check ebay for a cheaper one. and weather or not it is a good starter is questionable...
pro: it is very strong and will last you quite a while
con: the thick tyre is a little harder to learn on
pro: it looks really nice
con: looks arent everything...
see what i mean. dont worry , someone with more info will come along shortly.

buy one from udc.
mine snapped at the crown welds on the frame... so now i have a torker wheel set (heavy) with a nimbus frame (shiney, chrome and not as heavy as the torker frame (at least 300g lighter))
its still a good uni for its price so by all means, go for it

I believe that there are some glaring spelling/punctuation errors within your post, Doofus. Obviously you should have said that you are a "unicyclist" as opposed to a "unicycler," and you missed some apostrophes right after that. In addition to this, you have spelled "beginner" wrong in your public profile. Once you have remedied these errors, simply reach into those deep pockets of yours and shell out for a KH 24", like Kyle. Or at least a new DX. You gotta' throw down to get the goods, if you know what I mean. Eh?

Tyler, is this what you and Kyle do all day? But thanks for pointing that out...I guess. Also- what deep pockets? Unlike Kyle, I don't, and never have had a job, so I'm a little short on money.

Hey, don't bring me into this! But seriously, get the '06 DX. It'll suit your needs and leave room for your to grow into it. It's better to buy a better unicycle that you'll appreciate for a while than to get one that you're going to get sick of quickly. The DX is one of the better cheaper Munis, and the splined hub is definitely a bonus that I think you definitely need if you want to take unicycling to the muni level. Also, the DX allows for upgrades from the Kenda to the Duro 3" tire, which is nice for muni. Although the Nokian Gazzaloddi wont fit the frame, you really dont need it. Arguably the Duro is better for some things than the Gazz.

Ok, so I have a few questions about the DX. Rather than starting a new thread I will post it here...
A little background:
I am new to unicycling, I started in December. I currently have a 24" Torker LX and have taken to light duty MUni. I know that the LX will not hold up for too long especially if I start hopping and riding drops.
I have ordered a '06, 24" DX for my off road adventures, which should be here on Tuesday.
Questions:
My first question is: I weigh about 225lbs how are the '06 DX's holding up to a heavier rider such as myself?
(I have read some of the horror stories about these... bearings, welds, etc. )
What initial maintenance should I do to help not break things as quickly?
Anything else I should know about this uni?
Thanks in advance for your input
Jason

It will hold up well. There is absolutly nothing wrong with teh bearings, and the only weld that isn't very strong is the frame/seat post tube weld.
I do very heavy muni on it, hae done a few 5-6 foot drops, stuff like that, but I only weigh 130lbs. It all depends on your dropping technique, how you land. But if your just starting to hop and do drops, it's fine for sure, I think you should only worry if you get up past maybe 4+ feet high or so....then you need to have a good rollout on your drop.

i have also heard about stuff breaking off on torkers, but i've had mine for about 8 months now, and the only thing i've damaged are the plastic pedals...then the metal pedals, then the other metal pedals, now i have some easterns, and they hold up fine. i really like the wheel set it has too, it's very very sturdy and takes lots of abuse. needless to say, i'm very happy with mine.

Ive had mine for awhile now, and the only problem is it creaks a lot! but only because the reflectors were loose, and now its cause the spokes are losse, other than that its fine, nd if gone upp 3-5 foot drops =p

Can anyone tell me what the difference between the hub/axle/wheel assembly is between the torker LX and DX ?
From what I've seen, the frames look practically identical except for the seat design.. but the wheels look almost the same the DX looks like it has cottered cranks, and the LX has cotterless cranks..
I am wondering if its just a better idea to order an LX and then seperately order the DX seat .. I can save like $ 80 that way.. ?
(yes I am cheep, that is why I bought a gravity and am sick of it within 4 weeks and now I have to buy a better uni)..
any help ?
unijesse
2006-04-12, 06:03 PM
you cant find any cottered cranks on a new cycle nowadays. the dx has a splined hub, which is super strong, wont bend break or twist. the lx is cotterless though and its like a third as good as the dx. if you plan on doing freestyle get the lx or something else, if your doing street/trials get the dx

It will hold up fine, there is nothing wrong with the bearings, the two people who had trouble just overtighened the holders. As far as the welds, only one person that I know of has broken the frame, and they were beating on it pretty bad. I've been riding mine since december and i've given it a nice beating and everything is working fine. I only weight 160 but im sure you wont have any trouble with it. I havnt done any work to it except make sure the spokes and everything else is tight.

Its been a while and ive been thrashing my dx with lots of trails and street, did some 5 foot drops too, without having that great of a rool-out (still gotta get them smooth) and everything is perfect still, almost, one tiny peice of my pedal has broke off when doing a pedal grab, but its still ridable, you dont even notice, the only creaking i get is some bearing issues with the pedals after going off a big drop, but the original welgos are holding up great, the spokes come loose every now and then but that takes about 5mins to fix, cranks are worn down, paint-wise, the top of the crown is worn of, paint-wise =p from all the one-footed stuff i do, tire is getting a little bald, but bearly, everything is great, this uni has well payed for itself at least 10 times, except when i fell off a wall, and couldnt get one foot off the pedal, so the seat kinda jabbed me where it counts, most pain i had for about 30secs, then i just got on and kept riding.
I love this uni! but i still want a KH trials =p

I honestly dont think it is bad, unless when your jumping you have weight on your seat, then its gonna brake, but when im jumping, im standing up, and so most of all the forces goes into the cranks and hub, and with a my roolouts, thats not even bad, proper technique makes everything good =p

I got the LX yesterday, I put it together and it was awesome !
I had to cut the seat post by 1 inch to make it fit me just right =)
The difference between this and the 24" is incredible...
The 20" is much easier to maneuver, turns are easier and quicker, its much lighter (+ I installed my alloy wellgo pedals on it instead of the stock plastic pedals that it came with in the box)... The grab handle on the seat is like a miracle !! =)
I love it !!! (Lets hope it stays together once I start getting better and doing more aggressive tricks on it)...

If im not mistaken you could buy the DX and a nimbus 2 frame and still spend less than a quax, or atleast close.

hmmmm... i have NEVER landed or steped on my frame. so the crappy frame was crappy... and i never hop while sitting on the seat(im a boy)
so it was purely the crappy frame. plus the cranks and hib are very strong. i have great technique while landing but still a 6 foot drop would put alot of stress on anything...

I never said you did that, but that is one of the main reasons for it breaking =p
And have you ever tried to let the seat go in fornt as you land and roll out? you probably have, but its great =p it pretty much makes it so your landing on a bc wheel, cause the frame and seat arnt doing much of anything, then with a rollout your perfect =p

i got a DX (2005) for $200 www.bicyclesource.us
its pretty good so far, but i have one complaint... its too heavy
and its hard to make the wheel exactly perfect in the center of the frame :/ took me 3 days of messing w/ it off and on ... and one of my bearing caps is messed up so it wore a groove in the axle
oh well
warranty is good :)
