It's the old release and on a vinyl album so I don't get the extra track with the live version of Round Midnight.
I have the CD, so can hook you up on that one. Also have the follow-up CD, "The Other Side of Round Midnight", with two versions of RM on it.

Back to topic: right now, I'm listening to Texas Blues, Lucy Kaplansky from "The Tide"

I had no idea what I was getting. I recognized some of the performers and figured it ought to be worth getting. For $0.99 I can take a chance and the adventure of picking out something unknown is fun. I know very little about what to get when it comes to jazz. I liked it, especially the first track.

I have side 2 of Robin Trower, Twice Removed from Yesterday spinning right now. Roy Buchanan, Loading Zone is on deck.

The record store was Jive Time in Fremont. Quite a nice selection of vinyl records even in the bargain bins. The also have a small used CD and new CD selection. But the large selection is vinyl.

And while I was in Fremont I discovered Stickman Coffee (http://www.yelp.com/biz/stickman-coffee-seattle). It opened about a month ago and is in a alley just to the right of Deluxe Junk (that triangle block near the Lenin statue). It is in the running for best espresso in Seattle.

Dang...just missed it. I was in Fremont today, and Ballard, showing the sights to a Utah friend in town. The troll is still squeezing his VW. Enjoyed some Nutella gelato--doused in espresso of course--at Lenin's favorite gelato stand. But missed seeing Stickman.

I'll have to check out that record store next time I'm down there. I now have a setup to record my record collection to CD.

But it's bedtime: time for Lucy Kaplansky singing Goodnight.

up next (not kidding about song title, look it up!)

Song- Papyrus Containing The Spell To Preserve its Possessor Against Attacks From He Who Is In The Water (whew!)
Band- Nile
Album- Ithyphallic

Long song title award goes to me! Take that!
Probably not.

"Several species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a Pict" by Pink Floyd

The Guinness World Book of Records, acknowledged the world champion song title holder to be "I'm a Cranky Old Yank, in a Clanky Old Tank, on the Streets of Yokahama with My Honolulu Mama, Doing Those Beat-o, Beat-o, Flat on My Seat-o, Hirohito Blues." According to lyricist Hoagy Carmichael, the original title was only "I'm a Cranky Old Yank", but the joke got out of hand after that.

The longest song title consisting of a single word, recognized as valid in the English language, is "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious", from the 1960s movie, "Mary Poppins".

"The Sad But True Story Of Ray Mingus, The Lumberjack Of Bulk Rock City, And His Never Slacking Stribe In Exploiting The So Far Undiscovered Areas Of The Intention To Bodily Intercourse From The Opposite Species Of His Kind, During Intake Of All The Mental Condition That Could Be Derived From Fermentation"
By REDNEX

In 1987 Game Theory released their album, Lolita Nation, of which track #22 was titled:

"All Clockwork and No Bodily Fluids Makes Hal a Dull Metal Humbert In Heaven Every Elephant Baby Wants to Be So Full of Sting Paul Simon in the Park with Canticle – But You Can't Pick Your Friends Vacuum Genesis DEFMACROS HOWSOMETH INGDOTIME SALENGTHS OMETHINGL ETBFOLLOW AAFTERNOO NGETPRESE NTMOMENTI FTHINGSWO NTALWAYSB ETHISWAYT BCACAUSEA BWASTEAFT ERNOONWHE NEQBMERET URNFROMSH OWLITTLEG REENPLACE 27"

But there are large bits of gibberish in there, so I guess it's still Rednex.
They took over from Shawn Phillips' "She was waiting for her mother at the station in Torino and you know I love you baby but it's getting to heavy to laugh".

A band called "Cornershop" does a real good version of it. You might like them... Cornershop's myspace (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=88094883)

Dang...just missed it.
No surprise. Stickman is hidden away off the main sidewalk and down an alley inside the large entry area for a suite of boutiques. It's a good thing that I have a sixth sense for finding espresso. It's honestly one of the best espressos I have had in Seattle.

I have Mirrors by Blue Öyster Cult playing right now. Another $0.99 album. Not one of BÖC's most rocking albums but still a good listen and I like the song "In Thee".

I wondered who might suggest that. But
I think they are actually working with some sort of low pressure system.

Hey Jupiter, by Tori Amos, from the "Boys for Pele" album.

This is another album I bought on the basis of what was written in a Sunday supplement. I've only bothered to listen to it once before, and that was months ago.

A nice sound, if rather "Kate Bush" for my taste. (I was married to a Kate Bush fan for too many years, so I have a slight allergy there.)

Most of lyrics seemed almost completely inpenetrable.

So I did some Googling. The songs make a little more sense now: she has a big emotional investment in the work of these people: http://www.rainn.org/ :(

Mikefule
2008-01-20, 06:35 PM
A thought on this thread: if it for anything other than showing off what we like, it would be nice for more people to say a little bit about the song/artist/album. No pressure; it's just a suggestion.:)

I have been off work ill for a few days, and I took the opportunity to tidy up the catalogue of my CDs. (It was either that or wash the pots and do the ironing.) I reckon I have 238 CD albums, and the spread of styles and genres is always growing - but I reckon more than half seldom if ever get played. I tend to buy "on spec" and it would be better to have an idea what to expect.

