Make helpful, well thought out, and informative posts in the main Rec.Sport.Unicycling forum here. I primarily give out positive reputation for good posts in R.S.U. since R.S.U. is the main forum, and the unicycling focused forum, for this site. Posts in Just Conversation are just fluff and it would take something extra special for me to give positive reputation for a post in Just Conversation.
But just give it time. It will take more than just a week for people to notice that you are a new and positive and helpful member.
And don't get hung up on the reputation. It isn't a measure of your worth. It's more a measure of long term and familiar members who make worthwhile posts. As a new member it will take a bit for people to notice if your posts are of the exceptional variety. Well written and fun to read posts like Mikefule's will get you positive reputation (not that I make any of those style of posts, I only wish I could write like that).

Have a look at this thread - http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43967
It was created just after the site was updated (recently) so it covers all the questions you're likely to have.
Try not to worry about rep too much though, I think you'll find most people will read your posts regardless of your rep and make their own judgements.

Edit - John beat me to it. :)

How kind.:) Would that it were true - I have fallen right down in the rankings of late. I have had to fall back on releasing a "greatest hits" album in a desperate bid to revive a flagging career. If that doesn't work, I might even have to die on the toilet.

also, i give good rep if youre a good unicyclist. not the only time i give rep, but like if someone makes a good movie i will. so one way is to make a movie and people will respect and recognize you. dig that.

You're lucky I'm in a good mood. Your greatest hits PDF makes comical use of Comic Sans (http://bancomicsans.com/). If I wasn't in such a good mood I'd have to dock your reputation for that font abuse. :p

Wow! I had never realised the importance of the issue. I am truly humbled.

It's Comic Sans. It can't be serious or important. :p
