Wow, I've just got the CD player in my car replaced under warranty. It took them a month to sort out. It would play the CD that was in it, but it wouldn't eject it. You can only listen to The Fiddle Puppet Dancers so many times, as I'm sure you'll agree.

Not quite "what I'm listening to right now" but I listened to Little Johnny England on the way home. English folk rock with quite a traditional flavour to it, with excellent vocals, and great instrumental accompaniment.

Jerry Garcia Band: After Midnight
Finally...and perhaps amazingly...we overlap. Which version?

I was listening to the "Don't Let Go" CD, recorded at the Orpheum Theatre, May 21, 1976. It pleases me to think about what I was doing on that day, and more importantly, 44 days later.

The "Tall Ships" carried more than just the pride of the world.

The live version recorded at Kean College 2/28/1980.

I don't want to think about what I was doing that day. It was 8th grade. Probably bad memories or me wasting a lunch period loading a BASIC program from cassette tape on a PET computer. If I was lucky there was maybe a Blondie tune on the radio at the time.

Very nice choice there JC...a classic of jazz. I just love St. Thomas. A lot of people don't know that Sonny named the piece after me.

Right now I'm listening to "Shades of Grey", a Robert Earl Keene tune expertly executed by Cry, Cry, Cry. The more I listen to Richard Shindell, the more I listen to Richard Shindell.

"Right or wrong, black or white...cross the line you're gonna pay. In the dawn before the light, live or die by shades of grey."

I saw him in South Africa when he toured here last year.
Hoping he still rocks, and drops the Top 40 once in a while to go into his back catalog.

As a Syracuse boy, this of course puts me in a New York state of mind. Time for a little "Summer, Highland Falls" from the Turnstiles album. Some damn good lines in that song:

"They say that these are not the best of times, but they're the only times I've ever known. And I believe there is a time for meditation in cathedrals of our own."

"We are always what our situations hand us; it's either sadness or euphoria."

I don't follow Billy much these days, but in my late teens he pretty much nailed my worldview with the above. Those were simpler times.

I don't know his stuff well at all, and there was a lot of stuff I didn't know.
It was pretty impressive music tho.
I thoroughly enjoyed the show, with the one regret, he didn't play Goodnight Saigon, but that's a minor detail.
He did finish with Piano Man, so the Top40 sensibilities are still there.

QUOTE]

Update - I only got the album today. I've already listened to it twice. Acoustic guitar, upright bass, fiddles, flute (?) and a variety of other guest instruments. There are splashes of "old time" American, folk, blues, jazz and country in there, and sensitive singing by Devon herself. Lovely and recommended if you have an open mind to acoustic music with any of these influences.

"As Good as it Gets", Anti Nowhere League, from their new album The Road to Rampton.

Anti Nowhere League is one of the early punk bands that has survived and improved, but stayed true to the spirit of rebellion, anarchy and gratuitous offensiveness. Rampton is a mental hospital not far from where I live.

I just tried to listen to Mr. Beast by Mogwai
They really overdid themselves with the clipping distortion and nuisance noise. Not a good album. Mogwai's older stuff is more listenable, but still a bit harsh. Mr. Beast takes that harsh sound to a new level.

Excellent Finnish Folk Metal.

I've just done my weekly shop, with my MP3 on random shuffle. I listened to:

Johnny Collins singing English folk song unaccompanied.
Angelic Upstarts: Last Night Another Soldier (angry late 1970s punk).
Bob Marley & The Wailers: classic reggae
Mary MacNamara: solo Anglo concertina Irish traditional music
Buddy Guy: a great bluesman

Do you like the Nickelback album All the Right Reasons? Or do you like them at all, rather?
I haven't listened to that album, or any Nickelback album. I'll reserve judgment till I get a chance to hear an entire album rather than just radio play.

I should add that my comment about Blue October being just barely tolerable was just about the sound quality and the level of audio dynamics compression. The music itself is good.

"Big-eyed Beans from Venus" ( don't let anything come in between us.)

Captain Beefheart.

And if you have not listened, a lot, to "Trout Mask Replica", you have missed music for the 2010's, recorded in, I think, 1969. ("Big-eyed Beans came from a later album.)

Someone asked the Captain why it took the Magic Band four days to record the 28 composition double "Trout Mask" album. Don van Vliet, the Captain, said "I had to learn how to play the piano."

The opening guitar slide glissando on "Big-eyed" by guitarist "Winged Eel Fingerling" is distilled California, edge-of-the-earth, anything goes, pure as the driven snow artistry.

I also have been listening to "We've Only Just Begun," by the Carpenters.

"King Grand" and after that "This Could Be The Worst", both by Sea Level.

Their music has gone largely out of print, but there is a greatest hits on CD. It's important to remember how good a band this offshoot from the Allman Brothers really was. They had a great groove...

On a related note, Sea Level founder and keyboardest Chuck Leavell put out a very nice CD in 2001 of solo piano instrumentals. Just picked that one up, and it is tasty throughout. Tasty is how I would describe his playing in general, and his solos on the Eric Clapton "Unplugged" album may be the single best audio illustration of what I mean.

Right now, Lucy Mae Blues, by Buddy Guy on his acoustic album, "Blues Singer". It's proper blues, like Muddy Waters would have sounded with modern recording standards.

But earlier today, a new album bought on a whim: the artist is Cazmechanic, and the album is called, "The Secret Life of the Wife of the Captain of the Ship in a Bottle on the Mantle Piece". I just had to buy it for the daft title.

The Secret Life (etc.) is the opening track of an acoustic album of songs, guitar and weird sounds (I think there's a kazoo in there somewhere!) which I think would loosely be categorised as "Indie". Pleasant.

Google searches since I have got home have revealed almost nothing about Cazmechanic.

I just can't get enough of Muhammed Suicmez's guitar mastery, it's much like Yngwie Malmsteen and many classical music influences as well but in a death metal format. I love his solos, they're sort of seperate from the song because they are just so beautiful. Each one leaves you with a feeling, just like a bit of classical music. If you can get past the harsh vocals, the music is just amazing.

Just bought an Aretha Franklin album. She's really rather good.
The Queen of Soul is beyond good. She was well beyond good at Age 18 (http://www.amazon.com/Great-Aretha-Franklin-First-Sides/dp/B0000024ZY/ref=sr_1_48?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1208680655&sr=1-48). Exhibit A: All Night Long. And that was just the start of her body of work. There's a lot to mine, but this one (http://www.amazon.com/Amazing-Grace-Aretha-Franklin/dp/B000002I3Y/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1208680995&sr=1-12) is an okay place to start.

But right now, I'm listening to "Amelia" by Joni Mitchell from the Shadows and Light album. Great solo electric guitar for the first half, then joined by Pat Metheny for the second half duet.
