"Madman Across the Water"...Elton John & Bruce Hornsby together, from the Bruce Hornsby 4-CD, 1 DVD set "Intersections".

I've been a semi-Bruce-fan for some time, and have seen him a couple times live. He's always put on a "good show". I saw him two weeks ago in a solo concert, and a "good show" was what I was expecting. Instead, he put on a live performance both transcendent and sublime. Of the great solo concerts I've seen over the years...Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass, Michael Hedges, Martin Taylor, Barney Kessel, Jorma Kaukonen, David Bromberg, Leo Kottke, Christopher Parkening, Larry Coryell, John Fahey, this Hornsby concert--amazingly--slotted in between Taylor and Kessel to make the Top 5. He walked out on stage, played nothing but requests start to finish, and owned the room for two hours. If anyone is on his tour route, I strongly recommend... Plus the ticket price includes the Intersections set, which retails for 5/6ths of the total cost. Big time value.

EDIT: They're christian melodic rock - heavy at times, but they can be very sensitive - they've got a full on worship album out called Strong Tower, which is a whole bunch of old hyms re-vamped. Its very good - i recommend them.

Staying with Battery 9, I'm now listening to a song written about a girl I dated briefly (some time after the song was written tho).
It's called 'Cross No More Rivers' and features the marvellous line of lyrics
"I used to agonise about you, now I don't know why
Cause I just couldn't care wether you live or die"

Gentlemen, we've all been there.

Good find.

Do you know the story behind the instrumental 'Buried Alive in the Blues'?
Yeah, it's unfinished. She ODed before being able to record the vocals.
It's playing on the CD right now.

The liner notes just say
Pearl is a testimonial to Janis and her band's mutual admiration and love. Janis' joy in the Full Tilt boys, in the material, in her life, comes through in every song, even in Nick Gravenites "Buried Alive In The Blues," which he wrote for Janis, and which was the only song for which she had not yet recorded a vocal.
I'm sure Wikipedia would have more to say.

I've gone looking for songs that have been mentioned here. Who can resist, except for maybe Tom.

I found Nude & Rude: The Best of Iggy Pop (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:lxjxlfaehcqi) at the CD store yesterday. So right now I'm listening to track 1 - I Wanna Be Your Dog.

I like Iggy Pop songs, but the recording and production on his albums has never been good. As I listen I just keep thinking that the songs could sound so much better.

I'm All Right - Madeleine Peyroux

He made me laugh
He made me cry
He smoked his stogies in bed
But I'm all right
I'm all right
I've been lonely before
I asked the boy for a few kind words
He gave me a novel instead
But I'm all right
I'm all right
I've been lonely before
It's fine, it's OK
It was wrong either way
I just wanted to say
It isn't much fun when you're drinking for one
He got drunk, he fell down
He threw a few of my things around
But I'm all right
I'm all right
I've been lonely before

I'd like to believe that it's easy to leave
But I have to conceive
That wherever you are, you're still driving my car
Sticks and stones break my bones
But tears don't leave any scars
So I'm all alright
I'm all alright
I've been lonely before

Mmm...
I'm all alright
I'm all alright
I'm all alright
Yeah
He played solitaire in bed
Used to blow bubbles in bed
He sang Christmas songs in bed

I did what I said I would not do (http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showpost.php?p=660665&postcount=17). I saw Queen + Paul Rodgers on sale at a used CD shop. I bought it and just listened to it tonight. I'm a sucker for Queen songs.

I love Paul Rodgers in Bad Company and his other ventures, but the whole time I was listening to the Queen CD I was wishing for a lead singer that had more range. Someone who sings a little higher. Paul did a fine job but it never felt like he was singing his songs except for the three Paul Rodgers covers they included. Sigh. The Queen material is just a little out of range for Paul.

Still good but I have an overwhelming urge to listen to original Queen right now, just after I finish listening to Queen & Paul do "I Want It All" again just a little bit louder. Funny though is that "I Want It All" is sung by both Paul and Brian May so it's not just Paul on the leads. Maybe that's why I want to listen to it again.

I've always thought of Paul Rogers as being just too much of a journey-man singer to be able to front Queen.
I haven't listened to any of it, and I think I might stick to that decision.
There is only one current vocalist I would back to pull that off and that is (drag me outside and stone me, I know) Will Young.

I nearly got shot for suggesting Pink to be the only female vocalist to do Joplin.

Save yourself and don't buy the CD or DVD for the music. It's something for those who want to relive the past. If you get a chance to listen (or watch the DVD) for free then it's worth it for the nostalgia.

The Queen + Paul Rodgers web site (http://www.queenpluspaulrodgers.com/) has streaming audio of Tie Your Mother Down and Fat Bottomed Girls. They also have streaming video of Wishing Well and The Show Must Go On. Those will give you enough to know what the CD (and DVD) is going to be like. Paul does better on Wishing Well than the Queen material.

You should laugh, but as I was listening to the Queen + Paul Rodgers I caught myself thinking what it would be like if Tina Turner was singing instead of Paul Rodgers. I don't know if that could possibly work.

I'm listening old school again tonight. Just finished up Deep Purple Machine Head. I'm listening to the last track Space Truckin right now.

Nice...the Piedmont School. I was lucky enough to see Brownie McGhee play a great show late in his career, and also Sonny and Brownie years earlier at a show I unfortunately don't remember.

In an example of almost surreal conceptual discontinuity, I once attended a guitar workshop at a folk festival featuring John Cephas and Tuck Andress. They were both asked to talk about and play their interpretations of the old folk standard "You Are My Sunshine". Piedmont, meet California. Both were great, but Tuck was the dominant guitar lifeform.

To get back to conceptual continuity, I'm diggin' right now on Guitar Man as played by Stanley Jordan. Closer to Tuck than to Piedmont.