I went to see The Machine (http://www.themachinelive.com/) (a Pink Floyd cover band) last night in Atlanta. A Floyd band is always a good show. Small venue, good music. The band did some jamming on a theme by Floyd during many of the songs. Band jams adding their own flavor to a Floyd song.

Right now I'm listening to Echos from Meddle cause they didn't play it during the show.

"Gimme the Car" by Violent Femmes. Wikipedia told me these guys were folk punk and it makes a great deal of sense to me. Worth a listen if you want something a little way off the beaten trail. They're just in the bushes off to the side a bit... like where you'd go if you had to pee really badly.
The Violent Femmes did Blister in the Sun, right?

"Dearest Darling" by Huey 'Piano' Smith.

That's after
Pennies From Heaven (The Skyliners)
Hushabye (The Mystics)
Automobile (The Stick Shifts)

(That's all doo wop from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. )

And after an afternoon listening to the "Super Super Blues Band": a one off recording featuring Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Bo Diddley all in the smae band singing classics like Little Red Rooster, Spoonful, and Goin' Down Slow.

That's blues.

The Youngbloods: "Get Together" (Man that one really takes me back!) Little trivia about this song: This was written in 1963 by Dino Valenti from Quicksilver Messenger Service. He signed away rights to it when he was imprisoned for marijuana possession. The Youngbloods recorded it and gave the composer credit to Chet Powers, a name they made up.

GET TOGETHER Released: 1967
words and music by Chet Powers

Love is but a song we sing
And fear's the way we die.
You can make the mountains ring
Or make the angels cry.
Though the bird is on the wing
And you may not know why.
C'mon people now
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Some will come and some will go
And we shall surely pass.
When the one that left us here
Returns for us at last.
We are but a moment's sunlight
Fading in the grass.
C'mon people now
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try to love one another right now
If you hear the song we sing
You will understand.
You hold the key to love and fear
In your trembling hand.
Just one key unlocks them both
It's there at your command
C'mon people now
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try to love one another right now

Do you know what they did with the royalty money that came in for the track?

And adding to the trivia, Chris Novoselic of Nirvana recites the chorus over the intro of the song Territorial Pissing on Nevermind.
The engineer said 'Say something' and he said that was the first thing that came into his head.
They decided to keep it on the final recording.

"I Got a Woman", played by Jose Feliciano. Great rendition of the Ray Charles classic...high speed, cranking solo nylon guitar, and some wailing harmonica support from I'm not sure.

Jose would have been better off if he had never recorded Felice Navidad...more people would have tuned in to his amazing talent.

Jose trivia: early on, he played support guitar for John McCuen of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band fame. McCuen ultimately fired Jose for overshadowing him as bandleader.

That was inspiring, so I called up "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You" from "The Bootleg Series, Volume 5: Live 1975". This album kicks it, and I strongly recommend. Recorded around the time of his 'Desire" studio album, his clarity and energy and electricity in concert were peaking. There are some really nice solo acoustic tunes, but it's the full band stuff that dominates: Hard Rain's Gonna Fall, The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll, Hurricane, Oh Sister, It Ain't Me Babe.

Cut Across Shorty, The Head Cat.

This is weird: I have a new album by The Head Cat.

The Head Cat is a rockabilly/rock and roll trio comprising:
Lemmy (Motörhead, Hawkwind) on bass and vocals
Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats, Swing Cats, etc.) on drums
Danny B. Harvey (Swing Cats, etc.) on guitar.

The track list includes Fool's Paradise, Tell me How, Well.. All Right, and Take Your Time which are all from the "soppy" end of Buddy Holly's repertoire, as well as More obvious rcokers like Cut Across Shorty (Eddie Cochran) and Matchbox (Carl Perkins).

So here's Lemmy, the oldest meanest rock and f**in' roller of them all, singing Buddy Holly ballads in his smoke, drugs and alcohol blighted gravelly voice, with mainly acoustic accompaniment, and you know what, it works! But it's weird.

Paul Simon's "America", as performed by Yes on their Yesterdays album.

I had this one on vinyl, but hadn't heard it in years. I found it on CD last night at "Half Price Books" in Redmond...mint condition for $5. Their used CD bin is very challenging to look through...nothing is alphabetized, and it seems like half the CDs are upside down, so scanning through is a challenge. Some people give up rather than scouring through all the titles. That may be why Yesterdays is now in my collection rather than someone else's. I also found a Paul Rishell & Annie Raines blues CD, which actually has a friend of mine on it playing sax. It was a good half-hour investment.

Now on to "Dear Father".

Well some of us sometimes have appointments to keep and can't take the time to browse such a disorganized collection. I guess I should keep quiet about the Half Price Books at Crossroads Mall. Last time I was there the used CDs were somewhat alphabetized.

I just got back from a night ride on the fixie. Needed to take the new cycle light for a bike test ride. I was having such a good time I found myself at the UW before I realized I ought to turn around and head home.

No. I've been playing Anglo concertina for just over a year, and what I play is mainly English (or at least British) tradional tunes, especially for the Morris dance. I'm still in the process of relearning the various tunes I know on harmonica and melodeon. It's a bit like copying all your CDs to MP3 - it takes longer than you thought when you bought the new toy!
