and my mum got there in time.
Having seen what happens to an egg in the microwave I'm really glad the kitten wasn't atomised by the cooking box...Anyone seen the film "The Fly"
