Give the guy a break. It was just a poor attempt to raise awareness of May Day's Immigrant Day (http://news.yahoo.com/s/thenation/20060501/cm_thenation/1581085) demonstrations. (I can't believe May Day passed without one mention here on JC).
Here's young skianduniaddict's break.
That isn't a joke.
It a snippet of social-commentary.
Should he be repeating it on this forum?
I don't know. i don't think any of us who have so far responded to this thread haven't made at least one post that we've later regretted.
It happens.
This reminds me of a 'joke' from South Africa's apartheid days. There were two right wing parties in our parliament, the CP (Conservative Party) who were kinda right-wing and the HNP (Herstigte Nationale Party - reformed national party) who were pretty intensely right-wing.
While the CP fancied a return to petty apartheid (seperate busses, cinemas, bus stops and park benches), the HNP preffered a return to Verwoerd's original vision of 'Grand Apartheid' (seperate states, the whole nine yards).
The 'joke' was in the form of the question "Why can't the CP and the HNP work together to form a more efficient opposition?"
And the answer was "Because the HNP wants to chase all the black people into the sea while the CP won't allow them on the beaches."
Not a 'joke' nearly as much as a commentary. A way of telling an uncomfortable truth.

Thing is, I could see someone like Jay Leno using the line in his monologue on the Tonight Show. I've heard him do quite a bit of related stuff over the last week or so in response to the immigrant rallies and, agree with it or not, his material always manages to draw laughs from the audience. Why is that? Is it the source of the comment, the forum in which its offered, is the subject matter somehow underlyingly funny?
I don't condone racism in the least, I'm just curious about this.
Secondly, the word 'racism' is so easy to throw around and is easy to use as a scapegoat at times. Many experiences lead me to believe that not everything that appears on the surface to be racism is such.
Here's one of my favorite jokes. It is not racist in the least but some quickly jump to conclusions that it is.
A Mexican came up to view an American baseball game. When he returned home, his family asked about his trip. The young man shared that Americans are so nice and considerate. When his family wanted to know why, he explained that before the game, 40,000 Americans stood up and sang, "Jose, can you see..."

Thing is, I could see someone like Jay Leno using the line in his monologue on the Tonight Show... "Jose, can you see..."Leno would never do that (wait for it)..."As you know, today was Don't Take Your Illegal Immigrant To Work Day here in Los Angeles. No, all across the nation they had a Day Without Immigrants, is what they call it. Or, as Native Americans call it, the good ol' days." --Jay Leno
"Here's my question, did Governor Schwarzenegger go to work today?" --Jay Leno
"Lots of businesses were closed, streets were closed - everything was closed but that big hole down on the border." --Jay Leno
"In Orange County, President Bush was talking about immigration. Bush said that massive deportation is unrealistic. He said you can't just move 12 million people to another country. I don't know, Mexico did it." --Jay Leno
"They say there are something like 12 million illegal immigrants in the country right now, with another half a million coming every year. Remember in the last election when the Democrats claimed there was two Americas? Turns out one of them was Mexico." --Jay Leno
"According to this new bill that's tied up in the Senate, illegal immigrants who can prove they've been here for two years would be allowed to stay. So follow the logic here. If you can prove you broke the current law for two years, you've protected under the new law." --Jay Leno
"Our cowardly, idiot Congress left on a two-week spring break. They're the biggest bunch of do-nothings. They didn't do anything. They didn't come to terms with the bill. They just left and went on vacation. So apparently, Congress is also on a temporary worker program." --Jay Leno
"As you know, there were lots of huge marches around the country yesterday to protest the immigration laws. The marches had quite an impact on businesses. Restaurants had to close, construction sites had to shut down, the Yankees had to forfeit a game. ... Do you realize that Americans are now doing the jobs that immigrants won't do because they're out protesting?" --Jay Leno
"Over a million people marched today in cities across the country to protest immigration laws. And while we were watching them do that, a million more people snuck across the U.S./Mexican border." --Jay Leno
"This is what I don't get about this. They've got oil. Their citizens love the United States. Forget Iraq, we should have invaded Mexico." --Jay Leno
"Have you heard Hillary's plan for immigration? She's advocating what she calls a Smart Wall along the Mexican border. It will keep track of people using infrared cameras, remote controlled airplanes, and electronic devices. Yeah, that will work great -- she couldn't keep track of Bill in the White House." --Jay Leno
"You know these people coming across the border willing to work hard? I say make them senators. They couldn't do any worse of a job than these guys are doing." --Jay Leno
"The good news is that Congress is cracking down on illegal immigration. The bads news: a head of lettuce will now cost $300." --Jay Leno
"This problem with illegal immigration is nothing new. In fact, the Indians had a special name for it. They called it 'white people.'" --Jay Leno
"President Bush is down in Mexico right now. Again, I don't think President Bush gets it. As soon as he stepped off Air Force Once, he looked around and said, 'Wow, you got a big problem with Mexican immigrants down here, too.'" --Jay Leno
"This past week there were half a million illegal immigrants on the streets of Los Angeles and that was before the protests. That was Friday. ... Half a million people? It looked like career day at Wal-Mart." --Jay Leno
"Proponents of this amnesty program for illegal immigrants say they are willing to take on jobs American are not willing to do. You know, like come up with an immigration policy." --Jay Leno
Jay Leno: “Hey, you ready for the big immigration walkout on Monday? Or as Wal-Mart is calling it, self-service day.”
Jay Leno: “There's a big controversy over the fact that a version of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ has been released in Spanish. President Bush said today that the national anthem should be sung in English. And then he repeated his statement in Spanish.”
Jay Leno: “Bush said today, ‘It's bad enough the song starts with the words, “Jose, can you see?”’”

