I've been listening to Pink Floyd - The Wall.

I just got the original US Columbia CD release and wanted to compare it to my Mobile Fidelity gold CD version. I've always listened to my Mobile Fidelity version and never bothered to do an A B comparison with other versions.

Now I have two versions. Next I'll have to find the 1997 remaster and the original UK Harvest release for even more comparisons.

I still like my gold MOFI version better. The Columbia version is very dynamic, but has a harsh tone to it. The guitar and vocals have more edge, but get to be grainy. The MOFI version has the highs rolled off a bit or at least made less prominent. That affects the cymbals and the sibilance in the vocals.

The MOFI version layers the sound much more evenly. You can more easily hear what's behind the lead guitar or lead vocals. You can more easily hear more into the music. The Columbia version makes whatever is in the lead very prominent in the mix. It is hard to hear clearly what is going on behind and listen to the music as a whole. So the two versions have a different presentation. The MOFI version is much easier to listen to. The Columbia version can give you ear fatigue. One way to put it is the MOFI lets you hear into the music. The Columbia version lets you hear at the music.

The Columbia version is more dynamic and in your face. If I was playing the CD for something like a laser light show I'd choose the Columbia version. If I was listening at home I would choose the MOFI version.

After all the A B critical listening I put the Columbia CDs on and listened to the entire album all the way through for enjoyment rather than critical listening.

That was my evening.

Tom has steered me to so much good music. I've gotten much based on his recommendations. All good stuff, but I'm going to have to drop a hint that solo mandolin doesn't quite work for me. Edgar Meyer with guitar accompaniment would work better. My favorite Edgar Meyer combo so far is "Skip, Hop & Wobble (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:difpxqthldke)" with Jerry Douglas, Russ Barenberg and Edgar Meyer. It's ear candy that gets my toes tapping. Could do with a little more Edgar Meyer soloing though.

It said I love the soundtracks to those movies, but then I realized I wasn't SURE you were talking about LotR. When I looked at my playlist, I realized that the Return of the King music was the London Oratory School Scholars, not the London Symphony Orchestra, and the other two are attributed just to Howard Shore.
