only 8 inches for a snow day??? was there freezing rain before it snowed or somthing? you live in canada man! you should be chill in WAY more snow than me! ... we dont get a snow day unless there is more snow than the snowplows can plow or there is more ice that you find on a frozen lake... they will make it so people arent late for first period if they crash thier cars, but they will rarely call a snowday... i envy you man

suprisingly this was the first real snow fall of the year for us, and plus our school board is full of pansies who are scared of everything, also the first snow fall is always the most slipery (apparently) so, it all works out in my favor ROCK ON!!:D

Around here, school gets called off when we have extreme subzero temperatures and high windchill, since it'd be bad for the kids to be outside waiting for the bus in this weather.

I used to walk in the streets to kindergarten in the U.P. because the sno-go machines would pile 10' of snow on the sidewalks.
When Mary and I lived in D.C., the radios would announce a threat of a snowflake or two and the schools would panic and send everybody home.
Here in the UK it takes nothing more than a light frost before WEATHER CAUSES TRAFFIC CHAOS headlines start appearing everywhere.
More snow please. Snow is fun, and we don't get enough here!

Snow days are fun. *
You can't make it to school but you sure can make it to the sledding hill or drive 65 miles to the ski area.
*Unless you have too many and end up not getting out of school until July.

We hardly have snow days around here, people just drive anyway. We have probally 7-8 inches right now.
But we almost did the other day. THe roads were icy, the wind was blowing snow, and cars were sliding off the road.

A lot of times what happens with the first snow is that the ploughs and stuff just aren't ready for it yet, so it doesn't have to be very big for it to be a problem. We haven't had any collecting snow here yet, a flew flurries but nothing more. I can't wait for it. We had a ton of rain today though, my basement is flooded and its coming down oone of the walls. Our house is like 100 - 140 yrs old, and the foundation is made of stone. The basement is also unfinished, but it still has never come in like that.
TheDave,
When do your hills usually open up? Ours are like mid-late December.

Our hills are opening this weekend, some on thanksgiving. We've had some good snow a little early this year.
Usually they don't open untill after thanksgiving though. (the 24th)
I think the one in Whitefish opens this week too?
Which doesn't help me much, 'cause we aren't going skiing untill JANUARY.

Hah, my school gets cancelled if we get 2-3 inches of snow, or less than an inch of ice.

same up here. last year the only time they gave snow days was when the buses' fuel froze. No foolin'. they cancelled school for a week because of it. up here eight inches is nothing. to actually have a snow day because of snow itself, it's gotta snow at least two feet. at least.

i had hurricane days when rita came. actually it was a full week. i had great plans to "ride out" the hurricane if you know what i mean. i went to my girlfriends house with two unicycles and all the protective gear i own. i was preparing for 150 mph winds, flying mail boxes, falling trees, death and destruction, chaos, panic, oh what wonderful plans i had. then the damn thing turned north and destroyed east texas instead. it barely rained, the wind hardly snapped any trees, and the wind was no worse than a bad storm. i went out riding during the heaviest part of the storm and it didn't even knock me off of the unicycle. i stayed out for a long time hoping it would get worse(or better?), but alas it was not meant to be. i finally accepted the depressing situation and went inside around 3am completely uninjured. at least i got a week off of school though, and i got to see some nice panic on the highways as everybody tried to leave town days before the storm hit.
