I think, for the most part, its completely stupid...cheerleading itself isn't really stupid, but what people have made of it is. the stereotypical cheerleader image, and also the fact that cheerleading is now a competitive sport. I think that is dumb.

I was a cheerleader freshman year... our team sucked, and I was the only person who could do stunts like B-flips and BHS stuff, so it was cruddy.
It can be fun, if you have a good team with no fat chicks.

It's good and bad. Actually I don't really have an opinion on cheerleading, I just wanted to see if I could vote for both Yeah & Naw. Looks like I could. :)

and it has the highest serious injury rate of any HS sport outside of football. higher than any other girls sport. cheerleaders are good, except at most sporting events.

Cheerleading is neither good nor bad. Cheerleaders and their culture are good or bad or somewhere in between.
Be a good person, be a good cheerleader, and enjoy being both.

Personally, I don't see much use for cheerleading but it's an American icon and here to stay. Do they have cheerleading in other countries? For what sports?
In H.S. they were always sort of a clique and, for the most part, were quite devisive in the pursuit of popularity. You were either in or waaaaaay out. Maybe it was just my school. But, as much as I don't see the need for cheerleading, I do agree that cheerleading can be a competitive sport. The girls (or guys) are athletes just as much as gymnists or participants in any other bendable sport. And it takes skill and practice to put a routine together. I throw sycronized swimming into the same boat. I don't care for sycronized swimming but I have to admit that the swimmers are far better athletes than I ever hope to be.
There was one strange thing during last year's wrestling season though. We were at a tournament with eight teams from the Chicago 'burbs. One team brought cheerleaders. When a wrestler from their school took the mat, a squad of girls hustled down to the mat, knelt at the edge and performed cheers throughout the match. I'd never seen that before. It was weird.
Rah, rah, sis boom bah. Gooooooo, Bruce!
Its not tooo bad.
I tought that in HS, mthe cheerleaders would be supper elite-ist, and try to be the most popular. Well, I was surprised to see that mst of our cheerleaders weren't super popular, skinny, rich girls, but most are somewhat popular, "average" girls.
...and for some reason we have no guy cheerleaders

I think cheerleaders are pretty cool, personally. The ones at my school are nice, and they're not sluts or anything (not to say they're not easy on the eyes ;)), and they help keep the crowd pumped at games.

our cheerleaders suck... so i dont think very highly of cheerleaders in general because of this. they think they are super cool and are very clique-ie... the rest of the school is like "wow, you're cool... not" oh well, not sure what it would be like to have cheerleaders that can stay together for cheers and smile... but there is one girl that does flips and stuff, shes nuts

Not really in the UK. I've certainly not seen it at football (association), football (rugby) or cricket.
Cheerleading - good/bad? Nope - Baffling!

:D all the girls on my squad besides me are extremely popular. So far, I am the least popular girl on the team. Of courese im the only one that hangs out with the freaks that I do. And I'm the only one (so far) that rides a unicycle. Not that that makes me a freak.:D :D :D

I'm kinda pissed because our cheerleading person wouldn't let any guys join it, even though they wanted to and were incredibly hardcore with backflips, trickin stuff, etc.
(I'm not really informed about that, but this is what I'm hearing)

I think the stuff cheerleaders do nowadays is cool, but calling it cheerleading is stupid.
its more like gymnastics/acrobatics/dance. if they called it something like that, then it'd be totally cool...but since they call themselves "cheerleaders" its dumb.
in my not so humble opinion.

that is what we call sexism, and if you're school is doing that, they can face severe reprocusions (thank you affirmitive action!).
thats my two sence.

It's odd. I was very popular in high school but I wasn't a cheerleader. I've never been a popular girl, though. I do think there are not enough groups to ostracize. We need more specific classification.
And, in addition, what Raphael wrote. It was his usual dose of wisdom.

It DOES happen in the UK. I know of a local cheerleading group, and it is so popular that it has a waiting list. I have no idea whether they perform at events.
As regards yes or no: it does no harm and the participants and most of the audience seem to enjoy it.

Cheerleading is not that big here yet, but it's becomming more popular. All the major soccer teams have a cheer squad and mascot now. 15 years ago none of them had. Other sports are going that way too, but not as fast because they don't attract as many spectators.

That what cheerleading is... what do you think it is? little girls with pom pom's? :P
James_Potter

I think it implies...one who leads a cheer.
Makes sense to me, anyway...people should go to a football game to watch the football game, not see the gymnastics in between plays.
Just my not so humble opinion ( :
