Hy guys,

Thanks for the birthday wishes. I'm writing from an internet cafe in Kehei, Maui, Hawaii. We're here several days after we were supposed to go home, because my dad crashed his bike (bicycle) on the Haleakala downhill. This is where you go with a guided group and coast a bike from the 10,000' summit of the volcano down to the beach in about 36 miles with almost no pedaling.

But my dad went wide on a turn (we're still not sure why) and rode off the road, going over a bunch of rocks and ending up in a bunch of national park bushes, in which he drilled a hole to his landing place. He is currently in the ICU at the one and only hospital here on Maui, and hopefully will be moved to a regular room in a couple of days. He's already been in there over a week, as this accident happened last Thursday.

Anyway, he broke five of his ribs into little pieces on his right side, causing some liver and lung damage. The major problem is his lungs, which have a hard time working due to the lack of rib structure and pain of broken ribs. It was touch and go for a few days, but hopefully he's now on a slow road to recovery. I may be here for another month until he's well enough to go on an airplane, at which time I will probably accompany him home to Michigan. Jacquie is here with us but will be going home on Sunday, and my dad's wife Nancy is also here.

He also has a hairline fracture on his T6 vertabrae, non-threatening, and various bumps and bruises including what was initially a big one on his head. His helmet probably saved his life and let's not have an argument about that.

If you like, please offer some good thoughts for my dad here, and eventully he'll be in a place where we can show them to him. You can also contact me on my Sidekick mobile device: johnfoss - at - tmail - dot - com.

Danny Myer of Unicyclehawaii.com came out from Oahu to ride with me yesterday. He's an amazingly cool guy. Please introduce yourselves to him at Moab. He'll probably be taking my place there as this trip will go on too long for me to do that one. I'll tell more about how great a guy Danny is later. You may have met him at Moab last year, or MUni Weekend in Santa Barbara.

Anyway, back to updating the rental car and going back to the hospital for another visit. Writing here on this terminal and thinking about all of you unicyclist community people felt real good. I'll probably get my laptop shipped out here next week so I may be back online (a little bit) relatively soon. No internet where we're staying though.

Take care everyone!

Hail to the chief! (http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showpost.php?p=457810&postcount=2) Hope your dad pulls out of it OK. I thought you were more responsible than that.

Boy, this thread is getting older. The thread, yes, but I feel the same! 47. Still younger than Nathan Hoover, Terry Petersen, Bruce Bundy, Steve Colligan, George Peck and a whole bunch of other unicyclists who are paving the way for me... :)

BTW my dad finally made it out of the hospital after about a month, and home where he continued to recover. If anyone could ever get him to exercise he'd be in great shape, but apparently that's just not his thing. :)

Thanks for remembering me Danni, and all you others out there! Tonight I get to go watch the Sacramento Kings (NBA last-place team) from the front row with my trusty camera. I hope to get some more shots like these:

Jacquie bids on that pair of tickets each year at a charity event for our local Rotary Club. Tonight it's vs. the Indiana Pacers. Do you think the Kings will win? My Magic 8 Ball gives them a 50% chance, which is way better than they've been doing!

Happy Birthday! !yadhtriB yppaH

(When I saw this thread, I was kind of taken back because yesterday, not knowing when John Foss's birthday was, I was thinking of posting a thread telling everybody to PM John Foss on his birthday. Of course I didn't, but I had no clue that his birthday was today.)

Have a good time at the BB game!

Thanks everyone for all the Happy Birthday wishes! I had completely forgotten about this thread from 2006 and it was nice of critter to resurrect it. I don't usually post in the Happy Birthday threads because if I post in one, then I feel I'm obligated to post in all of them...

Kings game was great (photo below). They lost, but we were expecting that. It's always fun to be right next to the action. Except when the referees stand right in front of you, which they seem to do an awful lot from those particular seats.... Also, you don't get the kind of attention like what I got (picture) in the "ordinary" seats! Jacquie was responsible for that one. The cool thing was, she just asked, and they did it! Normally you have to pay for those types of things...

I also got a big balloon bouquet, which I wasn't expecting because Jacquie was out of town until we picked her up at the airport just before the game. All in all a pretty nice birthday. :)
