Definitely not good quality job, but I had to PhotoShop our bass player back into a band photo that he couldn't make it for. :)

Well thanks, but it's far from awesome. He's too crisp. I tried to smooth him out a bit (yes it was the guy above the sign) but that just didn't work. Turning it to sepia really helped though, the colour differences stood out a bit too until I did that.

I'm really enjoying getting into PhotoShop though, I started using it about a month ago for uni...it's so quick to use. We've used it for all our band's EP cover design and posters, etc, etc.

Oh, I've got so many random photoshops... I'm doing it for Graphic Arts class, actually, so most of them are all restricted because of criteria for projects.

oh well.

You could try a little gaussian blur (filters menu) on him next time. And maybe he's a tad large for the scale of the others? (Transform, Scale).

The other thing that makes him slightly not match is the lighting on him, which is a little more powerful than the rest of the photo. That would be more work to adjust...

I just took a Photoshop seminar yesterday. It was great! The commute to and From San Fran was NOT.

I actually tried gaussian blur but I think I'm still a bit too inexperienced to make it work well. Good call on the scale...it's one of those things where once you've been working on a picture for a while it can be difficult to step back a take a 'fresh' look at it. I tried to play around with the lighting and make it a little less definite, but I couldn't manage it without effecting what was going on with the rest of his image. I still have the originals so I may well make these changes. Thanks.

Paint.NET (http://www.eecs.wsu.edu/paint.net/) is a free software project that gives you a lot of the basic image editing features. Did I mention that it's free and legal?

It works very well. The interface is easy to figure out. It's in active development and getting more features with each version.

Think of it as a Photoshop Lite that's free and easy to use.

I was looking for something which allows you to do vector art. I think you can in adobe photoshop, but does paint.net let you? I currently have paint shop pro (5), but it doesn't have all the abilities that I'd like to have.

I'm kinda picky like that.

john_childs

Paint.NET only does bitmap editing. It doesn't do any vector art at all.

Photoshop is also a bitmap editor. I think the newest version of Photoshop is able to import Illustrator vector images and do things like scale them and rotate them as vectors instead of bitmaps, but Photoshop is still a bitmap editing program. It's not going to let you create vector art. That's why Adobe makes Illustrator.

You could also consider Photoshop Elements, which is about $99 and does at least 90% of what most peoople will ever need.

The full Photoshop product does have some vector capabilities, such as the smart image importing, and ability to draw simple vector shapes and turn text into vector paths. But it's very basic and not anything like Illustrator or similar.

thats why you right click the file and then go to advanced and then "look up file with bitsi.com" or something like that.

This wasn't photoshopped, it was Gimped ;) The GIMP is like Photoshop, but open source, multi-platform (Windows, Mac, & Linux), and free. And for those whiners who say it's not like Photoshop (I dunno, 'cause I never used photoshop enough to remember the difference) there's a version called GimpShop with the menus arranged like Photoshop. Oh, and no virii to worry about. This was done in a hotel in Spokane, on a Pentium 133 laptop with 32M of ram, running Caldera Linux back in 2001 or so. Shrunk down from a 1600x1200 image :)

Nice work Matt! I used to use PSP, but then they staretd putting in better copy protection, and then I found The Gimp ;)

Brockfisher, you'd be amazed how well it looks at full size, I actually have it printed from one of those Kodak machines at Walmart and framed, and it's fun to see people do a double take of that :)

UniTyler, the camera is a Canon A20, 2.1 megapix. It does photos of 1600x1200 pixels, and they look awesome. My only complaints are that with the flash people often get devil eyes, and the zoom is only a 3X. See if you can find an A75, those are 3.1MP I think, and take video at 640x480. Of course, the A20 is about 5 years old now, and they don't make the A75 either ;)

Thanks Evil Nick :-)

Andrew, Another method is to put a black layer over the image and set the layer mode to "colourise" or some similar setting (I can't remember, I haven't done it in a while) and use the erase tool to remove the black layer where you want colour showing through

Yeesh! That's great, I can't even start to tell the lines. I do notice a little contrast in megapixels to the left, you might want to take John Foss's advice and do that blending thing. That should help.
