Hi! I'm new here... I was driving MTB about 2-3 years in Croatian championship & now I discover a unicycle... I drive 20 Inch Unicycle "Professional" Qu-ax.

Questions:
1. Should I buy shinguards with ankle protections or SixSixOne 4x4 knee-shin guards?
2. Should I buy Helmet?
3. Should I buy gloves?

Thx

Helmet and gloves are essential, and I would recomend the 661's but I havn't tried anything else. Definately wear leg protection though. hope this helps

I only wear shinguards, i used to not wear those but once i started doing more street style i ended up with lots of cuts, but the shinguards stopped all of the pedal bites, and you should wear a helmet, i dont, but just to be safe, everyone one should (and i need to listen to my own advice)

Ive tried wearing gloves, but i didnt like them, they just didnt feel right when i was grabbing my handle, and i would get sweaty stinky glove hans, and i hated that too.

I don't wear anything but regular clothes. Safety equipment cuts down on cool scars.

I have 661 4x4s and Mace race gloves. Thats what i wear when i ride most of the time. I have a helmet that i wear when I wanna do something really stupid. I think that helmet and leg armour are essentil while gloves are more of a comfort thing for trials. But for muni all three are very important.

singaurds then helmet no need for gloves because in this order by the time you want them you wont need them

Get a Large, they are the best fit, specially seeing how your 13, youll grow more which will make them even better.

I have a friend, who is extremly skinny and not all that tall, about 5'5"ish, and he has the large, and it fits him great.

unless you (for some inexplicable reason) get hit with the pedal on the back of the calf alot, i have a good 661 substitute.

i wanted 661s, but i dont want to shell out the 35$ plus shipping (yes im cheap) so i just bought some shin guards and a pair of REALLY long black socks. it only cost like 15 bucks, and you get the same feeling of all over coverage, AND it stops 97% of shin injuries

measure the width of your ankle and just above your knee

There really is no substitue for 661's as far as leg protection goes. Nothing seems to cover and protect as well. No matter how hard of a hit your shins take you almost never even feel it, much less get hurt by it. And mine have never caused any discomfort, even after hours of trials riding.

I've never fallen on my head (*knocks on wood*), and I don't use a helmet, but I have been bitten by the pedals a good many times.

I tried using gloves once, but it was really too uncomfortable and not worth it. When I first started riding I got a weird brown bruise (it didn't hurt though) on one of my fingers. It went away after a few months and hasn't been back since...it was the strangest thing...

I just ordered some XL 4x4 661s with my new uni. Now that I've moved on to metal pinned pedals, I really think they're going to come in handy.

Same as everyone mostly:

661 shin guards
then
Gloves
and if you're doing anything extreme)
Helmet

i've never had a problem with hitting the back of my calves..

i also dont (haven't yet) attempt crankflips, so I guess unless you're going to be a hardcore street guy, you needn't worry about your calves.

I thought I was going to be doing mostly trials, but I do a lot of freestyle without shinguards.

i used a glove once and it was more uncomfortable than the potential risk of somehow harming my hand while holding the seat.

I hit the back of my claves a lot, from slips and falls.

The 661 cover the back, true they may not have any real protection back there, but the straps and the material are good enough. It may sting a tad, but you wont get cut, just a bruise at the most.

I have just started unicycling about 4 5 months ago and am doing some serious mountain trails on my Onza 24" and some decent cross country and road commuting on my KH 29". I have never used any gloves, guards or helmets. The only safety item that I have ever used are boots that cover the ankles for the rough mountain terrain. On the road and on moderate cross country I just use sandals(Israel is hot!) or sneakers. I would much rather spend the money on good quality unicycles and not on protective gear!
