I just joined boxing, and am considering ti quan do or however you spell it, and also chaos martial arts. So whats everybody else doing? Why'd you pick that one and how long you been in it?

Personally I think in a real fight, boxing would by far be the best training, exept for maybe muai thai where you are trained to use your elbows. and of course what bruce lee did, bruce lee is the man.

The ultimate form of fighting is the arcane art of saying " I'm so sorry, can I buy you a beer?"

Here's (http://images.google.co.za/images?q=guinness+avatars&hl=en&btnG=Search+Images) a bunch of Guinness Avatars.
If you wouldn't mind...
It's very confusing with you using John_Childs' avatar.

or real fighting i think bruce lee's martial art, or muay thai, or kombatan(filipino kendo) would be most useful. possibly brazillian juditsu. i've done tae kwon do and kombatan and kombatan is much more well rounded.

True that. The first lesson I got in Aikido was that love is the most powerful weapon. One who can derail an aggressor with kindness is the ultimate martial artist. Physical confrontation is only the last resort.

he does a million. He made his own (Chun Kuk Do) practiced Tung Soo Do, and probably does do Jeet Kwan Do or whatever. I wouldn't be surprised.

street fighter...seriously thats how ive taught myself to fight...survive at all costs. and i dont mean by fighting dirty but its more like a super combo of everything all boiled down into a semi effiecient fighting style.

not as cool as killer instinct with the "can i get you a soda? that combo's gonna take 3 mintues" style.

Martial arts are good for balance and tumbling skills.
But joisting is more fun :)

the two best fighting games ever are street figher 2(new challengers, turbo or original) and killer instinct. everything else is not even worth mentioning. If I had the choice i would take muay thai and boxing but there is no muay thai in town.

I've been learning about a martial art known as Aikido (basically means to be at one with the flow of the universe). It's focus is on defending yourself without harming the opposer. It relies on using your opponent's momentum to counteract his/her attacks (lots of flips, throws and grabs). Apparently it takes a long time to learn it well enough for it to be an effective form of self defence though. I really like the idea of not harming anyone while defending yourself. Or better yet, avoiding a fight all together.

Unfortunately, there is nowhere to learn it in the city I live in. So I may never learn it. Shucks.

I have learned some Jeet Kung Do, through independent studies, and I find it gives me the confidence to quickly end a fight, should the occasion arise.

QFT.

also the martials arts selection in the middle of iowa is a bit lacking. tae kwon do and kung fu are about it. plus i'm broke and can't afford lessons atm anyway.

There are martial arts and there are fighting sports, and there is swaggering about trying to be macho.

A martial art is a lifetime's study.

We get at least one serial martial artist per beginner's course at our fencing club. They always say, "Oh yes, I've done kung fu, karate, aikido, jujitsu, tetsudo, feng shui, Nintendo, satsuma and the ooby dooby, and I thought I'd try fencing for a bit. It's sabre that really appeals to me..."

They then turn out to be the "best" person on the course, simply because they bring some experience of distance, timing and combat awareness with them. Then they are satisfied that they are "naturally talented" at fencing as well as all the other martial arts they've tried. We call them "winner beginners". They move on as soon as the going gets tough, and the hard workers with genuine enthusiasm and commitment start to catch them up.

In any martial art, your toughest opponent is yourself. Anyone can win a fight: just choose the right opponent.

getting in fights just to win them is one of the worst ideas ever, you don't just fight sombody cause you know you will win unless its a videogame or something.

Wing Chun Kung Fu is meant to be the best martial art for street fighting apparently it is like the street fighting version of tai chi

I did boxing for a while, had one fight, won it by stopping him 2nd round winning a fight in front of a crowd is a great feeling probably one of the best things to win lol

And the right cause.

Mikefule
2006-04-01, 11:28 PM
And the right cause.

That's a separate matter.

I meant, anyone can win a fight: just choose the right (i.e. a weaker) opponent. There is no glory in winning a bout (or indeed any other contest) because all it means is that your opponent was weaker than you at that time. (Weaker in the widest sense, not just physical strength.) Whether your sport is boxing, kung fu or fencing, there will always be someone out there who can beat you.

Therefore, your toughest opponent is yourself, because it takes discipline and application to work at improving yourself, not just picking the easy fights, not getting downhearted by the defeats by much stronger opponents, and always remembering that the challenge for most of us is to become as good as you can be, not to become the best.

Which is why I feel that the dilettantes who move from "art" to "art" like gannets at a buffet are missing the point.

woah, thats not what i meant when i said i was considering two other forms of combat, I am going to stick with boxing, i just think that since tai kwon do is right after boxing i could get double the work out in a day. i'm not taking all of them so i can say that i know them all and be an idiot like that.. i'm sticking to boxing.

In this case it is even more so because John is a longstanding member of this community.

of course the best way of fighting is something that has never been named yet. 2 unicyclists having a fight while staying on their unicycles.

i hate fighting, and I always run away because I think fighting is stupid and it is for losers.

but sometimes I wonder what would happen if i was unicycling up the street, and i collided with another unicyclist, and we had a real all out fight.
or say if i was friends with another unicyclist, and this unicyclist met my girlfriend, and he made a pass at her. or if my girlfri9end started seeing another guy who just happened to be a unicyclist, and we got into a fight over her.

i thought about this because once i saw two guys from the football team get into a fight over this girl, and here they were, 2 football players beating the crap out of each other. what if they were unicyclists instead of football players?

i think i would challange the other guy to a unicycle duel, which asks a new question. what is a unicycle duel?

how would 2 unicyclists have a fight? And this is with the understanding that their unicycles had to be part of the fight.

what would the rules be?

Mike_Foote

pistols at dawn, like ten pedals and 180 degree turn and fire. classic duel adapted to unicycle form. or perhaps some rapiers?

Actually, if you want to bring more spectators to NAUCC, maybe sexy Harper and anyone else could do a WWF style rant for the local news, and then go at it with those long foam jousting bats we actually use at NAUCC.