I am very anti-racist. It has caused major disputes in my family as my brother is in the BNP. He lives 3 miles away and I haven't even seen him since before Christmas. I take race issues seriously.
To me, the jokes posted here were not racist in any meaningful sense. They were jokes based on stereotypes, or on exaggerated versions of real situations.
It is true that many people would like to keep the Mexicans out; it is true that many labourers are Mexicans. The idea of anti-Mexican racists having a plan to keep Mexicans out, and the plan failing due to the law of unintended consequences is mildly amusing - especially as the fact that the Mexicans are often in the low paid manual jobs as a direct result of the racist attitudes which prevail amongst those who want to keep them out.
It's a case of "hoist by their own petard", and a joke against the system, rather than the Mexicans.
In England, we might make similar jokes about the Irish who (historically, at least) provide an important part of the workforce on big construction projects, and who (historically, at least) have been subject to racial discrimination.
There follows a racist joke which is offensive, and is posted to illustrate the important difference between a joke that has some tenuous basis in fact, and in generally good-natured stereotyping, and a joke that really is offensive. If you don't want to read an offensive joke, read no further.
It should be obvious to all of you who know my profile in this forum that I do not find this joke amusing, or condone the sentiments contained within it.
So, here is the offensive racist joke:
Q How do you stop a (insert ethnic minority of choice) from drowning?
A Take your foot off his head.
The joke that opened this thread was from a very different angle.
Just my opinion.

While I usually laugh at racist jokes, this one just isn't funny.
You are jumping tot he conclusion that this is necessarily an anti-Mexican joke. I disagree.
Here's one possible subtext: "Mexicans are no good for anythign except manual work. We want to get rid of them. Unfortunately, we need the b******s to build the wall."
That would be racist - an attack on the "out group" - in this case, Mexicans.
Here's an alternative subtext:
"Our mainstream (predominantly white US-born) society is inherently unfair. We discriminate against disadvantaged groups such as the Mexicans. We try to keep them out, but in their determination to provide for their families, they are willing to take the risk to come to the US, even if that means occupyning low-status, low-paid, high-risk manual work. Despite this we still unfairly despise them, and would prefer to be rid of them. Unfortunately, our mainstream society is so decadent that we no longer have the skills or the application to build a fence ourselves."
That is not racist, but satirical - a critique of the pretensions and inadequacies of the "in group".
Here's another version of the same joke: "My cook was so lazy, I sacked him; now I have to dial a pizza every night."
That is more similar to subtext 2 (a satire on the "in group", rather than an attack on the "out group".)

In last night's Letterman Monologue (http://www.cbs.com/latenight/lateshow/dave_tv/ls_dtv_monologues.shtml) Dave said President Bush wants to build a 700 mile fence on the Mexican border, and knows where he can find the cheap labor to build it (and then went on to make a comment on Halliburton profiting on it).
Letterman's writers must lurk on JC for their material.

I know people who can type, but can't use any of their fingers. Being able to type or spell is an choice, not an excuse.
The joke is mildly racist, but so are many others. I think of it like Gild said, as a social commentary, or like a political cartoon. The more you understand about our current immigration issues (especially as seen from a California point of view) the funnier it is.
My state is loaded with undocumented aliens from all over the world. Though we talk about Mexicans mostly, it applies to people from any country. If they were better-documented, we might know if the "all other countries" was more or less than 15% of the total. Mexico dominates because there's less land or ocean in the way. Most of these undocumented people are really hard workers, doing lots of dirty, difficult jobs. A big part of the problem is the economic impact of replacing these workers, namely on farms, with proper employees for proper wages+benefits+taxes, etc. The cost of many products would be greatly impacted, and might even make it impossible for these businesses to compete with their foreign counterparts. Does that make it okay? No, but it's one of the sides of the story I think many people are unaware of. Sorry, didn't want to take this off topic.
The vast majority of undocumented workers from Mexico are laborers. As the wall project is intended to make it harder for them to come over here illegally it's not inappropriate to link the building of the wall with the laborers it is designed to stop.
Back to the political side, you can build walls and make legislation all you want, but if you keep *employing* all these workers, they're going to keep on coming. The fight has to go to the employers. Okay, enough.
