I generally think of Canadians as Americans with better access to healthcare, without nuclear weapons, and owning an extra parka each.
One Canadian in particular, Frederick Banting, is a hero of mine. Someday I plan on leaving flowers at his grave.

well the most notorious difference between australian and canadian is that there is an exchange between "bl**dy" and "f****n".....

Similar to Australians in a lot of ways.
Really? I always viewed Aussies as similar to Brits: two countries that are united by a really great and similar sense of humour. Modern alternative humour ( alternative to humour?) excepted.
The Canadians seem quiet, unobtrusive and very rarely seem to get mentioned at all by the rest of the world. I met one once.
Unless people go looking many find it hard to get past the "cut down trees" stereotype.

The human race is a species so incredibly intelligent that it has invented
Gods to explain anything it does not understand.....although my friend Dave
said no amount of Gods will ever explain how a bra can be removed without
disturbing the T-shirt. I told him the process is called a Moebius strip.

Things that spring to mind:
South park movie (Blame Canada being a very well written and hugely satirical look at passing the buck)
The fact that they still look to the Queen for ruling (as do Australia).
And strangely The Lumberjack Song. Maybe cos it mentions British Columbia.
It's probably 2nd in my list of places I'd move to if I had to move abroad (New Zealand being top, usually)

I hear plenty of Canadian accent with my wife being from northern Michigan and my Canadian grandparents. My wife mostly hides her accent, but she still says "bag" so that it is closer sounding to "beg" than I'm used to. Has anyone else noticed that, or is it just my wife?

I was born in Montreal and benefit from the double nationality (french/canadian) but since my parents were born in France (they got nationalised when living in canada) and came back to France when I was 4 years old, I don't consider me as a Canadian...
To answer the thread question I consider canadians like people whose major goal is "good/healthy way of life". But as I didn't have the opportunity to go back to this beautiful country, this is only supposition.

Do tell. Where in da U.P.?
She grew up in L'Anse and attended NMU where she completed her undergrad degree. Her maiden name is Rencontre in case you know any of her immediate family, most of which is still scattered around the U.P. After we were married, we lived in Marquette for 8-9 months in 1998. I, having lived only in Phoenix, AZ up until then, was grateful that we arrived after the snow and left before anything really stuck to the ground. :)
Also, some of her extended family lives pretty close to where you are (Rochelle, IL), I think. If I remember correctly, Foster is their family name.

Mary graduated from NMU in 1983. I love L'Anse and that whole Keweenaw area. The drive around the tip of the lake is extremely beautiful, a trip we've taken many times. I'll ask Mary if she knows the Rencontre name.
Your extended family lives close to Rochelle? Where's that?

I once offended someone from New Zealand by suggesting he was from Australia. He said that's like saying a Canadian is from the USA. Australia, USA, Britain all jump into war easily, while Canada and NZ are more peaceful.Yeah, sadly there's a lot of truth in that. I think we should all follow Switzerland's example. :)
It's a dangerous assumption though that the Australian government accurately represents Australian culture and the Australian way of life, particularly that of my generation. I too saw a lot of the similarities between Australians and Canadians (note: not 'Australia' and 'Canada') after watching Bowling for Columbine. We don't close/lock doors and windows either. ;)

Edit - As for the Australia/NZ thing, I think that generally speaking New Zealanders are nicer people with a nicer way of life than Australians. I wouldn't mind living in NZ at all.

ok she doesn't have it as bad as some other Nova Scotians I know, of course she is from Halifax that does make a difference. there's a hint of it there though.
The microphone situation at my computer is nonexistent at the moment so i can't add mine right now but maybe sometime.
my French teacher in high school was from small town middle-of-nowhere nova scotia but covered her accent up pretty well, but when she got tired sometimes she'd slip back into it, and she had it THICK. I've got a buddy from PEI... when he comes out west you can't mistake it. It's not overly thick, but it's absolutely the definition of a Canadian accent.

I just like the way Canadians apologise about everything. If someone bumps into you, it's "Oh, sorry!"
Here in France they make it an art to cut people off while driving or walking down the sidewalk. In France, EVERYBODY has the right-of-way. In Canada, EVERYBODY ELSE does.
